The West Kowloon Cultural District is taking shape on the Hong Kong waterfront as one of the world’s largest hubs for arts and culture. Go on a behind-the-scenes tour of the four venues defining the district: M+, Hong Kong Palace Museum, Xiqu Centre and Freespace. These uniquely designed buildings will house a collection of visual culture, Forbidden City treasures, Chinese opera and contemporary live performances.

Now as HK has museums, theatres and cinemas only one thing is still missing. That is appartements and living space for its population.

The physical setting is stunning: the beautiful harbor, the majestic skyline across from it, and the open space (relatively speaking) that is so precious in Hong Kong, all in a fresh enchanting juxtaposition that is sure to appeal to locals and visitors alike. The buildings themselves, however, don't look so impressive in the video. Also I get the sense that the Chinese culture being showcased will be overwhelmed by the physical buildings themselves, what with the monolithic and attention-grabbing architecture, and the desire to make it all "world class". Well I have not had a chance to visit and hope I am wrong; perhaps some expertly curated exhibits or fine performance will still impress, but I must say the video does not present anything nearly convincing enough.

Absolutely needed in a city that has grossly neglected its unique and fascinating culture. However, the delays are uncalled for, neither is the sudden ushering in of Northern culture as Hong Kong culture. (i.e. palace museum)
Not to mention, the atrocious and unfamiliar/alien term "Xiqu", when Chinese Opera is perfectly fine and immensely better at attracting foreigners.

Makes sense since all major cities have a main museum or art gallery in their city, yet HK has been lacking this. Use to hit up HK every few years, but not sure we will see this any time soon with these travel restrictions 😐

It is a true propaganda video! HK was a opened cultural city indeed but not anymore. The reputation has been tarnished by the corrupted government, freedom of speech and expression is heavily monitored, media and publications are severely censored! Would you still see poor show staged in this public venue? Every there would have been vetted and edited by the oppressive regime? Sadly HK has lost her sparkle forever!

It’s a beautiful spot to visit at the weekend and Freespace have put on some well programmed events there over the years but HK increasingly feels like a cultural wasteland. I moved here seven years ago and every single independent venue I’ve been to to see live music and arts has been closed, mostly due to landlord/government pressure around rent or dated licensing laws. There are several nice LCSD venues but for a place positioned as ‘Asia’s World City’ the programming is laughable. Any touring artists increasingly seem to skip the city for Singapore. The local independent music and arts scene (outside of the groundswell of yellow movement related engagement) is now in even more of a shocking state thanks to the double whammy of the protests and the pandemic. Will be years till we recover, if at all given the increasingly oppressive political climate.
