Gravel the new road? Wouldn't it be the old road?
not gravel question but is there a way to make or buy a bone conduction aero helmet? I want to hear music but would like an aero helmet (mainly as has a visor on it that better than cycle glasses as glasses make wind hit my eyes so they water at like 15+mph)
Nice seeing Katherine up for bat. Excellent contributions.
Cheers John
Big "UP" to Catherine, really comes over so well as a presenter! Clear voice and so relaxed and confident!
Stay tuned Ben!
She should definitely be a permanent host on GCN.
Katherine "rocks"!
Haha, thanks Rodrigo
Love that you guys are finally talking about the Dirt Kanza! It's brutal, epic, and crazy fun.
We can't wait to follow Katherine!
First Emma, now Katherine, what a delight. More please!
Stay tuned!
The best thing about riding in general is to see a road and take it. No matter if asphalt, gravel or dirt. Just go explore and get out of the norm.
And people should look at the stones to define if they need to change up the bike tires. 28's won't always work.
Cheers Anthony, we agree with you there, great to get out on two wheels!
Great job Katherine. Hope GCN keeps us updated on your training.
Hey Robert, of course, we will! We are super excited!
More Katherine please😁
We will be following Katherine for the Dirty Kanza ride to stay tuned!
Yes! She is very charming and comfortable on camera!
Katherine is an awesome add. Good luck in Kanza!
Cheers Bill, we can't wait!
Just received my new socks ,soo proud :) Founder member in the house !! great Q+A as always , Katherine, is awesome!
Welcome to the Club! 💪
I'm now running tubeless on MTB, CX and finally my road. I love it.
As a former mtber (though never very gnarly) I recently brought my first drop bar bike. You guessed it, its a gravel bike. It just strikes me as the best mix of traits for me and what I like to ride. I ride majority road but love to jump down tracks and other paths. The comfort and stability on road is perfect for me too!
Awesome! It's great to see riders from both disciplines meeting in the middle!
Here in the U.S. Midwest a lot of local bike shops to 'Intro to Gravel' type rides and seminars. But its very popular here.
Please keep us updated on Katherine’s gravel challenge!!!
Of course, we can't wait!
I'm so excited for you Katherine! Can't wait to see your video.
Same here SioLazer, we can't wait!
Bring Katherine back! She did so well!
Thanks Andy, we will be following Katherine as she tackles the DK so stay tuned!
Well done Catherine, you did a great job! Loved your presenting style, please can we see you on more videos xx
Cheers Lynne. We will be following Katherine for the Dirty Kanza so stay tuned!
i think "gravel" is actually the ORIGINAL "road"
smp156 before cyclists lobbied the gov to smooth them out
More Katherine. More Gravel.
Hi Katherine nice to know who runs the socials!
My gravel bike gets used on and off road. I use Continental Contact Travel tyres. Roll really nicely on tarmac and grippy for dirt and gravel. Very puncture proof too. A little heavier, but worth it. They do a wide range of widths.
I will say it again! I LOVE the GCN show!👊🏻💪🏻👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Love hearing the Danny boy say Dirty Kanza... Caught myself googling Dirt Arkansan as if there was a race my former homeland I didn't know about... Great show as always..Keep up the great work GCN is the best! @Kathyrn hope you enjoy being stateside.
Thanks E D, great to hear you enjoyed the vid!
Great work Katherine. 👍
We don't call them ordnance survey maps here in Canada (nor the USA, I believe) but we have the equivalent. They're called topographical maps here (topos for short) and are available for the entire country. The most commonly used by rallyists, hikers, hunters, etc. here are the 1/25000 scale. They show lots of detail, houses, elevation contour lines, different kinds of roads. They are all available digitally now I think. Last time I checked there was still a small fee to acquire them but they may be free in the USA.
Cheers for that Robert!
Katherine is a natural on camera! Would love to see more gravel tips from her on the show, as well as her progress with DK200. Perhaps as the host of the Global Gravel Network? ;)
Hey Cory, stay tuned to follow Katherine do the DK!
