  • The funeral of the president of Iran, Ebrahim Raisi, is taking place after he was killed in a helicopter crash. The accident happened in bad weather in a mountainous region in the north west of the country. Thousands have mourned him in the streets, but his death has also been celebrated by his critics on social media. Raisi's record on human rights has been heavily criticised.

    Was he „killed“ or died in crash? Doesn‘t „kill“ imply beeing done by someone?

      Thanks for your question. No, 'kill' doesn't mean that it was caused by someone, it can also be 'caused by something', for example in an accident.

      In my mother tongue, Spanish, "kill" implies intention or done by somebody else. Even so, I often hear things like my example above.

      Yes, you can. Polarised usually means to the opposite ends of two sides, divided can mean multiple. However, in this context is has the same meaning.

    I don't think using "Kill" in here is correct! Kill means to cause someone to die, you can say "was killed" or "died."

      😊 You're right, 'Iran president' is the subject in this sentence, and we would usually say 'The president of Iran was killed in a helicopter crash' in conversation. However, in news headlines, we tend to remove words that aren't necessary. This is to make the headline shorter.

May God bless him. He really cared about us unlike the former presidents and he did his best to be a good president

    He was a tyrant, a liar, and an executioner. We Persians are euphoric about his death and that of a few others in this crash. The only regret is that they didn't live to stand trial for their excesses and crimes. He is responsible for loss of many innocent lives, including women and children.
