and with their tendency to take chunks of territory(to be held later by mines), then perhaps the area east of the river is the real target. There are two rivers here, one closer to Karkhiv, and another one farther east. The area east of the latter river will be a lot easier to take once ukraine is forced to redeploy. And it will be harder to retake given that russia can easily mass produce mines.

Russia ultimate goal is to make Ukraine choose between Odessa and Kyiv. They want Ukriane to commit more men to the Kharkiv frontline and then they will open up another frontline against Kyiv from Belarus’s . Once the Ukrainian are committed they will push for Odessa. Most likely they will drag out Kharkiv because geologically if they are willing to accept high casualties they can take Kharkiv whenever they want because it is on there border. Odessa is the real challenge for them to take and if they take Odessa . Ukriane is landlocked . They can focus on Kyiv later

You don't train pilots on a new combat aircraft in a couple of weeks. The pilots are coming, training is just finishing now on the first batch of pilots. It isn't like Americans can fly them in Ukraine without starting a hot war with the US. Also, planes without pilots are sitting duck targets, so the pilots come first.

Remember several months ago when the Russian AWACS and several other planes were downed, even some Ukrainian sources were speculating the F-16s had arrived. @chrisviking7807 Ukraine doesn't have men to send for that, the troops in this region of Ukraine are reserve forces, national guard and territorial guard units, mostly conscripts. Ukraines elite units are tied up at their defensive lines outside of Avdiivka, Vuhledar and Robotyne; they are already stretched thin. If Ukraine rotates forces away from those areas to the north, Russia has achieved tactical success. If Ukraine doesn't move elite units and Russia keeps taking ground in the north, still a tactical sucess for them. If Russia keeps piling up this sucesses they will eventually get lucky and acheive a strategic success, a breakthrough.

That sounds right. Kharkiv is too big a city to attack directly from the single attack vector the Russian are attacking from. Russia can not use human wave attacks as such attacks won't work because human wave attacks are generally used to breach a narrow point in a defense line then send reinforcement into the breach to disrupt the strategic depths. It would not work for Kharkiv because there would be too many strong points. The only way to capture such a city is to encircle it and weaken it first. To take Kharkiv Russia would need 300-400k soldiers. These soldiers will not directly assault the city, they are there to maintain the encirclement ring. To actually assault the city Russia will need 250-300k of highly trained soldiers, urban combat in such a large city will be hell for Russia.

There are many things we though we knew about Russia but it turned out to be wrong. We were indeed ready for a lightning strike but was that really their strategy? When the iron curtain fell, there was an exchange of pilots. Ours flew their planes, they flew ours. It was long thought Russian pilots had no individual initiative. That they operated inside the box. A Russian pilot in the back seat made a Blue Angel in the front seat scream in horror. When the Navy pilot refused to perform a maneuver, the Russian instructor in the back seat took control and performed the maneuver. A Russian pilot bent the wings on an F-16. When confronted by what he did, he responded "What is this? A fighter plane or a sports car!" He then recalled a lecture he received from Artem Mikoyan about the MIG-29 "No pilot can break this plane! It will break you first!" What we thought would happen is quite different than what would have actually happeed

It is not typical of Russian military strategy to engage in such battles; they prefer to quickly finish or capture an area. However, when a country is fighting another that is supported by numerous allies, as was the case with Iraq and Iran, they tend to adopt a similar style. In Ukraine, both sides can observe each other’s actions. For example, when the USA invaded Iraq, their goal was to take full control, so they destroyed the Iraqi air defense system with assistance from the UK and other partners. This allowed them to operate without fear of their aircraft being shot down, enabling easy deployment of their forces. On the other hand, Russia aimed to achieve smaller objectives, such as compelling Kyiv to agree to their demands, and therefore did not destroy the entire Ukrainian air defense system, which later posed challenges for them. The current situation in Ukraine is such that even advanced American aircraft like the F-35 or F-22 would be at risk of being shot down due to Ukraine’s complex and interconnected air defense system.
Fun fact: There is no such thing as a completely stealth aircraft; they are designed to make it difficult for the enemy to detect them, but this advantage does not last indefinitely.
