This is a REVIEW of the Canon RF 15-35mm f2.8L IS. This is one of the MUST HAVE MIRRORLESS Lens for the Canon EOS R system. Is 15mm wide enough vs 14mm? Is 35mm too long and overlapping of the 24-70mm f2.8L IS? I LOVE what Canon is doing with their RF glass.

I’m getting tired of him pushing Sony they must be paying himvalot
Jared Polin you can lock the control ring so that it's only accessible when you hold down the shutter button. So the only time you could accidentally hit it is when you're taking the photo and due to the EVF you would probably notice the lighting change. I've literally never had a problem with it, so I'm not sure why you hate it.
my wife says you should use more conditioner for your fro
please mr fro, correct the autosubtitles, they are in korean
Answer the real question... Is it time for me to SELL (out) ALL my NIKON gear?
I use command ring as a relaxing feature. It's very relaxing when you know that nothing changes while you turning it.
Lmaoooooooooooooooooooooooo
You got me in the first half!
Lol, that's cool
🤣
tbh I remember finding myself doing that mid shoot a few times hahaha. Completely unconscious ! LOL
I feel like this video has a much higher contrast than typical.
Jared. The control ring is only activated when you half press the shutter. Therefore you can’t accidentally adjust it as you say. At least no more than any other control.
Have to say I wouldn’t be without the control ring. Love it.
Colin Roberts thank you!
I came here just to type this, thank you Colin!
The half press requirement is a setting, I’m guessing Jared has it disabled.
I have it set like this.. either the shutter half press or the AF-ON on the back can activate it and it's pretty nice. I still have the M-fn button customized to be able to change ISO, etc. when im using an adapted lens, but the ISO on the control ring is nice and makes things quite a bit faster. Same with setting my touch bar thing to adjust my kelvin scale since I always use that setting for white balance.. but only activated to slide across and not tapping the left n right.. therefore i don't accidentally press it. love that thing. :)
JonisKanonis hmm probably. Although it was on by default on my rp. Don’t know about the R
that wind tunnel is the proof that this is the most thorough review out there
I bought this lens 2 weeks ago and absolutely LOVE IT! If you’re on the fence, trust me, BUY IT!
I agree. I still wana see a 14-28 2.0!!!
Just got the RF 28-70mm f/2L and now this lens is next on my list. I won't have the issue of confusing the RF 28-70mm f/2 with the RF 15-35 f/2.8L because the RF 28-70 f/2L is so HUGE!
Totally agree with you about the rear lens caps, feels like a step backward compared to the EF rear lens caps.
I have the control ring set to ISO, but it's locked so I have to half press the shutter button for it to change. Works for me!
yep same for me
How do you lock the control ring please?
@@lescphotos in the 4th orange menu under customize dials the control ring dial has a Set ISO speed (hold meter. btn) option. It's the third from the left on the top :)
@@maresonyates6129 Thanks ! :)
Hi Jared I use the Control ring for ISO, and yes , you can accidentally change the ISO, but there is an option that you first have to press the shutter halfway before you can alter the ISO via the ring. This works just fine.
I use the command ring for my ISO settings, I've never accidentally changed the ISO on the fly. I even sometimes forget that it's there.
I don't need to change ISO quickly generally and rather have it not active. That's my personal preference for sure.
Michael, are you able to roll the command ring for ISO past ISO100 to enabled Auto ISO? Because this is my only major annoyance with the touch bar on the EOS R and I would buy the EOS-RF adapter with command ring if it works like that.
For the record, I can program a sliding move to switch between ISO100 and whatever upper limit I select in Fv mode, *but* I can't make it to switch to Auto ISO; for this I have to use the touch screen or reset all values (again, in the context of Fv mode which I find myself using all the time in place of M).
Jared Polin Yeah I agree I rarely change my IOS often, but when I shoot weddings and I need to go from outside to inside it’s really convenient to have my ISO settings on the command ring.
Jared Polin listen to your viewers comments. You can enable it so that the ring only works with the shutter button half depressed. It’s a nice feature, no reason to go back to lenses without it. You’ll eventually figure it out and get on board.
Ivan Arnaudov Yes it does go from 100 to auto ISO so you can activate the auto ISO function from there.
I use the ring as White Balance. Yes, it’s available through the M-Fn button, but it’s a little faster with the ring on the not that frequent occasion it needs changing.
