- “Where do I go to find the meaning of existence and the meaning of life? For me, that’s Christianity.” -Martin Scorsese, writer and director
Academy Award winning director Martin Scorsese discusses faith, suffering, and more after a screening of his new film “Silence,” the powerful story of Jesuit missionaries in 17th-century Japan. Scorsese reflected on the film and on Christian faith with Fuller Seminary’s Kutter Callaway, assistant professor of theology and culture, and Mako Fujimura, director of the Brehm Center.
The screening was sponsored by Reel Spirituality, an initiative of the Brehm Center for Worship, Theology, and the Arts. Learn more about Reel Spirituality here: www.brehmcenter...

As a film lover and a person with a religious background absolutely cannot wait to see this film. I'm expecting something both intelligent and moving.
Marshall Zane you will not be dissappointed. It is challenging in a healthy way
lglp3 I just watched the film and I must say that the more I think about it the more I discover. Powerful film.
Mr. Scorsese is such a legend. I could listen to him talk for hours.
@drazulao
I find his accent or voice quick-witted. Always gets his hook onto me.
Agreed.Scorsese is a true master of cinema. Could listen to him and William Friedkin for hours. Masters of their craft.
Scorsese only has so many films left in his career considering they are all 2 or 3 years apart. Hopefully his best is yet to come!
"A man who gives up his faith in order to gain his faith"... wow
"Who's brave enough to leave christianity in order to follow Jesus?"
Top 10 movie of all time. Awesome movie. Thank you Martin.
@Shaun Wilson
YEEEEEEESSSSSS!!!!!! Was hoping to read comment like yours.
the way martin weathered the entire christianity to compassion and love is incredible. that's the essence and the truth of christianity. all other politics,sects,traditions pertaining to christianity are irrelevant.
like john the evangelist said, love one another. that's the core of christianity and that's the true message of jesus. i consider martin scorsese to be the purest christian i have ever known.
He is purer than most Christian pastors out there.
Silence is one of my favorite religious movies(2nd to The Apostle). I tried to recommend it to someone at my church but she refused to see a movie where people would be tortured and renounce their Christian faith.
This is also probably why the box office was pretty poor on this movie. The people who SHOULD see this movie are most likely the ones who would rather see God's Not Dead. It's of ironic that those who believe that there is so much persecution here(I was guilty of that admittedly) don't want to see a movie where REAL persecution occurs.
I wish Scorsese made more Christian movies aside from this and The Last Temptation of Christ, they are my top 2 favorite movies of his. :)
Note: In his 2nd review of Temptation, Roger Ebert mentions that he met with Martin after one of his divorces and he said that he is living in sin and will go to Hell for it. I hope he doesn't think that anymore. He seems to have more faith and dedication to Jesus more than most people in Hollywood.
PS: A Christian speaker that I admire, Skye Jethani, has said that this is the best Christian movie, period.
so amazing... a legend talking about his craft and faith
Very insightful. Can't wait to see the film!
Who is the film theorist who is named at the beginning of the video? The autogenerated subtitles says Mikkel Xian but I think it's not that.
Michel Chion is the French film theorist quoted.
👏👏
I appreciate the sincerity with which he speaks, but as a dedicated believer I don’t buy the notion that you can relinquish your faith to gain it. Could you not liken this with the temptation of Christ in the wilderness? Where Christ is offered the entire world should He relinquish His own soul, and Christ rebukes Satan for it? I’ve always taken that to mean that the value of one soul is worth more than every vessel on earth.
Both portray something unreal.
