  • FREE TEMPLATE AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS DESCRIPTION.
    I love going to museums in my free time and thought maybe I should try and make a helmet from history. Now this particular helmet style is used all through video games and movies but the one I am building is not based off of any one particular area. I just looked at a bunch of reference images from Google searches and combined different aspects to make my own. I used 10 mm 6 mm & 4 mm EVA, contact cement, super glue, Plasti Dip, spray paint, and some wax/acrylic paints. You may also need the following tools: a heat gun, a Dremel with various bits, a wood burner, and a Xacto knife or box cutter. Let me know in the comments below if you would like to see more builds from this series, from shows, video games, or whatever. Please smack that like button, drop kick subscribe, and share with as many people as possible.

      mastery comes with practice and I am sure that a dad making something for his son means more than the quality of the build. Even better if you and your son learn together. I started with cardboard builds, because I could get the materials for free. Foam is just an easier material to manipulate.

    • @MuchProps
      @MuchProps  Před 4 lety

      @@aaron527 i responded to your question 2 days ago when you asked. Here it is again:
      Once you download the PDF and open it up, there will be the option to print. If you go to more settings, you will see an option titled "Scale", click the drop down menu beside it and select custom. Then you can reduce the size of all the parts at one time. My head is 24 inches around, which is what the helmet is built for. Measure the biggest part of your kid's head to find the comparison of size. My friend Cosplay Apprentice has this nifty little calculator on his website, www.cosplayapprentice.com/Cosplay%20Calculators/cosplay-pattern-scaling-calculator , that you can plug my number and your number in to get the scale %. I would add 1 or 2 percent to whatever it shoots out to be safe.

    Have you heard any feedback about the pattern for the plume being a little too large to fit in the holder. I’m at that point and I chopped about 3/4 of an inch off the end of the plume to get it to fit and one side still seems to pop out of place once I get the other end in. So far, though it’s working out real well. My problem is probably just user error though. Thanks for making it available.

      I think I just put them there to signify that I added trim work over the top of it. Sorry this build was from several years ago. The side pieces of the mohawk that you are talking about just butt up to the helmet base and the spacer. So that is my guess.

    did the paint harden the foam or what did you use so it isnt so flimsy

    • @MuchProps
      @MuchProps  Před měsícem +1

      No, the paint doesn't harden the foam. An EVA foam helmet is a bit flimsy. If you want to stiffen it up on the edges, you could always glue a support wire on the inside and then add some thin EVA to cover it up. You could also add a few layers of Mod Podge before you spray paint to stiffen it a little. Another option if you want it super rigid is to add Worbla to the outside surfaces. Or get denser EVA. There are lots of options. Hope this helps

    No, I’m not looking for Halloween costume ideas.
    I am a mom trying to help her ‘little angel’ with a school project.
    Each kid picks a character and the more details, including dressing like said character, the more points they can earn.
    My little darling chose the goddess of war Athena. In addition to weapons, apparently she has a ‘kick-a’ helmet.
    IMO, yours is the closest-in-design DIY version that a non-artist person like myself can try and not feel like an idiot just tracing the templates you provided. And, it doesn’t lock the user in designing and applying the same decorations or colors.
    Thank you. Now, if I can just get her to ‘lock in’ on 2 colors for it, since rainbow colors were ‘not the norm’ for war helmets.

      well glad I could help with the school project. I am a school teacher in my day job. I teach computers and also teach art to junior high kids. I've had several parents and students use this build for a class project. Glad to see these things put to good use. If you post to any social media I would love to be tagged in it to see what yall come up with.

      I will do that.
      BTW….. Before I have my 1st of probably many ‘senior moments’ that that are bound to occur while I attempt this, I have a few ?’s.
      1. Is there a way for making the curves/rounded bits without buying a heat gun that I would only be using on this 1 project?
      2. Have you made a spear and a shield from the same era and do you have a templates for the spear blade/shield?
      I’ve been searching for, and found a few spear and shield vids that seem adequate, but there doesn’t seem to be enough ‘detail’ shown in those vids like yours. They mention things that could be helpful, but they don’t show it.
      Also, even if I were so inclined to ‘burn in’ some of their ‘overtly detailed designs’, no1else bothered to mention the dangers about the toxic odors like you did.

    • @MuchProps
      @MuchProps  Před 2 lety

      @@ChelleD22 I will try to help:
      1. The heat gun does help a lot but you should be able to do it without. You may notice the seamlines pull apart a little. The good thing about these types of helmets, you can cover any rough spots on the base helmet with details.
      2. I have never made a spear or shield from that Era but there are lot of guys out there that have. Check Odin Makes, SKS, Punished Props, Lost Wax, Evil Ted and Cosplay Apprentice. All are super knowledgeable and might have something that would work.
      And an alternative to burning in, you could glue on stuff instead. You can buy precut letters at the hobby store or fill fondant molds with hot glue for details. I hate that others don't point out the safety issues

      I traced the templates for the helmet and I already see a way to ‘tweak’ the ‘mohawk’.
      I caught on that the pattern, once traced onto the foam, has to be cut inside the boarder line.
      However, I just wanted to be certain about 1of the dome quarters.
      ~~~~Am I right in presuming that the BACK Top is supposed to have a * and a capital R to let us know we have to flip it to make a 4th pc for the dome?
    It just bugs me how with Eva foam making a spartan Helmet you can get all the warped edges and overall kickass shape (I’m doing Leonidas from 300) but as soon as you put it on the cheeks area pushes out ever so slightly, but slightly with a spartan helmet makes it look out of wack! Any idea how to keep it in place?????? Thanks great vid
    Hey first of all i want to say that this is the best spartan helmet out there! I habe seen a lot of versions trying to get it right but this one is the best by far!
    So i downloaded the template, ordered eva foam and bought all the Tools. I cut out the helmet, Glued it...and ir doesnt fit my small head. Undortunately it is way to Big and i am having a hard time rescaling it. Could you please give me some advice on how to do so? Would love to finish this Project.. the face shield is fine, i just have to cut out a piece from the lower part that goes around the head.. but now the top dome wont fit or align.. how can i make the diameter of the top dome smaller?
    • @MuchProps
      @MuchProps  Před 4 lety +1
      Making modifications after you have built it can be tricky. My best suggestion would be to cut a strip out of the middle and then glue it all back together. I've see Dali Lomo do it before on his CZcams channel. That would be my best guess. Or you could pad the inside a little, to snug it up to your head. Or if you were to rebuild it, my friend Cosplay Apprentice has a pattern scaling calculator on his website, that you help you with the percentage to print it at: www.cosplayapprentice.com/Cosplay%20Calculators/cosplay-pattern-scaling-calculator
      Hopefully one of those suggestions will help.
    • @MuchProps
      @MuchProps  Před 2 lety +1
      It should be fine. 1 mm on the main body probably won't compromise the strength, specially not with the plume ridge supporting the middle. The cheek parts may be a little floppies but you could add wire and some 2mm foam to hide it on the inside if you needed to for rigidity.
