One big rule I've set for myself is no big houseplant purchases in the winter. They have a harder time acclimating and I'm always happier with their first year health if I wait until Spring.
A rule I subscribe to is if I have a history of struggling with that genus. I almost bought an adorable watermelon peperomia gold dust the other day and then put it back bc I do NOT do well with peperomia for whatever reason, unless I put them in a terrarium. As cute as it was I knew I was probably going to end up killing it, so back on the shelf it went!
I’ll walk away from a plant if I know it won’t do well within my time/care regime. I really want a cerestis mirabilis but after looking up care conditions, I knew it would die within a week lol. Also I’ll walk away from a plant if I don’t like the mature form of that plant.
to add on to the thought of not buying a plant the first time you see it bc you feel like you'll never get another opportunity- I've learned that if I'm spending a decent amount of money on a plant I need to make sure I'm in love with the particular specimen, not just the species in general. Always makes me enjoy the plant so much more and feel like I invested my money in something that was worth it💚
The first one happened to me with my Thai constellations.. I bought two online from different shops because I didn’t think anywhere local had them, and then one of the local plant shops I recently learned about, posted they got them for way cheaper than what I paid for both of mine. I was so sad lol I love the ones I have, but if I had waited, I would have saved a lot
I also think being flexible with partners/families needs is important to consider. Like we have 8 kids-4 still at home almost 4 grandkids and 4 dogs- their needs for my attention time finances and space in my house should be first. I pretty much have to stay around 50 so my husbands needs for a cleaner look and my families needs to run and play and be kids is honored as welll.
Becca, I don't want to should on you so I'm going to highly suggest 😂 that you use superthrive with every watering when watering the monstera albo. Had a friends white parts brown all the time and when I told him to give some sort of nutrients every watering like superthrive he saved all future leaves 🎉
I think for me it’s a time thing. If I don’t have time to wash it and do pest prevention and repotting like close the on the time after I buy it than I don’t
yes, gotta trust the gut. I always get into trouble when I ignore it :T
All guilty,but I don’t anymore,good tips👍for new planting people,
💚🌵🌱☘️💚
Great advice Becca!!! Blessings from Puerto Rico!!! 🪴🙋🏼♀️🌿💚🐩
I bought a ficus tineke and only just realized there were spider mites. Fortunately it wasn't touching any other plants, but I still did a whole diatomaceous earth cleanse after spraying it down since there are several plants fairly close.
My husband would agree ( insert evil laugh) !
😂😂😂
With the pest I would not only check that plant but the ones close to it because sometimes you get a surprise
Good tip!!
Love ❤
I've learned to buy what I can actually grow, I have spent hundreds of dollars on tropical plants, I just look now and just touch and say,, she so pretty, but you know you can't grow it🤣😂, I want many more, but I don't have the time to really care for them, I have 12 and it's alot of work for me 🤷🤷
❤
🥰
I keep trying to purchase De La Tanks and it always says online orders wont work? Do you have any idea why
🌿💚
hello friend
I think my #5 is that you really can't afford another plant. Besides the cost of purchase, you have an investment not only in money but time, emotional investment, plant nourishment, watering, etc. It's like having a child. They are totally dependent on you. Sometimes, while out, I will make a purchase without seeing the big picture, especially space and light. Ugh 😏
I won’t buy a plant, because I’m needing to be considerate of my spouse. If I hear sighs or comments that are suggesting that I have too many plants. I need to remember that it’s their home too. Lately, if I want a better loved plant, I should give a plant away that’s no longer giving me joy.
How dare you give me valid reasons to not buy more plants
If it seems to big to be true walk away
6th reason could be if it is a super high maintenance plant and you are a novice, maybe don’t buy it.