Gravel riding is only hash terrain touring really. Its been around forever. Its not new. When I was a kid in the seventies most bikes were utility even if they had drop handlebars. Mine had 1 1/4"" tires. Its what Road and Mountain grew out of as a result of chasing an ideal.
This, and the video that Emma and Matt did of Adulacia, make me wonder about drive train wear. Sand and gravel over distance maybe over days. Do I really want to tour the coast roads of the Algarve?
It’s probably getting more popular as people are sick to death of nearly been killed every other ride on their road bike, sorry for the negative slant! Nice vid 👍
A really great video covering a topic slightly off the normal ones. Also a really impressive and composed presenting effort from Katherine on what is perhaps only her second appearance, you would have thought she'd been doing it for ages! Good luck to her on the Dirty Kanza.
Thanks John! Need all the luck I can get.... Katherine
For long events like DK200 - I think you can store a Camel back or water bladder in a frame bag and use a retractable clip (like for a magnetic ID card) to keep the nozzle on your bars (hook it on your cable housing).
Regarding a support crew - make sure they have some cleaning supplies ready to rinse off your bike and lube your chain, clothing and spare lights if needed (spare socks and gloves), extra chamois cream and a variety of snacks including some heavier real food like a burrito or a sandwich. Also, have a bonk-breaker snack: chocolate, a cold soda, pickle juice, whatever it is!
Thanks Kevin, some really great advice there, Katherine will really appreciate that!
Lots of salty comments about how gravel is silly, and people wonder why others are put off cycling. You should ride what you want how you want. No one is complaining when GCN cover a new super fast aero bike, so why is it an issue when they cover a new type of riding on bikes that are far more practical for the majority of riders.
Adam Craggs practical ordinary people and racers don't mix, plus these cx and gravels blur the distinction of road and mtb
Hey Adam, it's all about getting more people on two wheels 🚲
Bought my gravel bike in January, a Giant Tough Road 0 and has completely switched up my riding and I live near Haldon Hill in Devon which Katherine will know well and the network of fire, gravel, single track riding is mind blowing and I have put together 30-40 mile loops of mixed terrain. Simply. just. fun. No power meter, no clock as such, simply just riding. It will never replace my road machines, but it compliments them perfectly. But don't forget, Cannondale started life as a bike packing (aka Gravel bike) company back in 1971 !!!!
Hey P, Haldon certainly is great! Even riding there over winter there are plenty of trails that are good in the wet which can be a bit rare here in the UK! Completely agree with you, hope you have a great summer on your new steed! Katherine
Katherine was great. Best wishes on your Dirty Kanza!
Cheers Kevin, we are super excited!
Katherine is an absolute natural.. Well done, I hope we see more of you.
Cheers Colin, stay tuned as we follow Katherine tackle the DK
My gravel bike has 3 sets on bottle cage mounts on the frame - the extra on is located under the down tube AND two more sets of mounts on the fork's legs, so you can have up to 5 bottles, though it mat be useful to have the bottom used for carrying spares and tools - lowering center of gravity - and use 800-900 ml bottles (e.g. Elite offers ones with cap - nice tip for dusty road). So one can easily put 3+ litres of water/fluid on a bike!
Cheers Igor!
Good luck at the Dirty Kanza 200 Katherine! Great job presenting.
Cheers Patrick, we can't wait 👊
For lots of water, use a bladder pack. You barely notice them! Xxxx
Awesome video. Thanks for answering my question! GCN rocks!
James Kendrick was that intentional..? 😉
Katherine is very comfortable and well spoke like a true presenter . Would love to see more of her on the channel
Hey podg, we are following Katherine for the Dirty Kanza so stay tuned!
Global Cycling Network great. Keep her to replace matt. You guys need some young blood 🙈🙉🙊
Superb. Really enjoyed this episode, and thanks to Katherine for being such a good sport.
Thanks roof30, really glad you enjoyed the video!
