Mario direct voice just sounded like Mario going through puberty
Plot twist, Mario is from Ork, where people age backwards. He was born an old man, that's why he was bald in that Donkey Kong '81 commercial; but now, over 40 years later, he's _finally_ a teenager.

That’s probably the best take after trying for 2 days straight lol

@@rexrabbiteerI’d say 2 weeks is more realistic
I think his interjections like "wahoo" are fine, but things fall apart when he starts speaking sentences
Yeah... He can improve of course, but I don't believe he could do a good job in a game like the Mario & Luigi series where Charles really stood out.
Hard agree. I think with the Bros. in general, there's 2 modes with their voices.
1. Grunting and other funky sounds.
2. Speaking actual words...but mostly just short 2-3 word phrases.
I feel like since they're more known for their "Wahoo!"s and "Yippee!"s, a lot of people try to get those down instead. It's also just generally much easier to do a voice for a wacky lil' sound compared to actually maintaining it for a phrase.
Obviously that 50/50 gamble doesn't work when you gotta have both.
I feel like the main issue is that Nintendo decided to try and get someone who could perform FOUR CHARACTERS. It's hard enough to voice one sometimes, and while Charles did it wonderfully he also had a very important advantage of being the first, which helpped shaped people's view on them (outside of tv). I think if they had split up the roles for Mario, Luigi, Wario and Waluigi, even a bit maybe two actors playing two of them or something like that it'd allow certain actors to play to more of their strength.
His issue is that his voice isnt built to go as high as hes trying to protray. His voice direction is obviously in the direction of the older voice, but I've noticed that he can only pull it off when ever hes voicing a lone that is very short if he has to say something drawn out is when he starts to sound off. I agree he should probably try and tone down the highness to make it more in his vocal range
Kevin just needs time to really figure out the voice fully.
Probably. If you go back to Charles’s earlier Mario voice acting it’s a lot less polished than it became even just a few years later. Kevin seems like… 80% of the way there.
@@DissociatedWomenIncorporatedYeah he sounds good with most lines, it's just his "here we go", his "it'sa me" and his "oh yeah mario time"

@@legometaworld2728 … WRONG!!!!
You know what I noticed? Is Kevin's Mario Voice similar to what Thomas The Tank Engine's Voice Actor from the TV Show in the CGI one sounds like?? Or is that just me??
Im very curious to hear how his Waluigi voice sounds when the time comes.
What's even more interesting is that in the Nintendo news feed video for Mario Day, they replaced the clip with Kevin with an older voice from Charles
The problem is that when Charles does the voice, it seems like he raises his soft palette (the part in your mouth that raises when you yawn, further in the back passed the rigid bumpy part of the roof of your mouth referred to as the hard palette) where as Kevin’s Mario voice is very forward and in the nose, thus the soft palette is lowered
Yes! And I feel like he gets it right sometimes, but he’s not used to keeping his voice like that and so you can hear the voice shift back towards his nose in alternate takes
Half Mario's voice lines from Kevin sound like a fusion of Mickey Mouse and Mario at times with how high the pitch they sound

It happens every time a new voice actor takes a familiar role. There's some awkwardness at first until the actor gets more accustomed to the role and the audience gets accustomed to that actor's portrayal. I remember hearing Mickey Mouse's voice when Bret Iwan took over and it was so strange to me even though it was very close to Wayne Allwine. Now it sounds totally normal to me.
I don't think this is always the case, Matt Vogel has been performing Kermit the frog since 2017 and people still have issues with his performance, why? Because he does not sound like Kermit, Bret Iwan and even Chris Diamantopoulos on the other hand DO sound like Mickey, they both always have despite each having their own slightly distinct take. That's the thing, the performer needs to sound at least close to the previous portrayals, and unfortunately, I don't think Kevin Afghani really cuts it with Mario, much much less so with Wario, I can see myself getting used to his Luigi though, there is no reason for one person to portray every character Charles Martinet did, they should get multiple VAs, but of course they won't, I mean I suspect money is the reason they retired Charles from the role in the first place so paying multiple salaries as opposed to one would miss the point.
The new Powerpuff Girls, Elmo's new voice, Kermit's new voice, half of the Simpson's' new voices... it's been years since these were introduced and they sound bad, and I do not like them to this day. Getting used to it has nothing to do with the quality of the performance.
@@voiceunderthecovers it doesn't help that every one of those was replaced in a disgraceful manner that gave a huge middle finger to the original performers, either because of baseless accusations, blatant racism, or just... apparently not even considering the originals for the parts.
I personally think Afghani does better when he's not trying to imitate Martinet.
If you're gonna voice video game Mario, you are going to imitate Martinet, no two ways around it.
@@LZMP60 Well, look how that worked out there on the MAR10 day Twitter post. It didn't. He needs more practice behind the scenes before they ask him to do something like that. Mario sounds like micky mouse when jumping and especially when riding the rails and Luigi sounds fine but when he’s grinding the rails he sounds very off
Obviously the voice sounds a little off but we have to be careful to not let "back in my day" syndrome affect us too much. I honestly think we'll be able to get used to Mario's new voice over time once Kevin has voiced him in more and more games.

