  • Important ICD-10-CM changes are coming soon! The 2024 changes are effective October 1, 2023. This is a summary of these changes, including changes to guidelines, and codes for: conditions and diseases, examinations/encounters, and risk factors. Most importantly, codes and guidelines were added for HIV prophylaxis and resistant hypertension. See also ICD-10-CM Coding Guidelines Made Easy 2024 available on Amazon.
New specific codes were added for conditions that previously were coded as “other specified,” such as short bowel syndrome and Lafora progressive myoclonus epilepsy. Other existing codes were expanded, adding new information about the condition. An example would be the codes for hypoparathyroidism. New codes were added codes to describe the cause of the condition. Also discussed are changes to notes, such as Excludes1, excludes2, code also, use additional code, and code first. For a complete list of changes, see www.cms.gov/medicare/icd-10/2...
