    A Dollar General Tractor Trailer decided to drive on the Merritt Parkway today. Even made it under a bridge before being stopped by state police.

It’s bad enough in a car, but that’s a mistake that a truck driver just can’t afford to make. Especially with the low bridges on Rte 15. I live in this area where this occurs on a regular basis. Part of the reason is GPS' but also the Merritt (route 15) Parkway is a fork at the south end of Interstate 684 and it appears as an alternative to Interstate 95 north. I'm not making excuses, but mistakes happen. At least this fellow had the sense not to crash into the bridge. Although the trucker made a mistake, he had way more sense than that idiot in the SUV trying to pass him on the right shoulder-an illegal move in its own right, not to mention stupid.

  • @rupe53
    @rupe53 Před 7 lety +83

    Just a little history lesson for everyone yelling about parkways. They were mostly designed in the 20s and built in the 30s to help reduce traffic issues in the city areas. Here in Ct the turnpike (Rt 95) wasn't built until the mid 50s and trucks were using the Old Post Road (Rt 1) to deliver goods, which clogged everything up once cars became more popular. IOW, the popularity of cars prompted building of a road to get cars away from city districts. I suspect this is very similar to the thinking in NY / NJ at the time. Once they realized that a limited access road was a good idea and the parkways were already full to capacity they built other roads on a larger scale to help the trucks. Of course most of that was done after WWII as RR traffic started to wane in favor of more trucks. BTW, the Merritt Parkway was constructed heavy enough to support military traffic (many armories along the route) in case of an emergency, but in that era the trucks were not as large as they are today.

But on the other had it's that many less cars and traffic cutting big trucks off on the highway to try and make an exit. No way to do a study to see how many life's saved and accidents prevented.

    • @wheelholder12
      @wheelholder12 Před 7 lety +7

      122011jan I can't agree with you more but as a truck driver I can say this , Around 0500 to 0530 every morning the traffic starts to get heavy but from midnight till then the truck drivers are out there gettin the job done but as soon as those darn four wheelers start coming out of the wood work thats when the traffic jams start . I drive to and from the same place every day and I usually return from where I deliver around said time.It takes me and hour and forty five minutes to get there and sometime two hours to return because of all the cars clogging the roadway not the trucks because just about the same amount of trucks are there on the return as there were on the way out.If you want to compare accidents and cutting other vehicles off it is the fault of ALL those dang cars out there in a hurry to go no where .

    • @NewYorkRawVideos
      @NewYorkRawVideos Před 7 lety +7

      robert moses built all these parkways, so he can get people out into the long island beaches that he built. he intentionally built those bridges low to prevent buses from using the parkway. the only people who rode buses were those who didn't own cars, i.e., poor people, poor BLACK people traveling to white only beaches.

    • @rupe53
      @rupe53 Před 7 lety +3

      Bobby Moses only had a hand in the parkways on Long Island, some of which were built to allow people traveling to and from the city before the LI RR became a commuter line. Out there the problem was the same with trucks needing to use Sunrise Highway to handle goods and cars were clogging up main roads locally. Bring in some parkways and you relieve the congestion. OTOH, the old saying goes "build it and they will come" which means the more roads you have the more vehicles will go that way. It took another 30 years for the LI "distressway" to be built and then that created another issue. Bottom line is he didn't build the bridges low to keep the buses away because buses and trucks were smaller back then anyway. Besides, in that era (pre WWII) the RR still handled the majority of long-haul freight so trucks were mostly for local delivery and didn't need a fancy highway.

  • @danielcourtney1481
    @danielcourtney1481 Před 4 lety +4

    For all the folks wondering about how a 13'6 trailer could clear a bridge with a listed 12' height: look at the shape of the underside of the bridge. It's an arch, not a straight line. So yeah, if you're driving in either lane, the maximum clearance is 12', because that's the height at the outside edge of either lane. Straddling the line like this driver does, though, puts the truck under the highest point of the arch and gives a little more overhead clearance. Just enough, in this case.

      Some major accident or truck gets stuck under a bridge, which doesn't happen very often, can stop up the road for 2 or 3 hours.
      He took a shot and he would have made it if the guy got stuck.
      As it was the truck went through smooth so for the SUV it looked like a bonehead move.
      Personally from my experience I could see what he was trying to do

    If I'm not mistaken, commercial vehicles are not allowed on the Merritt, even a standard commercial work van.
    This is one very good reason.

