  • GOSHEN is a powerful documentary depicting the diet and active lifestyle of the indigenous Rarámuri, a light-footed running tribe, who are striving to maintain their ancient culture against all odds. The indigenous Tarahumara community is popularized in Born to Run, a best-selling novel by author Chris McDougall. The Rarámuri are renowned for their incredible long-distance running endurance and prevention of modern chronic diseases. For centuries, the Tarahumara have found a safe place of refuge in the remote depths of Mexico’s Copper Canyons. Recently, drought and famine have threatened the Tarahumara’s ability to sustain their ancient cultural traditions. GOSHEN takes you on a journey in the huarache-clad footsteps of these ultramarathon endurance athletes, highlighting the health benefits of safeguarding their way of life. Engaging and entertaining, GOSHEN will inspire you to take part in preserving the native seeds and running traditions of the Tarahumara.
    Featuring Chris McDougall, Phil Maffetone, No Meat Athlete, Will Harlan, Daphne Miller M.D.

    My grandfather was Tarahumara he married a Spanish/Aztec woman. We got the chance to visit my grandfather's family once, years ago when I was just a child. I haven't seen them since. I am writing a book about my grandparent's hard life here on the border of Mexico and the life they lived in the US. My grandfather lived to be 98 years old with no medical issues, my grandmother died at 102 from complications after surgery. They both walked every day and when I was young we make our beans and tortillas as they do here, both my grandparents ate vegetarian in most of their meals until they moved to the US. Thank you for making this video! This is great research for my book.

Mil gracias.

      Thank you and we agree, we were hoping to as well. We faced some unexpected some challenges with including more interview with Tarahumara voices. Our primary setback was that our plans to return for a second round of filming had to be cancelled due to drug wars restricting access to the canyons. The handful of interviews we did conduct in Raramuri we were unable to find a translator for unfortunately despite many efforts. We hope the Raramuri people's actions speak for themselves and deeply respect that only they can truly speak for themselves.

      @@Mike_E_DeShaman We did have a translator in person which was incredibly helpful. The challenge was more that the community we documented had never been on camera before. Some never had seen a video camera. The majority were not comfortable being interviewed. The famous runners that have traveled outside of the Copper Canyons, like Arnulfo who we interviewed, are super familiar with being interviewed. The interviews we conducted in the community and the translation we received back were not usable in our documentary.

      @danasarahfilms  Před 3 lety +1

      The Rararamuri community we filmed keep animals for grazing to help make their crop fields fertile. Of course they are not vegan or opposed to consuming meat. Their diet is plant-based not as a choice only as it is in modern societies but rather as a necessity. They will gladly eat meat, eggs, dairy etc. on special sacred occasions or whenever given the abundant opportunity. Its simply not practical to eat animal biproducts regularly or in excess due to the scarcity of being self sufficient and living off grid, which happens to have benefited their health.

    I have a question foro the people who made this documentary: Everytime the mexican people go to US, we learn and we speak English. Why you do not do the same when you come to México? Would be a good challenge for you. You gain money, followers and prestige doing this with Mexican culture. A good detail for our cultures in México would be that you as visitors are able to speak the local language. Because remember, you are the visitors, not them.

    • @danasarahfilms

      I do speak Spanish and studied Spanish in school and lived with Spanish families for many years. I agree with the importance to integrate and respect the culture of wherever I visit as a filmmaker. Unfortunately the community we visited did not primarily speak Spanish but Raramuri and this was a challenge. However we found communication through our actions and body language was universal.
