Two legends of Indian Classical Music. Ustad Shahid Parvez and Ustad Zakir Hussain. This performance of Raga Malkauns is fantastic and I hope you enjoy it.
I think general audience with no or little knowledge of Indian classical muic who usually go by the sound of instruments are more drawn towards the flamboyance that is Zakir Hussain. He makes the drums come alive. People who understand music better are appreciate of the complexity of the Sitar that Ustad Shahid Parvez is producing and the beauty of rhythms that Zakir is complementing. Both artists are at the same level of mastery of their respective instruments and people don't recognize that.
Some of his funs love his personality so much that they love to come in his concerts or shows to just see him and listen to him when he talks about music or Tabla.
Zakirji, influenced deeply by Pandit Ravi Shankar never liked unruly crowds. Those who have attended his concerts can here him scolding audiences very sharply despite the seniority of the artist whom he was accompanying. His temper in such areas is renowned. Here, both artists are in their late 30''s, meaning that this concert is at least 27-28 years ago. Zakirji is not smiling in his usual way of appreciating Shahidji. Rather, there is some embarrassment in his repeated smile. Audiences must be disciplined and trained, much like children. But hats off to Shahidji for his graciousness. Other artists would have lectured the audience.
Actually Zakir lives for crowds! The gimmicks he does are not classical music. You are right Zakir is influenced by Pandit RS who was the king of showmen in indian music. Swapan Chaudhary, Anindo and Kumar bose are more of serious musicians then Zakir, in this respect.
I disagree. The calculations and upaj that Zakir bhai does is unparalleled. There's a video on CZcams where he has played 6.5 beats and improvised in that. I agree that he does a lot of gimmicks. But that is to make the crowd enjoy classical music without knowing the deep technicalities.
Narayan Bhavaria sir do you even know the level of complexity and vastness of repertoire with which he plays? He is as serious as it gets and is extremely skilled in his bols and ability to play diverse compositions. Those gimmicks are signs of his humility and desire to make the audience feel connected.
Zakir bhai is a combination of skills and showmanship. I agree that he has played a lot to the gallery, but he single handedly pulled crowds and is commercially the most successful Tabliya the world has ever seen. Even when it comes to accompaniments, he is a gem who can't be compared to anyone. Listen to him with the likes of Amjad Ali Khan, Vilayat Khan or Budhaditya Mukherjee, you will see a different ZH who has a much greater understanding of raagdari and bandishes than most other tabliyas.
When accompanying others, it is imperative that the Tabalchi allow the lead instrument to dominate. Here Zakir just could not control his impulse for showmanship. He was encouraging the already unruly crowd to pull against Shahid. There is some real delicate rendering by Ustad Shahid here which has been overshadowed by Zakir's childish behaviour.
Sir, perwez saheb and zakir sahebs sitar n tabla performance enhancing charm of malksuns to the superb peak, so sweet and touchy rhythmic.... Regards for both of the ustads ji
I endorse Syed Bhais opinion - i remember once in between a concert Pandit Shiv Kumarji told - it is quite common being exited while hearing some boals of Tabla and clapping now and then - but at the same time U miss the beauty of main music...
The tabalia, a legend in his own right, did not follow the cardinal rule that his primary duty was to provide "theka" with occasinal tehais and tukras in collaboration with the artist he was accompanying, His father and guru was a gem of an example as an accompanying tabalia and earned respect and admiration the world over. In late 1940s, at a concert at khazanchi Road, Patna during Dussera, Ustad Ahmedjan Thirakwa was accompanying Ustad Faiyaz Khan Sa'b. As was his unique style, Khan Sa'b started his alap in the way Dhrupadias do and when it ended and rhythmic singing started in very slow tempo, Thirakwa Sab picking up the "taal" and "laya", started with a "chakradar tehai" which took quite sometime to complete and before the "sam" came. Khan Sa'b had stopped singing and on completion of the "tehai" bowed to the tabla maestro with most polite praises and looking towards the audience said, "Inka jaisa tabla koi bajata nahin. Aap khusnaseeb hain ki ye aapke samne baja rahen hain. Sun lijiye dil bharke." These words made Thirakwa Sa'b extremely apologetic and then the great maestros started again.

I think it's important to point out that Zakir-ji is not playing much at all, in his entrance. Even he is laughing at them, and after the most short of entrances, he asks Shahid-ji to 'go ahead', like he doesn't want to encourage the audience. People are over reacting on this. He even laughs at the reaction in the first 10 seconds. Clearly, he knows that they are overbearing, but what else can he do? I think he handles it with class, and then sarcastically gives pranam to the hollering from the audience 'baa-ji kya bhat hai'...
The audience spoiled the soothing and meditative nature of the raga! Also, the recording quality was very very low. What happened to us classical people? Not very happy. :(

shouqie844 Hassanji, I am talking about the gat starting at around 19:40. It seems to be 14 beats. As Mr. Bansal above commented, I do think it is Farodast. First half sounds like ektal, but then adds just one 2 beat avartan to khali to make it 14 beats.
I don't know where this was played. It seems the audience is mostly made up of novices who are easily impressed by the flourishes presented by Zakir Hussain. Zakir Hussain has started acknowledging that his early days of playing as accompanyist were all about his own pride and accolade seeking rather than highlighting the lead instrumentalists' improvisations and ability. Ustad SPK is and has been for a while the best sitarist of India. He deserved more respect from Zakir Hussain.
@@deepranjanghosh1851 I agree with you. While SPK is playing the fixed gat, ZH is having fun, saving the presentation from a monotonous atmosphere. When SPK goes into the taan and gamak pieces ZH is doing his role, keeping the theka of the Taal with precision.
It is quite refreshing to Listen Ada Chautal (over tabla) with a Rag like Malkauns. Mike is too sharp for both Tabla and Sitar........ The crowd is childish..... too loud, they don't seem to know the nuances of attending a classical music concert particularly when such heavenly music is being played ...aah!
Actually, this types of crowd disturbing the concert. Even they are not allowing to listen zakirji's performance smoothly. I think, zakirji also doesn't like this type of audience.
Ustad Zakir Hussain is extremely gifted with deep learning of a very wide range of Vadan Shastra played with tabla but he possibly forgets the very princples of SANGAT and in spite, goes to play JUGALBANDI and I'm pained to say sorry as this sort of accompaniment does not give me the joy I would otherwise could have expected.
Audience bohot had tak samajh vali bethi he yaha, lagbhag harek tihai ko sahi daad di he, agar calculation perfect he tohi mili he dad varna setting vali tihai me nahi di zakirbhai ko
Zakir Hussain's interaction with the audience and the sound recordist was completely unnecessary. It side-tracked Ustad Shahid Parvez and stopped the flow of his Sitar. It is good that he kept his cool and continued to produce his dazzling skills with the instrument. Zakir Sahib may be great but when he is accompanying an artist on the table, he should just do that on not try to take over the stage. This is against the accepted norms and culture of Indian music.
Coward crowd. People who can't understand the nuances and intricacies of Classical music should either refrain themselves from such public consorts or should just try to keep their mouths shut
