- Well, I got kind of sick of paying for bundles of firewood and decided I would try burning wood stove pellets in a normal wood stove. Turned out ok, I know they sell trays that you can use, but with the coals going it worked out ok. Also fried haddock and beans is going to join the list of camping meals! Friday and back home to see my wife for the weekend! Cheers all.

It's funny to see how Steve's commentary and overall interaction as host has changed from the early videos to his present stuff. He really.came out of his shell and speaks clearly and confidently compared to a few years ago. Cheers.
He was CLEARLY drunk in this video. It’s different than all the other same time videos. He’s got worlds better for sure. But no, this was Drunk Steve. Loud outburst. The eyes. The eyes are the key. Not knocking Steve. I love his channel. But just stating that he was clearly drunk camping.

@@deejay4837 Well I mean, it was pretty tough for Steve back then. He spent 8 weeks at a campsite while going to trade school because he didn't have much extra money for better accommodations. All the added stress on top of the 8-week school program got compounded.

In my country everyone gets kicked out of their cushy office job (Aerospace Industry) at 45 and they have to begin again. I went to local college for a couple of years, got hooked on Botany. Now I'm a professional again at 54.

Steve... I’m really impressed with how you give honest opinion on what works and what doesn’t. This is one of my favorite subscriptions and I don’t even “rough it” that much! Thanks for your experiences.
You can actually buy a pellet burner tube and small hopper that self feeds with gravity. I made my own and it worked so well, I made another one for my wood stove that heats my home. It's much cleaner dealing with bags of pellets than messing with cord wood too. Of course I get my pellets for $3.79/40 lb. bag so it's also cost effective for me. I buy my pellets by the ton now so I have a lot of heat stacked up in the basement now!!

Thanks for the for the pellets. We bought our first bag today at the feed store and have a roaring fire in our stove tonight. One thing to watch out for is that most wood stoves aren’t meant to have the concentrated heat on the floor, which is why the baskets are recommended. We didn’t get a basket either though.
Looks like those pellets are a keeper for future cold weather hot tenting rather than normal fire wood…
Hey Steve, you should get a p38 can opener. They work pretty good! Very cheap and durable and can be carried anywhere. They came with the k-ration meal kits during ww2 FYI... Just thought I"d post this, been watching your vids during this global thing going on now. Love your content too BTW
Just be careful with the pellets. If they really get going they get very hot and may damage your stove by melting some parts.
I had to come back and watch the episodes I started with. This 8 week series is what got me hooked.

my father was a continental chef, and he always heated the pan before putting in most meat. If you cook a steak slow or start it in a slow heating pan, it will be tough. you should cook a steak hot and fast and without a lid.
I love wood pellets. They're the best. If you can get your hands on some newspaper you can wrap the pellets and make wood pellet balls that you can just chuck into the stove. Much better than scooping by far.

Please WASH YOUR CLOTHES WHEREVER YOU SHOWER , MUCH EASIER THAN THE WHOLE SNOW MELTING, JUST BRING A PLASTIC BAG WITH YOU FOR THE WET CLOTHES TO BRING BAG BACK AND DRY IN THE TENT. !! THE PELLETS SAY NOT FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION SO IT'S MAYBE NOT SAFE TO COOK ON IT'S COALS !!! THANKS FOR THE VIDEO !! LOVE IT !!!

Interesting re. the pellets! I did not know in Alberta you can't just chop up wood for free, and had to buy it! Now we will all know that when you are able to chop up free wood, you are filming from my province of BC :) We take it for granted here when camping that we can round up some wood while camping, although we do have wood for sale at gas stations and some campsites. I feel fortunate we never had to use pellets while camping or in our woodstove at home.
When your out and about keep an eye out for a cheap sheet pan to place under your stove, it would reflect some heat up (especially with the pellets sitting on on belly of the stove) I've also heard of people putting sand or tiles inside on the bottom of the stove to protect the bottom?
Bring a load of firewood if you can. I love what you are doing. When I retire the first thing I am going to do is camp for a month in a tent. Won’t be in cold Canada though. 🌨🌨❄️☃️🌬💨 Brrrr!! Good job.
Steve you should think about getting a Swiss Army knife. Depending on what type you buy you could have a saw, bottle opener, can opener, knives and maybe a fork. Plus it could be on you so it could help you out.
I know yhis is crazy old, but pellets mixed with corn, and oyster shells are an amazing combo. More even heat, good cutting agent for pellets and the oyster shells help creostote build up and also aerate the mix
4 fish filets and a can of beans. Thats hella food. A feast indeed... And dinner rolls. Delicious. Enjoy... Steve's like a bear. Stores the feast of fish as fat for lean times, such as those long days at trade school. Love ya' Steve...
That fish looked so good!! And I'm glad you tried the pellets , sounded way more economically sound. Looks like week 1 went well.
Also, Walmart sells pine chips in a large bag on the pet aisle for animal cages and that's very cheap.

I got to say Steve I admire what you are trying to accomplish. Going to trade school is hard enough from home, let alone in your situation. I remember my time 20 years ago and I got to say you got guts man. Just a few tips here on the wood and washing setup. You probably thought of this but I use to go to the carpentry shop in school and scrounge wood ends there. Also I would go to building supply stores and build sites around town and get broken/cut pieces of lumber for fuel. As so much for washing, the best thing I ever saw for in the bush was a electric cement mixer from crappy tire for 99 bucks. Keep up the studies and don't let the bastards grind you down. Peace brother.....O you know when someone can cook when they make a meal like that in a tent on a wood stove. yum yum.

8 weeks will be a challenge for sure. Good job. I have the same stove, just with a baffle I had welded in. How did the pellets perform compared to wood? I have used mostly mix of softwood/Jackpine and some hardwood, can get 3 hours of good heat out of stove through the night.

I think the key to effectively burn the pellets is to keep them right up front directly in front of the draft as you did.

I misread the title and thought you said pallets. You can quite often get pallets for free in the states in urban areas from various factories and such. I can get them for free out here in the Arizona desert from the pipe plant out out here as many as I can carry. Makes for great firewood for heating in the winter. I'd figure in Canada the same would be true. To hell with paying out the ass for the bundled firewood.

Nice info! Been doing this for sometime, a pressed logs and charcoal, it's best to haul once than have to search and haul, I combo with propane burner, it's huge wood gathering issues
Never heard it called frito pie. We always called it a walking taco. They used to serve it at school for lunch when I was a kid. But I knew exactly what you were talking about when you said frito pie lol
That fish looked amazing! Just gotta say you have beautiful eyes! Last random statement, where are your leafy greens? Eight weeks is a long time for meat and beans. Be sure to get some spinach. Tasty with just butter and salt.

Way too late to comment (and someone may already have) but with the pellets I would assume it is similar to a wood stove where you don't want anything burning under the rods that allows air to get under as it will heat up the rods too much and make them melt. I think that is the reason why a pan is available

Wondering what you have to do for washing up cooking dishes/utensils? Just heat more water, I guess? I've never camped somewhere cold that didn't have a clean and unlimited (although you have to fetch it) water supply.
If the tent laundry isn't cutting it, do some washing at school in the showers!

Those pellets are likely made from saw dust - a waste, compressed into pellets. So instead of paying to get this stuff taken away like trash, they actually make money selling it. Win win I guess as long as they don't rip us off.
Check kijij. There's always someone getting rid of old trees and pallets. I see people picking up pallets around YEG all the time. Just cook over it.
Have a pellot stove in my house and was very pricy and miss the old regular fire place