  • @sideshowbob
    @sideshowbob Před 3 lety +1

    I drive the Merritt all the time & see so many violators - rarely big rigs but tons of commercial vehicles - step vans, smaller box trucks, pickup trucks towing trailers with equipment, tools, generators, etc, smaller RV's, SUV's & pickups towing boats, campers, jet ski's, snowmobiles. I often wonder where the cops are. These vehicles are overweight & the bridges over other roads, creeks, rivers, etc, were not designed for repeated loads larger than passenger cars (the state snow plows are the largest legal loads) so they are taking a toll. Not to mention the exits/ entrances can't geometrically accommodate their turning radius. Lots of the step vans / box trucks have ladders on the roof so I wonder how many low bridge strikes there are, which could send a ladder piercing through some poor schmuck's windshield. Plus they're top heavy & the sharp curves have no "banking".
    Also to any / all of you truckers complaining about your "taxpayer / fuel tax dollars going to roads I can't drive on" - most of the parkways in NJ/NY do not have any route designation, thus they get no federal funding. In CT, the Merritt / Wilbur Cross parkways are designated a "CT Route", NOT a Federal route, so the funding formula is mostly State funded, with only a small fraction Federal. Therefore if you're from Texas or wherever, you are not really paying much if anything for these parkways. But you do, as others have pointed out, reap the benefit of reduced car traffic on adjacent Interstates you can use (most parkways parallel Interstates or other expressways trucks can use).

    They really, REALLY, need better signage for some of these park way roads. Half way down the ramp, or mid turn off the main road doesnt cut it. Can't back up a 60 foot truck with impatient yankees behind you yelling, screaming and blowing the horn.

    • @SaintsPurgatory
      @SaintsPurgatory Před 8 lety +20

      Well Arizona driver, it's pretty damn simple. Those roads are not built for tractor trailers. Signs are all over the place in the north east driver. Expressways are for trucks. Parkways are not for trucks. If you don't like it, rebuild all the overpasses to suit yourself.

    • @70Kenny
      @70Kenny Před 8 lety +26

      No, it ISN'T "that damned simple." Standardized bridge heights are in place everywhere except the backwards Northeast. The fact that this accident happened at all is a reflection of that particular region's reticence to update its early 1900's infrastructure. it's being done in places like Oregon and Washington State. Catch up, Northeast!

    • @SaintsPurgatory
      @SaintsPurgatory Před 8 lety +26

      You seem to be so butt hurt about the signs. How about getting butt hurt over this idiot driving on a parkway that he isn't supposed to be on? Yes, these parkways were never designed for tractor trailers. They were designed for passenger vehicles only. We don't have to change a thing to update anything. The roads were designed for their intended use, and we could care less what you do in the northwest. However, if you drive in NYC or the northeast in general, read and obey the signs. It is that simple. Can you comprehend? Read the damned signs or stay out of the northeast. We won't be butt hurt if you never come here. Fucking morons.

    • @SaintsPurgatory
      @SaintsPurgatory Před 7 lety +23

      There are many legal truck routes in the north east. The roads that do not allow trucks is because they weren't planned to be truck routes. Why are so many truck drivers getting their feelings hurt over this? You can always get where you need to go on the legal truck routes. The routes that are built for trucks are plenty and if you cannot read and obey signs then you have no business driving.

      @Kenwesttheartist Před 6 lety +6

      Dan Addis I am a truck driver. No GPS helps out. Regardless whether it's for semis or cars. That's why they make Road Atlas. They update the Atlas every year. Tells you which parts of the city are truck route parts and which are not. Gives you bridge height and length laws of each state. It's ok to use the GPS to see how long it'll take to get somewhere, but if you depend on a GPS all the time, you're bound to wind up in a situation you don't want to be in. Don't rely on that GPS. Whether it's a Rand McNally or not. Use your head, open that book and pay attention to road signs. It's all there for a reason. Also calling the customer ahead of time to ask for directions for deliveries helps out also. Sometimes if you're running ELogs, you can send a message about directions on how to get somewhere using truck route directions from a driver that's been there before and uploaded the directions for the next driver to follow.

    I've been living in Faifield off Exit 44 since 1970 and have been driving this stretch for nearly 40 years so I know it well.
    We see one of these about once a year
    This guy got crossed up probably at Ex 40 in Norwalk where the highway portion of "Super 7" turns back to a local road, but then again, the only Dollar Store in that direction is along I-95 and there's nothing North of there he wouldn't take I-84 if he was heading East
    That said... the video doesn't explain he probably got on at Ex 40B where it crosses 7 (assuming he would take the first possible exit once realizing his error) which after entering the parkway on a 5% grade for the first 3/4 mile (which is why the road is not meant for trucks) he traveled over 3 miles on that scenic route in all that car traffic and had to negotiate a total of 4 underpasses all alike, before arriving at Exit 41.
    Nerve wracking I'm sure but aside from his navigation, it is safe to say he handled his rig admirably considering the heavy traffic in which he was driving.
    His only other solution would be to pull over and call for a police escort

    In the northeast if it’s a “Parkway” no trucks allowed. That cop on the grass waiting for him will teach the driver that fact with a large instruction fee

    Well done knew how to tackle the problem, and did so with minimal inconvenience to other road users. By the way, that little off-white car in the next lane looks to be travelling far too close to the car in front of it.
