Great Western #90 Returns!

- In mid-February of 2013, the Strasburg Railroad began another season of tourist service with 2-10-0 #90 in charge of the trains. But this visit had some unexpected surprises in store...
Before the trips began, #90 was temporarily repainted in to her 1950's/1960's Great Western livery, with aluminum-coated smokebox, white trim on the running boards and driving wheels, black numberplate and "Diamond" logo on her cab. These changes were made in preparation for a Pete Lerro-sponsored charter that would take place later that week.
And another surprise came in the form of Pennsylvania Private Observation Car "Francis L. Suter" being added to the consist! It was very rare to see this piece of "Private Varnish" roam the rails on a regular tourist train, but it was a welcome sight, indeed!
So, enjoy the sights and sounds of Strasburg's inaugural runs of the 2013 season, filmed in true HD Quality - featuring snowy scenery, billowing smoke plumes and Great Western #90, reborn again!
Enjoy, One and All!

She has the greatest whistle/bell
Great shots! 90 looks good in her throwback scheme, almost wish they would leave it on a bit longer.
The one of the four great western steam locomotives that survived. The others being 2-8-0 “Consolidation” locomotives 60, 75, and 51.
I think 90 looks better in that look than her classic Strasburg appearance
one of the finest decapods steam engine
Awesome 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Yeah.
Must of been rare to see the PRR Francis L Suter at the end of the train instead of the front since it's normally at the front of the train.
I'm the locomotive general foreman at The Great Western Railway........and I would very much like to see the GW 90 back in Loveland Colorado. Back in our engine house. I even have a 1897 Pullman Business Car for her to pull around. Man, what a site that would be.
waukee56 Railroader that's very cool 90 is my favorite steam locomotive! Something about Reading 6 chimes are just purely amazing too!
I too would love to see her back on her home rails, she is nice on Strasburg, but to me she just looks so much better in her Great Western getup pulling beet trains.
Not sure if its just me but I think 90 looks better with a white smokebox and kinda wish she had the GW logo on her tender more like 475 and 89 since they've worn their railroad logo alot and 475 is still wearing her N&W logo on her tender and has since 2017
Interesting to note; most of her lettering for this scheme was magnetic. Strasburg originally intended to return her to her previous scheme after the charter. If you look closely, you can tell that the paint on the sides of the cab is a slightly different shade than the rest of the cab, and you can see the blank magnetic strips that were used to cover the word STRASBURG on her tender...
That is true, Brian. Though I heard the Diamond logo on the cab was applied to one of the magnets using vinyl transfers.
Go me for showing up in one of your shots. lol. Good stuff bud!
What happened to the 5 chime that 90 used to have it back in her days on the Great Western Railroad of Colorado?
Your guess is as good as mine.
@@trainmaster844 would be awesome to have it back on her since the 50s.
Great Shots mans!
The last shot. ;)
There are two ways of doing things. The Great Western way or the...WHOOPS WRONG COUNTRY!
Do you know when she might wear that beautiful scheme again?
Lol - which shot did you appear in? I know you were right beside me at the Maize Maze crossing.
huh, her whistle sounds a bit different to me than her usual Reading 6-chime... I thought her 6-chime was higher pitched...
It's still the same Reading 6-chime. It's just been worn down a little from years of use, like any other whistle would be.
oh... out of curiosity, what kind of whistle would she have worn on the Great Western Railway?
ToonLink682
Not sure. The mystery around that isn't really solved. But photos have shown that she had a Nathan 5-chime at one point late in her career.
oh, cool!
That and it's winter time. Horns and whistles tend to sound flatter due to the density of the air which attenuates (weakens) the sound more than a hot summer day would. Otherwise it would be more defined and higher-pitched, or sharp, since the air is less dense.
Does anyone know if she has USB outlets on her in case someone who rents it has a smartphone
The private car “Francis Suter”?
@@trainmaster844 yes
@@trainmaster844 I might rent it for a vacation and me and my dad have smartphones so usb chargers are needed
@@rockyfanatic6846 I haven’t been inside the car, so I unfortunately wouldn’t know.
