Yea sadly noone wants to work at a retail store anymore the employees are paid to maintain the store and stock the shelves mainly. Its ok to get a mower at the big box store if its a great deal and you know you got a local dealer nearby that will service it. But the dealer models will be different and typically offer better engine options. For instance I own a husqvarna lawn tractor that I got used from a local dealer (they'll take trade ins and then do the maintenance on them like oil change new belts new plugs new filters etc) then resell them. I got a 46 inch deck tractor about a 2014 model but whats big is it has a 18 hp kawasaki fr600v engine. you can only get kawasakis on lower end tractors from the dealer lowes sells them with briggs engines and they're just not as reliable. So if anything I recommend folks needing riding mowers to check their local small engine shops typically you'll find used tractors and zero turns for like amazing deals I only had to pay $1000 for mine and they'll come to me with a trailer for only $20 and take it if I ever need it to have seasonal maintenance.

Chicanic did a video about this showing what to buy and what to not buy for a lawn tractor at these Big Box stores so yeah check her out she also shows you how to repair small engines and what to use to keep it going and what not to use that will kill your small engine.
