    The final image was taken on the Canon RP. The Bokeh lights in the foreground was from a waxy-leaf bush that had sunlight sparking on it and I used that as a foreground element, either camera could have taken this picture easily.

      Its a huge difference in my opinion. The canon rp always has a color tone scheme added to the pictures, whereas the 5dc ones are always contrasty, natural in color. But you are right - either of the two couldve taken this shot. And thats the point. Thanks for the vid!

      @@davepastern yes this was a difficult question really, the side lighting creates a lot of shape, it would have been easier if i could have taken a photo on the 5d to compare and youd see the difference then more.

      @@MartinCastein yeah, but photography doesn't always work that way Martin. The image does test us - and make us think, which is what it should do. Too many people are captured in the gear side of things. I know a friend's husband who probably has 20k of Canon gear and doesn't use any of it (R5, R6, bunch of lenses etc). It drives my friend (his wife) absolutely crazy. I'd love some of his gear and would use it 100%, but he is on good income compared to me and can afford to throw money at gear. I have to work very hard even for bargain budget gear.

    Great video Martin, very informative. Was of great interest to me as I,m a new 5D classic owner, and so impressed by the results so far. As a hobbyist photographer, and my main interest don't require speed, the 5D suits me down to the ground. My first taste of digital was a Nikon D200, and couldn't get on with the colours, looked unrealistic if that makes sense, greens in particular. So now shooting with the 5D like a breath of fresh air. Keep up the good work, and fabulous end image and my money is on the RP, because of the colour cast.

    A big THANK YOU, Martin, for this video!
    Let me elaborate a bit for the audience: looking for decent information about the RP and down-to-earth review, I stumbled upon Martin's channel. Next thing you know I binge watched his videos about the RP, 5D, 6D, D700, etc.
    I asked him 'Well, what about a comparison: RP vs 5D. The most affordable FF dslr vs the most affordable FF mirrorless?"
    This was just some days ago and here it is - not just an answer, but actually a full video with some marvellous examples in the process of comparing the two great (each in its own way) cameras. As a proud owner of the 5D I can say that I will never part with it, but I can't wait for some decent offer to get my hands on the RP, pair it with some nice manual lens and let that zebra highlight focus capabilities & articulating screen do their magic.

    I am struggling right now because as much as I love the functionally of the mirrorless cameras they all have a sort of digital look to the files that isnt what I was used to coming from my 5d classic and my 5d mark 2. There seems to be a loss of 3 dimensionality as well. I shoot sports with my 1DX and when I switched to my R6, Im not as happy with the files. They look more like video frame grabs than pictures.

    That was an excellent video, world-class work and information. Your subscriber base should be much larger, and I am sure it will be sooner than later. I think the images from both cameras were excellent, obviously far far more credit to you more than the cameras. As for the final image? I am thinking it certainly could be either camera, and I would not be surprised to be wrong in my guess. But I am guessing it was taken with the 5D classic, however I would not be disappointed to be wrong, but I would be happier if I were right. I have not looked at other comments or answers so my guess is unbiased.

    Thanks for yet another enlightening lesson, Mr. Castein. If anything, with this video it is quite clear that beyond the tools, it is the ability and taste of the photographer what really counts. I am a lucky user of an old 5D Classic and I must say that there is something special about this camera. I have a lot of gear and in the end I always end up going back to my 5D with just a nifty fifty and it always makes me pleased about the results. I’ve seen your videos about the similarities with the 6D. I see some minor differences in the colour science of both cameras. I was considering purchasing one but I wonder whether is worth it having the 5D and with no complaints about it.

      @@MartinCastein I'm back again. I've sold my RP around 3 months ago and it's was the best choice in my opinion.
      The 5D was significantly more fun to use in all situations, and I was generally happier with the files, as they didn't need much of any editing. I didn't need video at all either.
      I paired the 5D with a 50mm and it was amazing, and I also tried the 35mm f/2 IS USM, and they fit perfectly. The character of those lenses also work significantly better on the 5D rather than the RP.