I don’t do graver rides but i love riding my trek Crockett on my daily commute in NYC after the winter and sooo many potholes with 40 mm tires and i love it. It is very confortable on my aging bones. For my weekend rides i use my Cervelo S3 2016 with 25 mm tires.
Nice stuff Gino!
Gino924 some of our roads count as gravel riding.
Bring Katherine back after her event for a follow up. For things she liked or would do differently etc...
Hey scootosan, that's a great idea! Cheers, Katherine
I use a CX bike for CX, bike packing and gravel riding as well. CX bikes do it all.
Naebother Pal me too, not an n+1 man myself. Love having a bike that does it all
Touring is a the forbidden word, hahaha.
Touring means heavy kitchen sink attached to your bike. But bike packing means aero, light long distance everyday set up :P
Awesome stuff Rafael!
Katherine - I'm in Austin, TX now but grew up in Emporia. 2018 will be my 8th DK so I like to think I've seen just about everything this race can throw at you. My wife's parents still live there and every year we have a spaghetti dinner Friday night. You and your GCN crew are invited to join us this year. If you can't make it, I'll try to find you to welcome you to Kansas!
Hey Craig, wow your 8th!? Excellent effort!
There are smooth roads left! Luxembourg is full of them! :)
Fantastic video all. However, the reflected glare of the lights on Katherine’s glasses was distracting. Not bad, but something to consider for future vids.
Love all your content.
Thanks WoTExpat, glad you enjoyed the video!
Have a great Dirty Kanza, Kathrine
Cheers, stay tuned!
0:38 Me too.
For me, the appeal of gravel-road riding is: 1. fun. Gravel riding seems more free-spirited than paved road riding. I feel bad about myself if I'm having a bad day and get dropped. On gravel, it's usually more about the fun. 2. safer. Highways are busy, devoid of bike lanes and filled with distracted drivers. An acquaintance was killed out on the highway a few years ago on his road bike. The gravel drivers are at least slower and, well, there are fewer of them. 3. Quieter. The sound of traffic is fatiguing. The sound of nature is rejuvenating!
The down side to gravel: 1. remote. I took an unplanned stop due to dehydration 29 miles from home once, and had to walk for a while. I couldn't have even told someone where I was to come get me. Not fun. 2. farm dogs. I love them, but there are some that truly scare me. 3. dusty. The farm trucks maybe won't hit me from behind like I'm worried about on the highway, but they will certainly cover me in dust. 4. Wash boarding. Many of the roads can vibrate me so much I get a headache.
I like both types of riding!
I completed the DK100! A bit proud of myself. I'll shoot for the DK200 next year! Congratulations Katherine Moore for your excellent ride at the DK200!
Geoff
Katherine: hmmmm .....a new GCN presenter? That’s how they worked Emma in: a few expert segments and before you know it, a full presenter. I’m not complaining, I think they brighten up the channel!
We will be following Katherine as she takes on the Dirty Kanza so stay tuned!
Katherine knows her stuff. Best of luck at Dirty Kanza!
Cheers Drew, we can't wait!
6 weeks in Belgium. Google maps for cycling: Fietspad, kassaien, unmade roads, farm tracks. I shall definitely be buying a gravel bike. Soon!
Sounds amaaazing Steve, not at all jealous...
Well done you two!!
Cheers Darrin!
I seriously implore you guys at GCN to check out the gravel riding in North and western Wisconsin.
Yall should do a poll to decide for once and all
More videos with Katherine, she's really good!
We will be following Katherine for the DK so stay tuned!
Get the Tacx bottle cage mount which clamps to your seat rails. It can hold two additional bottles and if you don't need it, you can clip off the mount in seconds or swap it for their saddle bag. If you need a fifth bottle get an sks bottle cage mount and mount it to your stem.
Thanks for the top tip!
I've been riding gravel roads here in Vermont predominantly -went out today for a nice 30 mile jaunt, as a matter of fact. I think GCN should hop across the pond and check out an enormously cool and popular gravel fondo called The Deerfield Dirt Road Randonee (D2R2 for short. One of the hardest (and most beautiful) rides you'll ever do.
