    Today I show you the excellent early 1960's Hornby Dublo 2014 Set, 'The Talisman' with the powerful A4 locomotive, 'Golden Fleece'. It is a Passenger Train Set with two L.M.S. type Super Detail Coaches. I'll show you all the contents of the set and run it later in the video. I've looked out a Meccano Marshall 3 Controller to use and a couple of extra straight bits of track to make the loop larger. I hope you enjoy seeing these items, thanks for watching

    I had this set given to me back in the day! My main trains were Hornby, but this was a new old stock from a local model shop many years after the demise of Hornby dublo! Great to see it again! Mines long gone I'm afraid.

    You have to love the old engineering that went into these vintage models. I wonder if a current Hornby model would spring into life in 63 years time? Somehow I doubt it.
    I Run my City of London from the same catalogue often and she never misses a beat.
    I also found a Tri-ang TT set recently and after a quick service she runs great too.

    Thank you! Most interesting, and it brought back many memories. I got this train set for Christmas 1959, when it was brand new on the market, as your brochure indicates. The coaches in my set were "blood and custard" rather than maroon. Also, the coaches and tender had metal couplings - not the plastic shown here. The only other differences I can see are that in 1959 there was no suppressor fitted to the power supply rail, and Hornby did not at that time supply the small spanner required to gain access to the loco motor. I had the Marshall 2 PSU which had 2 outputs - 12 v DC, and 15 v AC for points and signals. Eventually, I had a layout with various points and sidings, another 0-6-2 loco (BR no 69550), and more rolling stock including a breakdown crane and the Travelling Post Office. All this on a weyroc base board 6' x 4' which my mum (the techie expert in my family!) got from the local joiner. I remember I had great problems in getting the TPO to work. Instructions said to use the 15v AC output from the PSU, but that didn't work. Problem eventually solved by using an Ever Ready 9v grid bias battery (does anyone here remember them?) from the local radio shop.

      @MrSnooze  Před 3 měsíci +1

      Thanks for looking. That sounds like an earlier set. Much better with the meatal couplings. The solenoids can sometimes play up in the Mail coach. I wonder if you had a dodgy one. Funny it worked ok on that battery. Take care, all the best to you

      @johnarmstrong7709 Před 3 měsíci

      @@MrSnooze Thanks for your reply. I don't think it was dodgy. I think it was the addition of 15 v AC to the DC voltage running through the rails. Very strange, anyway.

  • @marksvintagerecordplayers

    Thanks for showing this set running. The 2015 version with the all metal coaches is the earlier version of this set. The number changed to 2014 when the Super Detail coaches became available in 1961. As others have said, these coaches are usually found with the compensated type bogies which suggests that yours is a later production set. The coaches are not LMS but BR MK1 coaches with "E" prefix running numbers to correctly represent Eastern Region stock. Interestingly, the stick-on "Talisman" label has been fitted to the wrong side of the headboard. If you turn the headboard round you will find it a better fit.

    Despite the corrosion, I think this is the best set you have ever shown us Jonathan. I do hope you will treat us to a running session on the Super 4 mainline. Thank you for opening up the pamphlet and showing the wagons. I can now update my inventory to include the catalogue numbers for the few Hornby Dublo wagons I have. At 7.50 in the video you mention hand rails. They are in fact the hosepipes for filling the water tanks in the roof above the toilets. I like the HD rail although I only have one piece in my collection and that is not a full length piece.

    Always a joy to watch these Hornby Dublo products live again. Sooo far ahead of their time. I’m busy putting together my 3-rail layout, of which 60016 Silver King is the star. Quite a few eBay purchases are awaiting collection from my cousins in Kent this summer. A 4MT 2-6-4T, a nicely reliveried BR plain black 0-6-2T, 6 blood and custard tinplate coaches, 9 pairs of isolating points and a Bristol Castle.
    None of the items are mint or boxed, but they’re for running so I don’t mind. Can’t wait to get my hands on them! I must find an HD spanner…
    I love the Super Detail rolling stock too. Some of my 2-rail SD coaches have metal bogies and couplings, others are all plastic. I wonder when that changed?
    Lovely set this one, I can see myself in the market once again in a few years when my 2-rail layout build is started. With current prices of modern models I’ll stick to 2-rail HD. Still an absolute bargain.

      Hello Robin, It sounds like you have some great items to add to your layout soon. I think with a bit of patience, sourcing track and building a two rail Hornby Dublo layout would be a great project. I hope you have success. As to coupling changes there is a lot I don't know about the system but I think the plastic couplings came in towards the end of the fifties or early sixties. Thanks for looking, all the best to you

    Always lovely to see Dublo. The SD coaches I never tire…..Two points……its unusual to see those particular coaches with corrosion. Corrosion is more common on the later SD coaches made at the end of Dublo but an interesting thing with those two coaches are that they have the later style bogies without compensation. I think they were only ever available in the sets if they were bought as a separate items they always had compensated bogies. So they are later manufactured coaches and if they had the same tinplating process as the later SD coaches it doesnt surprise me that they are susceptible to corrosion. I have found with that design of power connector that they sometimes go open circuit where connected to the rail. I have resoldered ones that I have found defective.

    I think 'The Talisman' was an LNER service - hence the streamlined A4 loco - so maybe the coach livery was BR maroon rather than LMS? A lovely set to own and run though, despite the wear. I have a few bits of track - it mixes and matches with Lima, Playcraft, Peco code 100 and Hornby Series 6 quite successfully so in many ways it was setting the standard.

    Great video Johnathan. The set would appear to be a fairly late production issue based on the uncompensated super detail coach bogies. Always a pity when corrosion sets in. Unfortunately restoration is vitually impossible and I would just leave alone.

  • @skin150263
    @skin150263 Před rokem

    Looks to be in generally very nice condition apart from the odd bit of corrosion. Two rail Hornby Dublo track was much more to scale than Super 4 and also was nickel silver. It looks very like modern Peco code 100 but with the proper sleeper spacing for OO. I think this was part of its undoing though as it's much more fragile than Super 4 and I find it's really hard to take apart without damage to the moulded chairs and so on. This and the complexity of the live frog points with single and double isolating rails was just too complicated for what was essentially a toy. Although Meccano did bring out the Simplec points, by that time it was too late and most people had turned to the simpler and less expensive Triang track. I guess your terminal rail also had a bit of corrosion somewhere maybe caused by being in a damp box. I only have one two rail HD terminal rail and someone has soldered the connectors to the track. This may show that it's not an uncommon problem. All good wishes, Keith
