- The Conservative Party has been forced onto the defensive after it emerged the prime minster left D-Day events early to record a TV campaign interview.
Rishi Sunak said his personal itinerary was set out weeks ago but accepted he had made a mistake by not amending it.
The prime minister's opponents jumped on the admission with Reform UK leader, Nigel Farage, accusing Mr Sunak of not being "patriotic".

on my mother's side, we lost two of three brothers to D-day. On my fathers, my great-grandfather spent the war in a camp. My grandmother once told me of how, after the Americans arrived her father returned, but she didn't recognize him. Not even the voice was the same. Sunak's disrespect cuts deep in this country. He really has no idea, I think, just what he has done.