Manual focus is still a thing in 2019 and will remain a thing for a lot of photographers. Just think about astro people. I like to set the aperture on the lens because it is a parameter of the lens so it makes sense to me to set the aperture with the lens customisable ring (just like you would with a manual aperture lens). Then I set the shutter speed on the top dial and the ISO on the rear/top dial (these are parameters of the body). This way, I don't have to spend time in the menu to change exposure settings. The customisable ring is the furthest ring from the body so you can't really touch it inadvertently...
Also almost any videographer use manual in between shots.
I never MF even when shooting astro
@@edrader you should use manual in order to focus in the brightest stat tho..
I focus to either infinity or focus on my foreground subject.. I use a 14mm lens and DOF is very deep
@@edrader hmm good to know !
I set my control ring as an ISO. It works great for me.
Jared, I really like the B&W close-up of Jess. Thanks for the tutorial on telling the photographic story.
The ring is perfect for adjusting the WB while shooting video. 🙂
I use the control ring (EF to RF) on my R6 for Kelvin and I love it, stopped using Auto WB, less to do while editing. It's really nice to see the temp in camera.
100% agreed! same here.,
The shot at 12:17 is dope, can't even see distortion on the face at that focal length!
I always find it odd when people, who come shooting from film origins, say the control ring is a risk factor. When shooting with my Canon F1-N I never had issues accidentally bumping the aperture ring while shooting. Now that I’m shooting with the EOS R, I still don’t have those issues. My main dial is programmed for shutter speed, control ring programmed to aperture, Touch Bar programmed for ISO controls, and quick control dial off.
You can set the command ring so you won’t accidentally touch it. I’m tired of hearing you complain about this feature. It tells me that you haven’t even tried setting this feature. There are two ways of setting up the command ring. Go check it out and then preach about it. It’s annoying hearing you constantly complain about something that has an easy fix supplied by the manufacturer. To the point where I am contemplating unsubscribing. Please read the manual. Otherwise, please keep up the great work. 😕
Agreed 100%, it's annoying when people don't read the options and be quick to claim it's useless for them. if you lazy reading manual, you will always be missing out, Jared. Great work otherwise.
I'm happy to see that the RF lens are passing the sniff test.
The Canon engineers have no doubt been pouring a ton of their effort into making that happen. ;-)
Geez...a lot of haters hanging around, huh? They just gotta make themselves heard...🤦♀️
Well... *I* just wanna say THANK YOU for making this review and for admitting that you *meant* the photo to be at another aperture - but Nikon confusion. I get that. Thanks.
I gotta say...I SOOOOOO want this lens!!! But I have been waiting for a *GOOD* review on it! I LOVE shooting wide! Mostly video, But hey...it works, right?! Thank you for reviewing it under so many conditions.
Cheers!
Jared, the control ring is configured mainly so it only works if you half press the shutter to make adjustments so you need to be a numpty to make those mistakes. ISO and exposure compensation are only the things which you are likely to set it to and if you have the R then its really useful due to the button option on the camera. If you have the R5 to R6 then its not so much an issue as you already have three dials on the camera and an additional one on the lens is more of a bonus. For me the ring is set to exposure compensation with the button half pressed and works brilliantly.
You can configure the control ring on the lens to be active only when you half press the shutter. This way you don't turn it accidentally when taking out of the bag, etc. In addition, there is some customization available for the dials (direction and function).
This, also useful for cameras which don't have dials or too few dials
Thanks for the review. Well done. I've found that in my work, Canon EF 16-35 mm f2.8 L is as wide as I can go before clients freak out.
I love going WIDE myself!!!
For ISO 1600, I noticed too much grain the images ????
Just bought your preset bundle. Firstly, cause I’m color impaired and presets really save my editing. Secondly to say thank you for your videos. I am almost 100% CZcams taught, largely by yours and a few other channels.
Keep up the great work and I’m looking forward to using the presets.
Set the ring to unlocked only when focusing. Such a great feature
For the control ring: you can program it the way that it works only when the shutter button is half pressed if you’re afraid that you change it accidentally.
But even when it’s set to be working “all-time” it still works only when the meeting of the camera is on (which means few seconds after hand pressing the shutter). Unlike Fuji lenses.
Give it a shot:)
We know that, we still don't like it.
