    I didn't see it until another commenter pointed it out. The difference between Cav and Phillipsen in that final sprint is that Cav looked over his shoulder three times before he moved. Phillipsen didn't look at all.

    Enjoying these ones Phil. One thing I noticed whilst watching the full overhead video of Cav's finish, he turns and looks behind him twice as he is moving across checking the gap behind him. He didn't blindly just swerve like a certain other sprinter does

      From watching the intermediate sprint in the last stage it looks like a tactic “the other guy” tries to adopt in every sprint I.e. leave a slight gap against the side fence, then close it to box his competitor out.. he is an absolute cretin that deserves to be kicked out of the tour..

    In last year's Tour, Tadej was coming off of a bad wrist injury that happened in the spring and he was unable to ride for over a month. He got to the Tour and he was neck and neck with Vingegaard on all the mountain stages except one. Tadej cracked on that one stage because the injury meant he wasn't in top form and that ended his hopes for a win. This year Vingegaard had a much worse crash and injury, and it's a miracle that he made it to the Tour at all. It's even a bigger miracle he's in the top three. But the mountain stages are looming, and I'm predicting that Vingegaard's quick return to the Tour will catch up to him on one of the climbs just like what happened to Tadej last year. If there are no mishaps forTadej, he has to be the odds on favorite this year.

    • @ashurany

      Not unreasonable by any stretch. If it happens, people would largely expect it. Yet, it could be that JV (or Remco...and Roglic, who were also injured pretty seriously, though not to the extent) defies this. As a non-expert, JV doesn't seem to my eyes to be in top form, but yet he's in the mix and clearly Visma is doing what it can to preserve him, hoping that he will defy expectations.

    The chain drop thing is a known Shimano issue. They don't have a clutch on their road groups so there is enough chain bounce on the unloaded portion of the chain closer to the road to drop a chain on the outside when going from sprint to 0 rider power input. Sram has a Orbit fluid damper clutch so it happens far less on those groupsets. This chain bounce happens even on smooth roads and being in the hardest gear makes it easier to drop on the outside.
    Its scariest for fast descents. Safa Brian had it happen to him on film when going near 50mph in this video czcams.com/video/KV51udbBj-w/video.html but thankfully recovered.
    I say this as someone who runs Shimano over SRAM road groupsets.

      Same here on power and sprinting. I'm old and have a clear memory of rear hubs/wheels never doing this when there were cup and cone bearings. As soon as there were sealed bearing rear hubs - that seems to be the change. Smaller bearings that have stiff rubber seals are my guess at what pushes the chain forward when coming off power suddenly. With me it's not much power just the quick change.

    Would they really need a gravel bike for this stage? Most recent road bikes have clearance for 32mm tires. The gravel didn’t look that chunky. 32mm tires actually roll faster than 28’s or 30’s at lower pressures with more traction. I wouldn’t want to be mid pack and breathing all that dust! They really need to apply magnesium chloride to these roads to keep the dust down. I liked seeing aggressive moves on the gravel by Remco and Tadej! Matteo Jorgensen may prove to be the the most important domestique to Jonas. The kid’s a beast! He’s the best American rider in Europe at this point!

  • @ambulowan
    @ambulowan Před 9 dny +7

    The biggest problem with the Gravel stage is that it showed you how boring normal stages are. They are pretty boring as nothing happens compared to a Gravel stage.
    The footage was good, there were many attacks. Remco managed to attack, and Tadej and Jonas had to follow. There was always something happening.
    The only thing that can be criticized is the newly laid loose surface. Not gravel itself, but the extreme way it was artificially created.
    Other than that, it’s something that tests and showcases the strength of the teams once again. Jonas had two flats and had to use a helper's bike. He also said that the team closed a gap for him when he couldn't follow himself.
    Other than watching the GC competition for first place, it's going to be pretty boring going back to watching regular stages.
    Here is an idea, get rid of TT on roads. It's a stupid category that favors heavy $ investment into Aero gains where only a few people even race.
    Make it into a Gravel TT, the resistance is not wind but the surface, way more watchable and favors different kind of athletes.

  • @RobertJWaid
    @RobertJWaid Před 9 dny +1

    I continue to be bothered by the dust kicked up by the support vehicle(s) in cross-country races and these gravel bike races. It makes it difficult to see the action and it can't be good for the athletes. The benefit of being in front use to be you could avoid much of the dust. Could you imagine if it was wet and the lead rider getting covered in mud by the support motorcycles? BTW: Nice commentary.

  • @patrickmohl3723

    As far as I saw, none of the teams rode gravel bikes. It looked like everyone just ran 30s or 32s on their normal bikes which looked like plenty. The mechanics are changing out tires every few days anyways so I don’t think there were any additional logistical challenges for the gravel stage related to equipment.

    As cool as gravel in the tour was or wasn't, that logistical factor is something i hadn't thought about and is very hard to argue with in terms of whether or not gravel should be part of the tour. Perhaps in some future where race bikes morph toward "all-road" bikes and are generally more adaptable, so they only need wheels or something, who knows.
