      not sure its the best marge episode, streetcar is probably funnier and dynamic but scenes from a class struggle is a great marge focused episode and probably top 2 for that specific trait of really focusing on marge and no one else really and she carries it well....marge vs itchy and scratchy is solid but it focuses on roger meyers and homer and is not a totally marge centric episode and has a clear issue its covering same for life in the fast lane and streetcar...marge on the lam is ok but not the best.marge in chains and marge gets a job plus brush of greatness are ok too but lower tier marge episodes and while i like the springfield connection overall its not up to snuff as a marge centered episode either cause its more about gags and jokes and going against tropes then a real story...her episodes in seasons 8 and 9 are an embarrassment for her..neither focuses on her enough ...they are just marge gets a job 2.0 and 3.0 with whacky shenanigans

    @therealseanw.stewart2071 Před 4 lety +11

    I didn't think they'd follow up with another perfectly cromulent batch of episodes, but then BAM, second encore!
    Season 7 is yet another amazing addition to the series' library. As noted, the attitude of the Mirkin Era is in full force here, maintaining a brilliant balance of jadedness, subversion, and playful tinkering. The show masters the art of grabbing the audience through having them relate to the absurd misadventures of everyone's favorite Springfield residents. There's definitely some mystery and intrigue just like Season 6 reveled in (Jebediah Springfield, Flying Hellfish) but more often than not, it's still all about the character driven adventures, diving into the deep dark pits of humanity's preconceptions, building off of what was already established makes every character tick. Homer challenges the general public's opinion about the morbidly obese. Lisa wants to make some friends by changing her image. Bart gets caught trying to steal a video game, and then tries to reconcile with his mother. etc. etc. This is the character-savvy season, one would argue.
    This and Season 6 are both my all-time favorite seasons of any show ever made. Not to be overly sentimental or anything, but when I look back at when these episodes aired, and thinking Milhouse doing his impressions of sprinklers was just the funniest thing ever, the memories are just legendary. This show holds its place in my heart, even today, and personally, I think its humor holds up amazingly well to this day, due to the whimsical style and general jadedness and sarcasm.
    Some highlights from this season for me include the entirety of my favorite Treehouse of Horror of all-time (The giant advertisements wreaking havoc, Bart and Lisa's battle against Groundskeeper Willie's impersonation of Freddy Krueger, Homer's lapse into a CGi world), Bart and Lisa's attempt to help Roger Meyers Jr bring Itchy and Scratchy back in a clever parody of the real-life legal battle involving Mickey Mouse, the kids being put under foster care at Ned's place while Homer and Marge try to save them from becoming Flandereseseseses, Troy McClure marrying Selma in what turns into an empty relationship as well as his hosting of the 138th Episode Spectacular, Bart joining Grampa in his wild adventure to claim the treasure, the aforementioned dynamic of Bart and Marge over the holidays, Homer and his mother, Mona reuniting until she leaves again (one of the series' finest tearjerkers), Bart and Homer's epic battle against George Bush as "Two Bad Neighbors", the grand finale and reveal of Who Shot Mr. Burns (and the baby did it. Cough.), and, of course, it's no secret: the *Steamed Hams* episode. Legendary. Perfect. A masterpiece. Flawless. Legendary. My favorite episode in all of shows. One of the greatest animations ever created. ...Or you could just say that's pretty much the whole season. _Whew!_
    Smell you next season, everyone! I feel like liver and onions!

    Season 7 is definitely the best season of the show. It pretty much takes what made earlier seasons great, and built on them. Not to mention this season is great with balancing out humor with heart. Earlier seasons did that too, but this season had Mother Simpson which I consider the Jurassic Bark of The Simpsons. I think one of the biggest reasons I love Season 7 so much is because it has what also made Futurama so great with being hilarious while also being very earnest while tugging at the heartstrings as well as adding emotional depth to the characters. Another great retrospective from you Jim, and I look forward to seeing what episodes end up in the top 10 list.

I don’t think it was the best with the outlandish stories, but it always felt like it was made by people who loved The Simpsons. Loved the characters, and loved the comedy. And that’s why I think episodes like Lisa the Vegetarian and Marge Be Not Proud are so iconic. I know they’re not the most universally loved episodes for one reason or another, but they’re honestly warmer and more meaningful than the earlier heart-heavy stories.

    I wonder, will The RealJims be covering up to (and including) Season 10 with his retrospectives? For me, the moment I saw 'Take My Wife, Sleaze' and 'Eight Misbehavin' (then the rest of Season 11) I felt something was very off and weirdly disposable about the direction the writing was going then. (Though I might add I'm not one of the Anti - Scully brigade, not entirely anyway. There were many other variables occurring that were affecting the show's quality at that point. Particularly that it had run for such a long and really fruitful time anyway - God! It seems like SO LOOOONNG ago - and the writing staff were changing dramatically at that point).
    Anyway, it would be interesting to hear RealJims take on the turning point into the downward spiral post the 'Golden Era' as his commentary is always very fair, understanding, well researched and genuinely affectionate.

    • @ToonReel001
      @ToonReel001 Před 4 lety +5

      That's uncanny. I remember Eight Misbehavin' as the actual pivot point I thought the Simpsons was 'off' too, that the plots were becoming too ridiculous and the dialogue too overbearingly sitcom-y and meta. I was hoping it was a rare miss like some of Season 9 and 10 (that had foreboding signs of the show's downfall like overplaying Homer's cartoonish nasty side but were still USUALLY good), but I still had this feeling with almost every episode after. It will at least be interesting to see if Jims gets all the way to Season 11.

Back in the day Homer getting fat and meeting his mother felt like very “new” concepts, as did the whole publicity around the shooting of Mr. Burns. That said, the opening of Bart Sells His Soul is such an iconic moment for me and is about as classic as it gets (and Milhouse is incredible in that episode). Also, Flying Hellfish is such an amazing action/adventure episode, it’s one of those fleeting moments of greatness, highlighted more by the fact that it’s practically the only one of its kind.