Charles should have voiced Mario Wonder before he stepped down
that way he went out with a bang
I think when Kevin’s voice gets deeper as he gets older and the longer he voices Mario, his voice will sound more like Charles’. But I agree with this video in that he sounds really good as Wario, as he managed to recapture the gruff and hot tempered energy Wario is most known for that Charles began to lose starting with Get It Together.
Feel like if he slows down his voice would sound better. Try listening at .75 playback speed. Dunno how you peeps will feel about this take.
But the Mario time is pretty bad. No fixing that.
That feels like it shouldn’t work but even as someone who likes the new voice I agree that it does sound better slowed. I think the current voice can feel like a caricature of the old one at times, in the sense that it tries to capture the brightness and energy of Martinet but overdoes it. Afghani is new to the role, of course, so I have total faith he’ll become more familiar with the more subtle details of Mario’s voice over time (and from there perhaps he can create a more refined/consistent voice for the character that is still uniquely his own)
Wow! The audio is soooo crisp you can hear the straining in kevin voice to match a sound.
Its an unfortunate reality that eventually charles will pass away and the voice will have to move to a successor. I think Nintendo wanted to get ahead on it. Get people used to a new voice.
I’ve been thinking of this too
That's so fucking despicable.
Honestly I think Mario's new VA will get better with time. Other than that the characters that Kevin has voiced haven't sounded too different.
Some of those "Wowie-Zowie"s sound more like a Pokemon. LOL. 😆
With all respect, this guy sounds like Mario with no mustache
OMG I THOUGHT THE SAME THING
I do think he’ll get better at the voice over time. You gotta remember, he’s new to the role and people have really high expectations for him. I’m convinced he’ll get better… and I hope this doesn’t turn into a thing where they replace the VA every game
Gamers will complain about anything in kid’s games.
He's not only new to the role, but he's also new to voice acting altogether, which I think is part of the problem.
everyone seems to agree he's best at luigi, I doubt nintendo can find a one size fits all va that can do all of martinet's performances and should aim to either let the characters be reinterpreted on a much larger scale or have them all voiced by different vas who specialize in specific martinet voice impressions
@@xxgothicprincessxx I'm of the belief that the entire reason they retired Martinet is because he was asking for more money after the success of the movie. Getting multiple VAs would defeat the purpose of why they got a new person in the first place, the salary of one rookie VA is a lot smaller than one legendary established VA or multiple VAs
I wondee if he's ever going to do the pseudo-italian gibberish from the Mario & Luigi series.
That was always my favourite little bit that Charles used to do.
I suspect they may have been in a rush to produce the clip for the Mario Day video. A few more takes with someone directing him should easily iron out issues like that.
Exactly, why poop on his performance when they may have just not cared how much effort he was supposed to give to the voice. He's trying his best because he was rushed. Sounded like he was not even given a drink of water beforehand. Come on Nintendo.😓
as someone who does silly voices, especially mario, i can tell that kevin is straining his voice with that line
thats probably why he sounds like hes going though puberty

Charles Martinet will forever be the true Mario. He got the voice spot on and carried it for decades.
fun fact: to me kevin's "oh yeah mario time" sounds more like the one in 3D world
He messed up the r in Mario and the t in Time
The Kevin voice for Wario and Luigi isn’t bad, however he most certainly does need to do better with the Mario voice. It don’t sound like well… Mario if yk what I mean
Charles Martinet is always the GOAT to me when he voiced Mario, Luigi, Wario, and Waluigi, plus other nintendo characters that he voiced. Mario, Luigi, Wario, and Waluigi, and plus other Nintendo Characters are and will not be the same without the GOAT, Charles Martinet!!