Great idea Phil!
Personally anything Bike what is not to Like (Road, Gravel, Trail, Snow). Mostly evolves around what type of Clothing to wear to be comfortable.
Two water bottles and a camelbak. You will also be able to put lots of gear in the camelbak.
I dont do gravel. However i do enjoy sleek 35c dropbar decending. Haha
Good luck with dirty Kanza Katherine! In terms of drinking water I find that carrying two large water bottles within the frame triangle plus an extra litre or two (depending on the weather) in a rack or handle bar bag is good for about 100 km. I don't like wearing a pack so I ensure that the bike has the racks and/or bags for clothes, tools, spares, phone, camera, water and snacks. I find the extra weight is negligible because you have got to pace yourself on long rides anyway and for me its about finishing the ride not competing against anyone else.
David Lewington thank you that's handy! Alas as a rather short rider I'm struggling with fitting even two bottles inside the frame! Definitely agree that carrying enough water is paramount though, will find a way! Katherine
When training for an endurance gravel ride, how much training do you do on gravel, and how much on road?
Looking into getting into gravel next year. The roads here in the Black Hills aren’t very conducive to road riding. However the forest service roads and trails are abundant.
Sounds awesome Jeremy, let us know if you do!
How can we repair the shockers
Catherine is great! Please let her do more stuff
We will be following Katherine as she does the DK so stay tuned!
Can you recommend a set of wheels for a cyclocross bike. It has to have thru axles with the following measurements 9x100 and 10x135. Its for a Storck T.I.X pro G1 frame.
Really interested in Gravel bikes because they make awesome commuters. #torqueback
You guys should do a collab with Gravel Cyclist
I’m going to ride from Washington DC to Pittsburgh, 340 miles of gravel trails. GCN, want to with me?
Sounds awesome Brian, thanks for the invite!
Sounds like the C&O and GAP. Have you done that ride before?
Thanks for the Gravel is the new Road segment. You guys and ladies are great! Ride to the level of your smile!
Cheers Mark, that's great to hear! 👊
water: 2L camelback backpack (= 3-4 bottles)
Cheers Jonathan!
For Katherine: For hydration I have a Camelbak Skyline (10L) It rides lower than other hydration packs. I have water bottle holders on my front forks. They are for oversize bottles and I can carry 1.5 l on each side. I have a water bottle holder on my handlebar and two on my frame. One liter bottles I also have a trunk bag, (for tools, tire , tubes and food,) that I can put an additional two liter water bag.

Your welcome Katherine. Good luck and be safe we left England in 1633
A few videos to use on the trainer and to give you an idea how the front pack rides.
Study the weather (Almanac) you could see tornado warnings to hail the size of baseballs. wind always, if no wind humidity, Temp can drop 30 degrees F after a storm. Have safety orange or green something to find you in the mud (just kidding)

I got what is described as an endurance bike take it on road and off road forest tracks gravel etc good fun but just be prepared
to change your tyres a bit more often and i do deep clean and lube every two weeks
Cheers Nick, glad you enjoy it!
I would not do the DK without going tubeless. I tried a Kansas race last year and pinch flatted so many times I DNF'd the race. There are lots of larger rocks that are hard to avoid.
Time to save up for a gravel bike. MTB trails here are more on the hilly smooth side.
hi great gravel stuff. On my commuter Scott Speedster CX Bike i ride tubeless "Challenge Gravelgrinder Pro", 36mm on tubeless Ready DT Swiss R24. Alternatively sometimes i go on my "Schwalbe One TLE", 28mm, having had a simple setup by simply putting a tape in my non - tubless wheelset. They both role equaly fast, whilst the first are much more comfortable and require less attention to potholes etc. Thanks to tubeless and sealant flats are no more (cross fingers). Wouldnt ride tubed again. No flats is definitely faster :) and thats important on commutes and maybe also on gravel events, i guess.
Cheers for that juergen!
granted I live in AZ, USA, on long gravel rides most of us use a CamelBak (gasp).....and the worse thing about gravel riding is losing phone signal.