    Very interesting. I think the 5D has now become a bit of a "specialist" tool because it does have some quality or tactility in its files that no other camera manages. It's a bit like Leica (if I can take your unlikely comparison and raise it!). There's something about a Leica image that's unmistakable.
    I think another thing going for it is the fact that in its day it was built as a flagship model. This is far from being the case with the RP and again I feel the quality of that "intent" is palpable.

    Fantastic looking images Martin, and a superb comparison between the two cameras. I'm recently experiencing a similar scenario with my old Nikon D3 that I'm getting back into. There is certainly something special about the older tech, with regard to their sensors and processors, and the final image they present. Also the use of a big optical viewfinder, always gets me going. To be honest, I love my RP, but still haven't completely gelled with it yet, mainly due to the dynamic range approach being slightly different to what I'm familiar with regards to the Nikon. That certainly, isn't a camera fault, but me, adjusting to a different manufacturer and technical approach.
    With regards to the these comparisons.
    The last image I think, is from the 5D, as it has a particular look to it. But (A big one at that) I've managed to get certain images from the RP that look just as blistering as the D3. When I scrutinize my results. I realize it's my approach to my settings and exposure that ultimately give me what I'm looking for!
    On a footnote to the above, I've recently purchased an old Olympus E-P1 (Had one 10 years ago) for my Grandson, and I've been able to extract files from that, that equally match the D3 and the RP. So it just goes to show, It can certainly be down to your approach (and maybe the lenses) that can really dictate your results, plus I suppose the emotional feeling you get from that particular camera your using. Sorry Grandson, I'm keeping it, and I'll get you something else :)
    Great work again Martin, and keep up the engaging videos and content.

I think I have a 50% c hence of being correct. I use my 5D for its more filmic aesthetic, mostly as a street camera with an old EF 28 mm f2.8. and I love how skin tones and shadows come out but the RP is easier to get exposure right and is more often the one I use. Martin, excellent video... as a 5D Classic and a 6D Classic owner (I guess the term "Classic" should apply to the 6D1 as well) for me it was very easy to spot which file came from which camera, the greens on the 5D always look more blueish that is why the color contrast vs the brown horse... In the RP shot the grass blends more with the horse. As you have mentioned, Canon move to a more earthy brown palette in all their cameras, that is why files look as if they were taken at the golden hour.
    If the successor of the 5D is the 6D, I would say the successor of the 6D is the R6, not the 6Dii nor the RP.
    I have a chance the other day to do some casual tests with my 6D and my cousin's (also 20mp) R6, and the raw files from both look pretty much identical, the body is like a little 6D, but of course, is way, way more expensive. Since I don't do any video, I wouldn't spend $2750 for the mirrorless perks but the same IQ as my $410 6D.
    I would love to see one of your comparisons between the 6D and the RP -or 6Dii- IQ.That would be interesting.

    Hiya,
    Brilliant video thanks, just goes to show how amazing the older tech is & always will be!
    What are your thoughts on getting any colour/look you like from any camera sensor in post production when shooting raw & using LR/C1; surely raw is the digital negative of the entire spectrum of blacks, whites & greys, therefore any camera 'look' in the world could be recreated? Does it work like that? If so that would completely negate the type of camera/sensor you are using; or will every model/brand always have a signature look, even on the raw files?
    Many thanks for all the videos, infinitely helpful, I'm learning loads!
    Regards

    • @MartinCastein
      @MartinCastein  Pƙed rokem +1

      so basically everyone says it works like that but it doesnt in practice. Ive worked with some very high end retouchers and even they cant do it. Raw also isnt an entire spectrum of whats captured, i think the word raw is misleading to some degree, it has colour science, noise reduction and sharpening baked into it. otherwise everything would look the same and it simply doesnt. In the end a Raw file is a digital file put together by the camera and written on a memory card. The camera manipulates the data from the sensor before writing it.