Jared Polin thanks for your answer. I was just thinking that it could be misleading to say that you can change it accidentally. In my opinion, the chance is the same as changing your settings with the other controls (dials).
Thanks for your review though, great job!
@@froknowsphoto when will tamron 28-200 and 17-28 go to canon? will it ever?
Dear Jarod, I Love Canon Printers, however, I am staying with Nikon and the Z6 upgrade to my kit. You do an amazing job informing people like me with so much information on what to buy and how to buy it. I can't thank you enough for enabling me to share your works on your website. We actually get to "play" with stuff and your generosity should be applauded. I know; I know it's your gig but it really helps in making those informed discussions. Thanks so much.. pete. You are welcome by my fire anytime if you ever choose to travel that far..
Whatever you use the ring for, choose the setting that enables the shutter as needed press before twisting it.
I wish that the RF-lenses had a camera that could match the awesomeness.
Yeah man, if both Nikon and Canon had good common sense cameras bodies that could rival A7III. It would justify a mirrorless transition to them. I'm lowkey envious of these Canon RF lenses. But those G Masters ain't nuthin to F with either!
What the f are you talking about? These camera bodies are overkill already. What you need to upgrade is your skills.
@@jaezryl sorry, but when you shoot sport/action you need 10fps, at least
Fast forward to now, and you get your wish....
just make a settings before using the control ring is first your have to half press shutter button and then that control ring is activated to changed the ISO, as simple as that
i don't want that. People keep bring this point up and we know this is possible. I have no desire to have it active.
If I had both of those lenses in my bag the least of my worries would be getting them confused. I would be more worried about how I was going to use them without the use of the arm and the leg that they cost me.
Hi just to point out that there is a lock button to stop you accidentally adjusting the front ring or the thumb bar if you want its easy to use
I think the Sony FE 16-35 F2.8 GM Lens is the best mirrorless lens ever XD
the one they just recalled?
In your dreams, dude. We talk here about lenses for cameras, not toys.
Sundaystroller No, just give credits to Canon for such an excellent lens. The GM might be good but the Canon is simply the better lens.
@Sundaystroller Well, all the presented Canon lenses for RF mount were better than what exists on Sony side. No? The RF Mount is simply more powerful than APS-C based E-Mount and Canon obviously is making full use of what the RF Mount can offer.
Sundaystroller The FL is better than the Canon? Ah, I see. You are knowledgeable :) LOL.
The RF Caps - Go to Home Depot and get a roll of red 3M electrical tape. Put a piece on the cap at the point where in lines up with lens. The cost is $3.00. Makes it much easier and faster. You can even get other bright colors if you prefer.
Love that 15mm close up shot!
It's time for me to testify on the control ring.
Personally, I use a lot and I have never activated it by accident.
This is done in such a way that it is far enough from the zoom and quite distinguishable (to the touch) from the focus control (in the rare cases where I use it).
I LOVE that close up shot!
All the California people when you said 1045. 104point5 the hawk!
Seems like canon has a strong line up fo RF system. They just need to come up with a good body upgrade for EOS R.
I think it has become apparent, you were right, Canon is the sleeper. If they get the next EOS R body right, EOS-R will be the system pro sought after.
Another thing I notice, Canon Lens has very good performance against lens flare, nikons are not as good.
nothing wrong with EOS R. it's as good as 5d4
For anyone wondering the IS works great in video - just watched another review on this lens.
A couple of minor points: (1) Landscape photographers frequently use manual focus. Canon's Live View touch screen functionality makes that really easy. (2) Focus distance is measured from the sensor, not from the front element. So yeah, you can get the lens way closer to the subject than the listed focus distance.
If & when Canon upgrades the R, these two lenses will definitely be on my want list, although the RF 24-105 F/4L is sweet too (and available as a kit lens). Decisions, decisions...
Sony: We have the best mirrorless lenses!
Canon: Hold my beer.
Why write 'hold my...'. You sound like an idiot mate.
@@nordic5490 because that's a common running gag, so that's fine. u want a tissue? :))
I think lumix lenica lens are better than Sony also
@@nordic5490 you sound like a out of the times old man, grandpa
666Tomato666 exactly dude was under a rock for quite sometime.
Just ordered this lens the other day! Can’t wait for it to arrive.
Great video, but the shots of Jared talking in the studio seemed a little too contrasty
Totally agree with you about the RF lens cap, the EF cap goes on so much easier.