It's possible he wanted to quietly step down in old age, but like you said, he's mentioned many times his desire to be Mario until he died. It's all honestly come off to me like they moved him into that vague "Ambassador" role rather than him choosing to part ways by himself.

Funny enough, I actually really like the “it’s a me” quote from Wonder, it sounds different in a good way. But yeah that “Mario Time” one was off in a bad way.
Though I don’t think Mario’s voice should always be an impression but rather something he makes his own or grows into, while his of course still sounding like Mario. Heck, it took Charles a few games to get his voice down, I mean compare the sunshine voice to odyssey, completely different.
They just fired someone for no reason only to replace him with someone who's job is to sound exactly like the guy they fired for no reason *logic 100*
I still don't get why Charles was put into this "ambassador" position. I'm pretty sure he didn't choose it, they just suddenly said "you're not voicing Mario in games anymore"
Not the only position he was put in, because he got F U G G E D
Simple, because he's getting old and Nintendo couldn't simply say that his retiring from the possition, not with their fan base.
You're overthinking this, it's not some conspiracy. Dude was getting older, and voice acting is tough when you're speaking in a range outside your normal tenor, a la Mario to Charles' normal voice. It's easy to believe the dude willingly stepped down from the role as he found it harder and harder to hit the appropriate pitch. The ambassador role was probably created because Nintendo and Charles recognize that Charles is an iconic and frankly important name to fans, so even if he can't contribute in the same way you want to honor that. It's the same as when a team in the NBA signs a player for like 1 day so they can technically retire with whatever team they were the most 'important' to.
It’s a promotion he went from being the voice to the face
Charles Martinet has said before that he never wanted to stop voicing Mario, and never seemed to have fears of not being able to do it with age. And he has yet to come forward and say that that’s the case as far as I’m aware.
Look, it is an absolute HONOR to be able to be the voice behind the biggest mascot in the world. I'm sure Kevin Afghani is ecstatic to voice the roll, and I wish him nothing but the best moving forward. But so many better options were out there, namely Jesse Pinnick, who can capture the little nuances of Martinet's voice PERFECTLY.
I have a feeling Nintendo wanted a new direction for Mario's voice, and mimmicking Martinet wasn't the goal. If that's the case, then Afghani is doing a splendid job.
I just looked him up and HOLY S**T he sounds perfect! Though it also sounds like an AI cover to an extent.
Not bad at all. I can tell it's a new actor trying to do the voice as Martinet did in the past, and occasionally still does.

