Such a beautiful tune. I believe he said he wrote this from the perspective of his grandfather singing about his grandmother, which makes sense when you listen to the lyrics. So much love in this song
Old time DMB fan! Never heard this before i was searching for Mother/son dance at my wedding.... It's perfect for us. I lost my sister 9yrs ago and Dave has been alongside every moment of need. Thanks for downloading this
I know this comment is like 3 years later, but this was the song I danced to with my mom at my wedding, and I had lost my sister about one year before that. We were gonna dance to 'sister' but I thought it would've been way too sad, for obvious reasons, as she had lost her daughter and I my sister. Anyway, hope to see you at a show or something. Enjoy life and be kind to one another.
when I first heard this song, this sound was so familiar. I mean as if I heard this song some time in the past (deja vu?). I honestly believed that Dave Matthews performs a cover of some old hit, but noo ^^ It's new. And it's magical.
There's literally nothing and you can say bad about this performance and so honest and there's a lot of songwriters and singers that are honest and guess what did Mathews you can expect honesty and he's not afraid to show it he's a goofball I love that guy 😂
:):):):):):) DAMN, luv luv luv u dave matthews, the world is abetter place thanks to ur talent, life is so much better/easier, with this bliss i luv u o so well
@SmithhausCraftworks This song is actually about his grandfather. If you listen to Live @ Radio City Music Hall he spends a fair amount of time explaining that it's about his grandfather and his experience in WWII.
@TheNebakanezer have at it:) If it helps your song to feel more complete, then I'm glad to be of use:) And yes, life sure can suck at times, sticking you in a crazy glue-like muck. Dave wrote this song for his sister who passed away. They were extremely close. That's why he still plays Oh at nearly every show, to honor her; talk about flawless love:)
@SmithhausCraftworks or you could just tune to raised B... most of his songs are written in it to work better with his range vocally. May need to deconstruct a few chords if you dont want to tune back and forth so much, just play em with the chord's notes transposed to that note's closest new location. Will look funky but confuses the hell out of folks who try to watch and learn without all the music background needed to adapt and recognize chord shape patterns and the tunings they work within.
one could also set their effects processor to shift it up the 14 semitones or so that a 7th fret capo would produce, then just play it like it was tuned differently. Youd need some good noise-canceling headphones with an acoustic guitar though, so you dont hear the god awful racket youll make in the booth, lol! May wanna use a good, dense electric that doesnt vibrate through the body much, then put on the headphones to hear it in tune:) Just an idea...
To be honest I don't think he even knows what his songs are about half of the time.. Sure he may have thought about his grandfather but theres probably some other influences that play a big part in the song.
"Enough to fill up heaven, overflow and fill hell." Genius at work.
Such a beautiful tune. I believe he said he wrote this from the perspective of his grandfather singing about his grandmother, which makes sense when you listen to the lyrics. So much love in this song
I really hope Dave does more solo records, Some Devil is a masterpiece
Ditto..
So underrated
This is just one of those songs that moves me every time I hear it. ....And so I play it as my warm up song on guitar every day.
DMB = my comfort music.. amazing artist..
I love the picking! And the repetition NEVER gets old!
Thank you, Dave Matthews, for helping the silence roar just a little less loudly, if only for a moment...
Beautiful

Woke up to find out a friend's wife passed away this morning....then this song started playing in my mind
The quality of the sound is really poor but oh how beautiful he performs. Makes me so happy.
I fucking love him.
on one of his cds, he actually says this song is about his grandpa not the sister :)
He says it also when he plays live at Radio City with Tim Reynolds :)

Need a love button.
Wow

Wheres the undistorted version?
@bmeeroberts this is correct.
I dont understand how swearing in the comments section helps to express your admiration for this song? It's such a nice a song......
what guitar is he playing?

I thought he said "like a kid likes candy and French toast" the first time I heard this song. lol