I thought i was going crazy when i was trying to put my back cap on my RF lens for the first time because i couldn't get the threads to line up!
lol ... both middle fingers up with the poster saying 'free energy' at the back
I had this lens. I sold it because it is so big. Am I regretting selling it, no. Not sure how to replace it. I have the 24-105 f4 L and the 100-500L I am not feeling the need for a wider lens. Images were bloody brilliant from it though.
Can we have a comparison rf 15-35 vs rf 24-70 for vlogging ? Great video btw !!!
I would love to see this too. I would in general love a video discussing the best lens arsenal for video. Peter McKinnon says he almost only uses the 15-35 and an 85 prime shooting on the EOS R. If I could only get 2 lenses would a better pair for the 15-35 be the 24-70 or some prime lense in or slightly above this focal range (like the 85mm)? Use case is 100% video--mostly vlogging w/ hopefully some clean b-roll & studio talking head shots.
As a Sony shooter I prefer the size of the Sony bodies more. But Canon is doing really well with lenses. Having the 2.8+stabilization is really good. Although, the lens is a big more heavy than I'd like to run and gun with. I'm sure optically it is really good.
The way I solve the back cap issue with _any_ lens is by not putting the back caps back on when I'm out shooting. They all come off when I leave the house and they don't go back on until I'm back in the house unless it starts raining or snowing.
I use the control ring for switching between autofocus modes when I'm shooting events. It's far in the front where so I don't have to worry to touch it by accident.
i have this lens and i love love it. but i mostly bought it for video as well.
From the thumbnail I thought you found a... Canon shaped smoking ePipe 🤓😬😂
The lens hood is so large probably because Canon had lots of lens flaring and vinetting when wide open. I learned my lesson with their 16-35 EF lens. It also was not sharp until you stopped it down 2 stops. I sold it and got the 17-40mm F4 lens and couldn't be happier!
Maybe you got a rare bad copy. Mine was stupid sharp at F4...
Hahahha, so cute with your blow out style. You are no ordinary Reviewer. Well done!
Can you repeat This review with the variety of bodies now present and the similar price range matches?
Fantastic work. Thanks for the detailed info! Stay healthy and stay free
Hey Jared, why you guys don't create a line of FroKnowsCaps for RF lenses that do not require to be aligned to fit on the lens?
Love this lens! I have the RF 15-35 2.8L, the EF 85 1.4L, the EF 100 2.8L macro, and will be getting the RF 70-200 2.8L. that should cover all my main lenses. I still have a few other EF lenses but they're really not as useful for me (like my 50 mm 1.8 and 50 mm 1.4, my Tamron 15-30 2.8 II). This RF 15-35 puts my Tamron to shame.
glad that I'm not the only one that struggles with the lens cap lol
With the command ring you can set it so it will only change something when the shutter is have pressed, so your chances of bumping it go way down
CANON is KING! 💪
Thank you, Jared, for the free guide and the FroPack-Bundle!
Also for this (long awaited) review that leads me to WANT this lens so hard (as soon I "want" to afford it)
Because of DailyFro 281 I know you want constructive critique, but I have really none. But I would like watch you using the 15-35 much longer.
Is it compatible to the canon EOS M50?
I wont be going mirrorless anytime soon. I just wanna learn my Canon. I hope you do more videos soon of DSLR.
Thinking of making this 15-35mm lens + 85mm with the new R5 that was recentely announced as my full kit
I was thinking the same for my kit, but would probably swap the 85mm with the 70-200mm.
Aldo Mell that’s what I meant to say 😉
So did u do it? Was it good? I own R5 with 85...
Thinking if i should get this 15-35 or wait for 35 1.2 + 16-35 f4
@@assafz220 I don't take the 15-35 off. 🔥
One good solution to avoid mistakenly to attach wrong lens on the body is actual check which one you are going to attach on the body. Just saying.
Mixed the words Hebrew and Trinity. Love it.
Nope, haven't use the command ring yet... But use the touch bar to on and off eye AF on the right and on off histogram on the left... Finding myself rely too much on the display vs the EVF... Which is great since both have the same focus speed, which is not the case in dslr...
I want this lens but it's so damn expensive it's between saving for this or the new MacBook *big sigh*
darealphantom same, I want both. The new 16” mbp and the RF trinity.