Katherine seems like a natural born presenter can't wait for the dirty Kanza video
Neither can we!
my bum and hands are still feeling last weekends 190k of gravel
Tubeless for sure plus consider tires specifically designed to be puncture resistant such as teravail.com/tires/cannonball#TR7200. The Dirty Kanza runs through a the flint hills of Kansas and the gravel can be very sharp.
BTW -- Yes, it hurts more to crash on gravel.
Cheers for that Michael!
I wear baggy shorts on road
Nice job presenting Katherine. hmmm... gravel riding? Based on the footage we keep seeing I wonder if "mud" riding is a better description. I guess that's the rainy UK for you.
True Colin, it could be classed as Cyclocross for most of the year! It certainly is pretty wet here most of the time, which makes dusty dry trails even more exciting in our (often too short) summer! Katherine
Haha. Here in the American Midwest, with so much gravel to ride it extends my outdoor riding to year-round. And, it's mostly dry.
I want to upgrade my wheels and bike frame for cyclocross racing. I'll need to do this in two stages (years) as I don't have the money for what I want right now. can I get a pair of thru-axel disc wheels and use them on my quick release frame now and then upgrade my frame next year? #torqueback
It seems like your OS map is analogous to the USGS (United States Geological Survey) maps over here. They tend to be topographical maps with different shadings for different types of terrain.
Thanks for that z.browning!
I ride off road all of the time and throughout the winter. I have a hybrid bike and some of the paths and bridleways I come across are shared with pedestrians, horses, children, dog walkers. Quite a few have hearing and site issues and this must be taken into consideration. Some of the gravel riders I see, do not pay attention to courtesy to these issues and why do a lot of these cyclists do not have bells on their bikes? Often I see riders going way to fast past these people and horses, near to livestock, etc. No hi viz clothing. Please, please, GCN could you do an article about these problems and try and address these issues. Great work you do, I really enjoy learning about new tips and tricks on your channel. Thank you!
Really nice to put a name to the words, given the amount I harass GCN social media. Hiya!
Haha hi, Michael, we hadn't noticed 😉
Michael McDermott you are on the police register.
Jon Cannings Outrageous.
I'd be apprehensive putting my frames and group sets through the gravel mill.... Stone chippings and possible falls
Hi guys! I started riding with your videos 2 months ago and i am doing sooo hreat, i lost 2 sizes, lost lots of cm everywhere, my levels of resistance are at their highest and i am loving it all together. I have one question though... the outside of my feet hurt like cramping, what am i doing wrong? Thanks so much for your videos, you guys changed the way i see exercising.
It may be your shoes don't properly fit you. different brands have different widths of shoes. It may be worth going in to a decent bike shop and getting some fitted
Hey Denise, really glad you enjoy our videos. Burt has given a good answer, heading to your local bike shop can be a good way of getting some better fitting shoes.
Burt Douglas Thanks Burt, i will definitely try that, like i said, i started 2 months ago so i was just using my running shoes. Thanks for the answer!!!
Global Cycling Network thanks! I will try that!
Is it possible to change from shimano TX-30 shifters to an integrated headset for a road bike #torqueback
I am an American living in Europe that is shopping for GPS computer with turn by turn navigation that is good on multiple continents. I recently learned many have map sets loaded based on where they are sold What are the best options?
Katherine, if you need a support crew for DK, I'd be happy to help. I've never been to the race, but I am just a few hours away in Lincoln, Nebraska-The home of the Gravel Worlds.
Cheers Aaron!
Where I'm from they glue gravel to the top of roads that need repaired, so every road is a gravel ride.
Gcn is love Gcn is life
Thanks Shemil! Glad you enjoy our videos!
Who doesn't? 😃
GBN - Gravel Bike Network or variations on that theme?? GGBN etc
all things being equal falling off on gravel defintely hurts more than bitumen
#torqueback I have my first set of stickers with name and flag for my bikes. How should I position them on frame to make it look really professional?
How can I join you guys Network I would love to be a member at gcn
