      I once asked a Japanese man how to pronounce the characters in the game's title, and iirc he responded with something like "taisho". So, not "Daikatana"? No, it isn't pronounced like that he said categorically. When a game tries to differentiate itself using a foreign language and they never even bother to ask someone who understands the language if they're pronouncing it correctly that gives you an idea of the level of commitement from the developers.

      Pretty sure sure there is no such a word as daikatana in Japanese
      大 is indeed read as dai when connected to another word (which is a Chinese reading, native Japanese word for "big" is 大き, ōki), and 刀 is indeed read as katana (which is a native Japanese word)
      Except
      1. while making one word by slapping together a Chinese and Japanese reading of two signs isn't unheard of in Japanese, it's not exactly standard either. Presumably two Chinese reasings of these sings would be daitō, and two Japanese ones - ō(ki)gatana
      2. Katana would become -gatana when connected to a preceding word, compare Uchigatana
      3. The only actual 大刀 word I can find that isn't made up is Tachi, which is indeed a Big Katana or a chinese Guandao, but obv isn't read Daikatana
      tl;dr John Romero did a Typical Seppo and smashed two words he recognised in Japanese together without wondering if that even makes sense
      It's about the same level of awareness of other languages as making a Russian character called Ivan Ivanovich Ivanovsky bcs u can't be arsed to check for literally any not-stupid Russian name and use that instead

      It was actually Romero's terrible game design decisions, specifically his refusal to be restricted by technical limitations, his insistence on hiring inexperienced, straight-out-of-college staff and unreliable modding teams to compose the majority of the Ion Storm Dallas staff (Ion Storm's secondary studio in Austin for the sake of comparison, was composed of experienced former employees of both Origin Software, who were also based in Austin at the time and most of them left due to EA's mismanagement and hostile takeover of the developer after EA deliberately sued them on Trip Hawkins' behalf, and Looking Glass Software, namely the people who moved back south from Massachusetts after 1998) and his habit of overpromoting himself and his actual technical capabilities (Carmack had the technical skill, McGee and Petersen had the level design wizardry, and Ion Storm lacked all three men's capable hands to save Romero's arse). Romero's insistence on using the newest engines rather than iterating what they had didn't help things, as they spent 1 and a half years trying to build everything from scratch for Id-Tech 2.
      Why? Because nothing could be reused and ported over from the original Id-Tech 1/Quake 1 engine prototype from 1997.
      The primary Dallas studio was also spread thin between two games, Romero's Daikatana/"Big-Big Sword"(Katana just means "Big-Sword" so adding in the redundant "Dai" prefix leads to this comical actual translation) and Tom Hall's Anachronox. Both games suffered due to the dev spread and tech debt that swiftly followed.

    Luckily John Romero made the source code of this game available and that brought us the unofficial 1.3 patch that fixes majority of the issues, improves the sidekick AI and makes em immortal, including the option to play without them, also the reason why loading times are long is due to VSync, turn it off and it'll load much faster.
    For those who wanna play it here's some small hints Invest your skill points on Power and Vitality only, stuff like Acro is only used for finding secret areas but you will find a powerup that temporarily maxes it out and are normally closer to the mentioned secret area you need. The speed is just useless once you learn strafe jumping ( it has a very satisfying strafe jump mechanic btw), ya could spend points on Attack to increase the fire rate of your weapons and finally, you can max out the Daikatana sword right in ancient Greece which has it's own stats but god damn is it OP when it's maxed out.

Unfortunately they didn't really change the design of the game as a whole from the Wii and only made it so that there's no motion controls. Even then the game has no challenge whatsoever, even for the original Wii release. They could've made it so that there were no barriers in the remaster to resemble *some* challenge, maybe even make the stages smaller to compensate for the lack of motion controls (not that that's a bad thing). But nope, they decided to keep the game as is and just make pretty HD graphics. None of this would be a big deal as people thought it was just something Sega wanted to do for fun and to peak interest for either a remaster of the first 2 games or a new Monkey Ball game! sooo.,..what i got from this is that somehow Bethesda got the source code of the npc's AI of Daikatana and pasted it in on Elder Scrolls, then removed the dependency of the npc death effecting you and never touched it again

      LOL good similarity. I never figured out how to even give the NPCs weapons in Skyrim, and they kept dying in the very first dungeon, blindly running into that slamming wall trap.

    Interesting tidbit: many of the ideas in this game (the magic weapon, rpg elements, traveling through time and space) were all ideas for the original Quake. However the development went with Carmack's technology rather than the original idea and this was the result after Romero left. There was high hope for this... I mean Romero essentially made the video game equivalent if Thriller at the time.

    • @jervey123
      @jervey123 Před měsícem

      john romero was the ideas guy, while john carmack was the guy that makes it happen, if the guy that makes it happen says the idea's not happening, the idea's not happening... i feel like daikatana ultimately failed because nobody was there to say no to john romero

    As someone who's learning Japanese, you would NEVER pronounce that combination of kanji (Chinese characters used in Japanese) as "daikatana." Every kanji has at least one on (pronounced "own") reading based on how the character is pronounced in Chinese and typically used when a word is made of multiple kanji, and possibly one or more kun (pronounced "koon") readings usually used when the kanji is by itself. Sure, there are exceptions, but for the most part, on and kun readings don't mix. The problem here is that the title is written 大刀, but they used the on reading for 大 (on: dai, kun: ō, means big) and the kun reading for 刀 (on: tō, kun: katana or gatana) instead of keeping it consistent and calling it something like Daitō, Ōkatana or Ōgatana.

      The way I understand how Japanese works (which isn’t much) is that some letters change when words get smooshed together. For example, “kuma” means “”bear,” but if you wanted to say “big bear,” you would say “ōguma.” Likewise, “hachi” can mean “bee,” but the Asian Giant Hornet is called “suzumebachi” (literally: “sparrow bee.”).

    Literally I'm surprised that big rigs hasn't been featured on this channel.
    Big rigs is literally one of the worst games ever made and doesn't even be considered a game.
    And here we go another horrible game with really bad graphics and I really like how that other guy just got instantly killed by ninja's than came out of nowhere.

      I'm not really sure how you could make a video like this on a game which has such little content to be fair. I mean at least these games have something resembling a story and levels. Big Rigs is just you doing a lap and "YOU'RE WINNER!" lol.

    • @TearD6
      @TearD6 Před 4 lety +2

    The Wizard boss is Tim the Enchanter! I remember looking forward to playing this game when it was released. I was actually going to hire it from the video store, to test it out first and see if I liked it. Upon hiring however, I took it home only to find that the disc was not only scratched, but it was snapped entirely in half! I was bummed, but now I realise I dodged a bullet, lol.

    The 2 swords thing is a thing from ancient Japan. You’d forge 2 swords on an order, put your name on the one that’s better and sell that to the customer where the other gets sold cheaper without the smiths name.
    So it’s trying to say the 2 swords were forged together, likely the main character syndrome means our player gets the named one.