It's pretty insane that this lens costs as much as the 16" MacBook Pro
The new MacBook sucks, get the lens
Google it I actually brought the MacBook and it doesn’t suck
I have my ring set to ISO, just be aware of it, and as a safety I like to assign it to the LOCK button as well, so if you are worried about it you could lock the ring from changing anything. But at that point you would’ve change your ISO already. But anyways, I have it to ISO, and I don’t find myself accidentally changing it
Good Job fro! Like always.
Do a video on lecia sl vs nikon z7
The control ring seems like an interesting idea as an option if you want it.
I haven't used it, but it seems that the control ring on the control ring adaptor might be in a more useful position right next to the mount, I think that could be handy.
Hi Jared, you can set control ring, that it is active just during half-press shutter button. I had same problems. Now I m using this way and it works perfectly. Anyway, I want to change my aperture or ISO, only when I m shooting, so it make sense and it is really handy. I hate that back dial on EOS R. I prefer old, large dial from older Canon bodies. I dunno why they decided to stop using it.
Jared
I was waiting for ur review on this lens,
Great
I always brace myself for Jared mentioning his fro packs, capturing motion in low light, and square space.
Alberto 9324 dudes gotta make that $$$
So much hate on the caps lol. Thank you for putting this video out, I was thinking about getting this lens. I found the information in this video to be extremely helpful. Love the videos, keep putting out great content!
RF Control Ring is best thing ever ... Change my iso on it!
Just rewatching this... that closeup of Jess? Dang.... any closer and she would have left nose smudges on the front element 🤣🤣🤣 but damn it’s a banger of a shot!
The Canon lineup of R glass now and what is on the roadmap for the coming year is a huge reason I'm NOT investing in a new system until Canon comes out with their EOS-ProR. I fully realize it is entirely possible I may be waiting till the spring of 2021 at least. But I feel fairly confident their ProR will not only make up for the mistakes on the R but will of course have IBIS by then, along with a higher rez viewfinder with fast refresh rates and hopefully get more buttons on the body for even better ergonomics. I'm just not in love with the Sony A7 offerings and forget about Nikon. The only body I was smitten with was the Panasonic S series but their lens offerings don't provide a long lens yet anyway. If they improve their DFD still more (as it needs it) I may go that way. But otherwise the Canon ProR may win me over.
That's a ultra super awesome lens, to be able to not even move in the wind tunnel test!😀
The ring is good shooting weddings
I agree I hate the stupid back cap on the first day i got canon RF lens
Would u guys still invest in the Z series? Looking to get into my first full frame camera and the Z6 seems appealing to me due to its great sale
However hearing Nikon is plummeting hard compared to canon and Sony and them being more depending on the camera business, is it too risky at this moment to even buy into their system?
It’s still Nikon they aren’t dire just doing bad.
Jared Polin can you make a video comparing the latest cameras auto focusing system and what situations each type is good for?
Hey, it’s for “old school”. Lol. Sad to sad but I grew up shooting from ‘79 to ‘95, when I stopped until this year. I still have my Olympus OMG-1 and light meter lol. I bought a Canon R and use the control ring as my aperture. I feel at home and would love a second control ring in the back of the lens for my shutter. :) Kids these days are spoiled with that amazing EVF. ;)
I absolutely love this lens! One of the best wide angle lenses for mirrorless.
How are the rf as oppose to adapter + ef lenses?
The rf lenses cost small fortune.
hello! i started out my photography on old minolta and canon film cameras, and whe aperture settings are in a very similar place to the control ring. works quite well for me
Haven't gotten all the vid yet, but I already know I'd love this lens for tight-in work at concerts. The lack of distortion at the edges on super-wide shots would be fan-damn-tastic to have as a tool.
It def is a nice range.
Can someone please tell Jared that you can set the ring to only work when you half press the shutter release button! For those who are scared of changing the settings without knowing.
When canon upgrades bodies with ibs i will upgrade my 1dx mk ii for video work.. love my 1dx but it's heavy as f.
I hated the caps at first also, I can switch caps fairly fast now without issue.
I like the control ring for autofocus mode
Good weather sealing!
Should I get an EOS R and this lens? Or 5DVI?!
Personal choice.
Go with the future
Im getting an R
Jared Polin ok thanks. I’m upgrading from an 80D so I have a couple EF lenses such as the 100-400 IS II F4 and the 50mm 1.8
Noah Bjoin lmk how it is !!