      I've gotta say Ive always preferred the look of Canon, they're almost soft & sharp, with more depth to the image & colours. Despite Fuji's film Sims I think Canon are more filmic, I also believe Canon make their own sensors. My first X100s sensor had similar qualities & depth almost magic to Canon, before they went X Trans.
      Sony & Nikon despite looking excellent seem more digital. I've owned all 4 of these brands over 10 years but am now heading back to where I started with Canon!... & You're answer above has just totally convinced me & made me realise I was probably trying to get a more Canon look in post production which is impossible to even try!
      It's very nuanced but I definitely think the subtle differences are clear.

    In early 2020..
    The only Camera I owned was the 5DMKII and I definitely felt it's age & limitations.
    The EOS-R & RP existed but With my budget initially, I wasn't ready to move to the RF system.
    I ended up buying the 6DMKII at a fantastic price Jan 2020 for about $830 on Canon's refurbished website. I honestly Loved the 6DMKII. It definitely felt like an upgrade.
    The autofocus, functionality, flippy screen, added resolution & dynamic range. Etc.
    I then picked up an EOS-R in Sept 2020.. I enjoyed some aspects of it but the button lay out and the touch bar thing annoyed me. I just never "got use" to it. So now I had 3 camera bodies: 5DMKII, 6DMKII & EOS-R.
    In the summer of 2021 I was able to swing getting the Canon R5 in August if I sold My 6DMKII.
    I personally would have rather sold the EOS-R first but I decided to go all in on the RF system.
    2 mo later in late October I sold the EOS-R & picked up the R6.
    The R5 & R6 work quite well together. Transitioning between the two cameras is seamless. I highly recommend both.

    I think in terms of full frame look the RP is not capable enough to show such a depth of field as the 5d does. It is for whatever reason a full frame but without any effect. So I would cpme to the conclusion to buy a 250d and to be happy. Or in my case a 60d:) Cheers🎉

    I'm so sick of all the "pros" on youtube talking about "the RP is okay if you're a beginner" ......meanwhile, your photos with the RP look way better than theirs with their expensive Sony setups. People are so hypnotized by the marketing and tech, they forget what photography is about.

    • @MartinCastein
      @MartinCastein  Pƙed rokem +1

      thanks, i understand where you are coming from. I think people forget that the camera is just a tool. for certain people that sony might do things they need for their job but the idea that any camera is for beginners or not capable is just silly. Its all about what the photographer can do. People think about their gear far too much and not enough about what they are doing.

    I don’t agree with you about getting the camera away from the face. That’s the opposite of beneficial to me.
    What I do enjoy with the R and RP is being able to use the rear touch screen like a track pad to easily and precisely move the focus point around the evf.

    • @MartinCastein
      @MartinCastein  Pƙed 2 lety

      thats fair enough, i like being able to get it away from my face as an option so i can put the camera at angles that would take more effort to really get to. Everyone is different though. :)

      @@MartinCastein Oh yes, please don't misunderstand me. I enjoy using the flip out screen to get new and interesting angles where appropriate but when shooting normally, I do prefer to use the EVF. It's more stable and really focuses your attention on the composition only since that's all you can see.

    • @MartinCastein
      @MartinCastein  Pƙed 2 lety

      I know what you mean Ian I agree with that, I use the EVF mainly but sometimes its nice to be able to get different angles with the flip out screen :)

    Side note on the people asking for 5Dc vs 6D
    I bought a 6d to use my 5dc less because I thought they’d be similar enough that I’d always go for the 6D, and my 5D would get a bit of a reprieve.
    What happened was I ended up selling the 6d because I kept coming back to the 5D. It’s simple and rugged and I felt more at home on it.
    I’d say if someone owned a 6d first and bought a 5Dc sometime later, they’d probably keep going back to the 6D

      How did the 6d handle compared to the 5Dc? I'm thinking of getting a 6d but I don't want to change my workflow^^ The 6d seems close enough. How did you find it? Apart from in the end liking the 5d more and selling the 6d that is!

    Imagine canon put the canon 5d classic into a r5 body- canon might likely regain the mirrorless camera from Sony, a me also feels that the 5d classic is a far better piece of machine in terms of colour feels, and dynamic range
