  • Winged blood collection (butterfly) sets are lightweight, maneuverable, and allow for a lower angle of insertion when performing a venipuncture. But butterflies should not be used on every patient. In this video, we demonstrates the proper technique for drawing blood by venipuncture using a winged-blood collection (butterfly) set.

    She was doing fine until she was leaning over for materials. DO NOT LEAN OVER for anything. Make sure your dominant hand is ALWAYS on the needles for drawing while your other hand is for grabbing stuff from your side where your other hand is. DO NOT LEAN OVER FOR ANYTHING. *PREPARE EVERYTHING FIRST BEFORE YOU DRAW*

    Hello and GM I am a CPT I work with geriatric, adolescent and all other PT's at a neighborhood PSC and wanted to know if you thought a 21g butterfly needle was to big for a dorsal hand draw in certain situations ? I recently had a PT present for a lab only visit no veins in the anti cubital region were cooperating so I moved to the hand where I found nice size veins which I believed would supported the needle set, I chose the gauge because I needed to fill 5 tubes and 23 and 25 gauges tend to clot especially with dorsal hand venipunctures would you agree with my synapses or would you have chosen a different gauge?

      make sure you’re drinking plenty of water, that always makes a huge difference! also, if your phlebotomist uses a heat pack or a glove filled with hot water it will make your veins pop out, even the small difficult ones.

    Hi! I am a first year medtech student and I have a question. In butterfly method, why is it important to “breath” the syringe prior to use? What will happen if the plunger is not pushed all the way in before using it?

    • @HelgatheHorriblez
      @HelgatheHorriblez Před 2 lety +2

      I’ve only ever heard of breathing an injection not a venipuncture butterfly collection set. When giving injections drawing back on the syringe ensures you’re not accidentally administering the injection into a blood vessel with it’s supposed to be administered subcutaneously or intermuscularly. I would not do that if using a butterfly since there’s no plunger on a typical butterfly collection set. In cases where there is one- it maybe to avoid an accidental embolism. I’d have to see the collection set to understand what you mean.

      I prime my syringe beforehand, as it is then easier to gently pull/slid out. If using the butterfly & syringe method, you would use a discard tube on (for example) a citrate tube or a set of quantiferon gold tubes because this is a measured amount of vacuum. If the discard tube is not used with a butterfly (with or without a syringe) then it will not fill to the correct level and will not be tested, as the results would be inaccurate.
