Love that series, which I watch over and over again. Beautiful home, what a challenge to care for such a large estate. I hope to visit some day. My mother loved the series and I was the only one of her three daughters who watched the series. When she had dementia, I would put a dvd in for her to watch and enjoy. Sweet memories of sharing that time with my mother before she passed.

A lovely report. The Earl and Countess are both, in the words of Tom Branson, "Beasts of Burden". Being custodians of a home, a building, like Highclere is a massive responsibility as well as a duty. Still, Downton has shown the world a taste of what life was like in those great houses at that time. I truly hope that at some point in time we get to the late 40s or early 50s, and compare how Julian Fellowes deals with the same era and situation that prompted Evelyn Waugh to pen Brideshead Revisited. At that point in time it appeared that all of the great estates would be broken up and all the great houses lost thanks to the ruinous death duties that had to be paid during and after both World Wars. In the space of 6 years there could easily have been four or even more lots of death duties to be paid, with insufficient time between to do any estate planning or to restock the coffers.

It's criminal that this has a scant few comments. Wonderful job as always, Sir Quest.

I was hoping he would ask about the Blank stone shields above the fireplace in the Great Hall.

They’re not landed gentry, they’re nobility. Landed gentry had the same standard of living as the nobility, often better, but they lacked the title and they never sat in the House of Lords, think Mr. Darcy in Pride and Prejudice, he’s not called Lord Darcy, just mister. That’s the landed gentry, in between the nobility and the middle class.