i think for me the problem is the voice kind of slips off at the end (of the mar10 day ad i mean) like he's doing an impression but struggles to keep it up halfway through. like i have this problem that when i try and do accents if im not trying hard enough it'll just devolve into one of 2 ones im good at, it kind of feels like that to me? i cant explain it well but yeah
it feels like the voice actor is slipping up halfway through and going back to his regular voice
but this is the first time ive heard mario's new voice so idk
SAFE LIGHT REPAIR SAFE LIGHT REPLACE
Charles was so iconic for the 4 plumbers and really set their voices in stone. But putting the same kind of pressure on Kevin, seems a bit unfair.
Maybe the multi-billion corporation that is Nintendo, could afford to hire a voice actor for each character?
Kevin’s Luigi is actually really really good, but I’m not quite convinced on his take on Mario or Wario.
Just because Charles voiced all of them, doesn’t mean Kevin HAS to, if he’s not fit for the roles.
Thank you for crediting my render! Neat video!
hes trying his best
We should at least give him time to be able to nail it, the right way
Good video, Nin one zero do land!
I really like his Wario, and I think people are being too tough on his Mario voice. There is a noticeable vocal break in some of his Mario clips, but that could be from the lack of a proper vocal warm-up. He can do the voice just fine and we know that, it'll just take some time before it becomes second nature and he can just slip into the voice like Charles can (after doing it for literal decades). Charles also invented the voice, so it's perfectly suited for him, whereas Kevin is doing his best portrayal of a voice that wasn't tailor-made for him.
After a while I think it'll improve a lot, people are just too critical of something most of us know nothing about (professional voice acting)
I think I can do a Pretty good impression of mario, walugi, and Wario. Sadly I can't do luigi
I know Mario's got an Italian accent, but I really think the voice direction needs to deviate away enough to stand out on its own in a better way, one that would make it unreasonable to compare to Charles Martinet. I think Wonder did it more than well, but clearly there was an attempt to replicate Martinet here, one that seemingly did the job but failed to capture the essence of Mario.
But he needs to get the Mario accent right
I care more about the pronunciation of the letters than the voice tbh
After he gets it right he can do whatever he wants with it
I think Kevin needs to sit down in a room with Charles and have him run through it. Seriously how Charles not involved with this seems strange as a series ambassador.
This is a challenging time for Mario, his model is changing we need to try to understand him. Those wonder voice clips are amazing, but Charles will always be my favorite ❤
they should have actually gotten an italian person tbh
Who's gonna tell him Wallace Wells is played by a straight guy?
Warios voice is pretty good it might just be me missing Charles tho
My thoughts are that Kevin is doing his best on the monumental task he's been given, and he _will_ get better with experience as he grows comfortable with the role. And I wish Charles a very happy retirement.
Some of those Wario clips from Kevin legitimately sound so perfect, impossible to imagine improvement.
This feels more like a direction issue, I have no idea why Nintendo wouldn’t go with another take for the Mar10 intro because Kevin does a pretty good job as Mario imo
Kevin afgaini needs to just have his own style rather than a bad impression of Charles
As someone that had really strong feelings on Martinet stepping down from the role, I have to admit that judging the new actor's work only by the worst examples was very wrong. Like you said, these are very big shoes to fill, but on the best takes I think his impression is spot on. Thanks for putting this video together!
this very true, sometimes in wonder, he sometimes sounds like the talking flower
Charles probably had 30-40 years when he started voicing Mario.
The problem is not Kevin Afghani.
The problem is Kevin Afghani being too young.
Charles Martinet also did acting and theater work before he became the voice of mario, so he did have experience on his belt
I'll admit at least they actually attempt at having a new VA when they easily could have just pulled an "AI" for much less cost
I'll respect nintendo for that
Respect them for doing the bare minimum, firing a legacy actor because he's old and never give an exact reason? Sure!
i think the differences are very noticeable, but i haven't actually played wonder, and i imagine it's alot less noticable during actual gameplay
i do think he does a very good wario though, i think they should have gotten someone else for mario, and allowed him to do the other characters
we are just seeing earlier into the Mario Timeline. he's going through puberty right now.
He's doing his BEST OK??!
Right… he’s the worst voice actor ever buddy
I kept replaying it and it still doesn't sound good I got sadder the more I heard it 😭🤧
I feel like they should've gotten different voice actors for each of the plumbers, so that the actors can play to their strengths instead of just having one new voice actor filling the role of a seasoned voice actor like Charles. Just like how Rick and Morty both got a new voice actor each instead of finding one guy to do both, and both of their voices are pretty spot-on (Rick's is better than Morty's, but it's still not as noticable). Kevin's amazing as Wario, so he should definitely stay as him. His Luigi is not bad either, but I do think they could find other VAs who could do Mario and Luigi much better, and take the pressure off of Kevin to do so many voices as perfectly as possible.
I kinda wish we could’ve just recycled Charles’ old voice clips for the rest of time. You could have a new voice actor, but it would be best if you only asked them to record new lines for Mario rather than do imperfect versions of existing lines.
That only works if they sound so much the same that you'd not notice a difference in the new lines.
Honestly, I think they need to take the Mickey Mouse approach to the new voice to the character. What I mean is that given the various voice actors he had over the years Mickey stays constant in his tone of voice. Also there is a line they say that…”You’re only filling in for the boss. “. So that should be taken into account for this situation.
Flap jacks lol
Honestly, whilst he certainly sounds a little rough around the edges in places, I'd imagine that much like Ben Whitehead as Wallace or even Troy Baker as the Joker, he'll likely get better as it goes on.
But yeah, I don't envy Kevin in this situation.
I feel like it's mainly it's down to manurisms and tone/pitch where Kevin did land a good amount of the action clips though it as you said did slip through and honestly Kevin did amazing with Wario actively sounding like the original voice given to him. And I think it was the same thing for the newer Wario voice Martinet had done it personally sound closer to waluigi but still had that underlying Wario pacing and manurisms. Honestly I agree it takes time but without being told that he voiced Wario. In move it I had no idea which actively makes me want to see what he can do in his role
That's not my wario 😢
WAAAH!?
Kevin is great, Charles is great, but he deserved another take there lmao
Kevin Afghani's first time officially voicing Mario wasn't Wonder. It was in WarioWare: Move It
I think they could have taken their own take on the direct line rather than trying to mimic.
Maybe a bit more energetic like the lines from Wonder
I see no problem. It sounds like Mario. Not perfect but still sounds like Mario
