    Is it me... Or from what I am hearing, cant all of these sound and voicing differences be addressed with software updates or firmware updates... After all I don't think the hardware is that much different and we are actually talking about a software driven amp with voicing differences... Its not static like a tube amp.. With tube amps... Unless you mod it in a shop what you hear is what you get... But katanas are all predominantly firmware driven... On another note.. I have an artist mk2 head and it sounds way different than the tones you are dialing in... Its like night and day... This is not a criticism it's an observation... That being said I'll wait for the gen 3 artist head to really compare... But a tool is only as the person welding it... Everyone has a different approach to dialing in a tone... Thank you for the comparison.

    The first time I heard the Gen 3, it got my attention. First note, first chord; this is different. And better. Every sample I've heard since confirms that. I am tempted to try one, but having to buy a Bluetooth adapter, not including a tuner in the app and not including the "bloom" circuit in the 100w combo just pisses me off. Sorry 😊

      The head has it. I had a 100-watt mki combo and now have the mkii head. The built-in speaker is a game changer. It sounds great and is loud enough for 95% of what I do. I have a 2x12 cab but rarely need it.

    This addresses something I have always criticized of Boss/Roland products which is that the base tone of many of their products tend to be far brighter than what is usable. While it is posible to dial out the harshness out of the older katanas it is nice that the starting point for this is already something that sounds good.
    My only point of objection is that I wish they had made it so it was possible to have a stereo out for live playing while monitoring yourself through the amp’s speaker.
    Thanks for sharing the video, it really sounds better.

    Gen 3, to my ears just sounds like the Mk2 with the typical, High end cut we put on the Mk2 Global EQ, a little less upper mid-range, and a slight bit more compression. It's the latter that gives the Gen3 the appearance of being louder, as there is less difference between lighter and heavier picking, as compression will do. You say it is more dynamic, but to my ears, the Gen3 is anything but. Some people prefer that. Gen 3 does sound more like the Catalyst now.

    They dialed out the shrill on the Gen3.

    Yikes. On my Kat MKII artist head, I'm always doing everything I can to brighten it to cut through the band with a 212V30s. I have to use variant 2, cab res, and tone shape and the treble way up not to mention the presence to cut through the mix. Why would you want the guitar signal so deep and "round"? That's what the Bass and keys are for. Goodness.
    This Gen 3 is clearly aimed ONLY at the bedroom player, not someone who plans to play with a band.
    If people are experiencing "digital harshness" on the high end, it's because of the speakers in the combo. Even the "artist" uses a greenback knock off which will accentuate that. When paired with a V30 though, it's a different story.

    • @JucaNeryGuitar
      @JucaNeryGuitar  Před 2 měsíci

      That has absolutely nothing to do with the amp. That’s your speaker. Change the speaker.

    • @iancurrie8844
      @iancurrie8844 Před 2 měsíci +3

      @@JucaNeryGuitar yeah sorry the v30 is the most widely used speaker in the world. If the head cannot work with it…it’s the amp’s fault. Any other head works just fine without all the need for this.
      It should be noted that the artist combo has a greenback knockoff which suffers from the same problem. I guess someone should tell boss to change their speaker…
      Anyway, I think the point is being missed.
      Boss is tuning the gen 3 in the direction of sounding pleasant for a bedroom player. That’s the type of person who wants a “full tone” because they’re not playing with an ensemble. The gen 3 has moved away from being able to easily cut through a mix.
      That’s fine but people need to understand that gen 3 is not for use in a band. It’s a practice amp.

      @@iancurrie8844 Have you tried it already? And you probably know that you can sculpt your tone. I have a 2x12 cab with V30s, there's no lack of high end with the MKII. On the contrary. Bedroom player? Come on man, that implies that the MKII is also bedroom player. I've tried the Gen 3 100 watt loud enough and next to the MKII 100 to listen to a more mature tone on the Gen 3. And believe me, it cuts through the mix very easily. And once again, if in your case it doesn't cut enough, try a different speaker.

    I'll be honest. I see this as a huge cash grab by Boss. With the exception of the new Pushed voice, the re-voicing of amp voices could easily have been done with a firmware update. But then, that wouldn't allow for a cash grab. Heck even the new Pushed could be firmware added, just only available via the app, and thus in presets. As I mention, in a post below, Gen 3 sounds like what most of us Globally EQed our Mk2 to sound like, with more built-in compression on the Gen 3.

    I gigged a Katana212 MKI for years as a pedal platform and was always happy with my clean tone. The MKII is definitely brighter and sounds slightly different. For my purposes I prefer the MKI but im sure you could achieve much better tone with Tone Studio.

    2 questions……
    1. How do YOU break in the speaker on a new Katana?
    2. Who makes the speaker for the Gen 3 100?

  • @kalaharithorn
    @kalaharithorn Před 2 měsíci

    Are you comparing the 100W models? If so, the differences between MKII 100 and the new Gen 3 100 remind me of the ones I heard between the MkII 50 and MkII 100, meaning one sounds meaner perhaps, and the other sounds fuller. But anyway, just first thoughts. Thanks for the video!

      That thought made me wonder how the sound of the 100 MkII compares to the 50 Gen 3. Just a thought, in case we could perhaps hear that comparison if at all possible. Cheers!
