Inside the Taliban's war on drugs - BBC News

  • Afghanistan’s Taliban leaders have been more successful in cracking down on opium than anyone ever has, a BBC investigation has found.
The BBC has travelled to major poppy growing areas and had exclusive access to remote provinces where our journalists have seen that farmers have either not grown opium poppy complying with the Taliban’s ban, or they’ve had their poppy crops destroyed if they defied the order.
This is backed by research from UK based experts who have analysed satellite images and said the drop in opium cultivation is likely to be as much as 80%.
The crackdown has big global ramifications, with most of the world’s opium coming from Afghanistan.
Produced, filmed and edited by Imogen Anderson, Sanjay Ganguly and Rachel Wright

yes but according to the drug addicted west, there is no other solution but to grow heroin. As if before the country was destabilized, these farmers weren't growing other things. Change is painful and you cannot make change without sacrifice. The Aghan people survived a decades of bombing and war. I'm sure they will get by without selling drugs to the world. America is very hypocritical, their jails are filled to the brim with people who sold the same plants that were grown by these farmers that they are showing "sympathy" for. But in their sympathy they could not stop bombing the fields of other crops the country had for 20 years. hypocrites.

The taliban did the same thing back in the 90s. They enforced harsh consequences against growing poppies for opium and under their rule opium production went to 0%. They completely eliminated it. But they did not get the credit they deserved because of their religious views and because they wanted to rebuild Afghanistan on their own terms aligned with their social views and cultural context rather than on western ideas that clashed with their culture. They were also supported by most of the common people in Afghanistan who just wanted stability. I spent more than three and half years working in Afghanistan between 2001 and 2008. One project I worked on was in Nangahar called CRAWLS in 2001. It was funded by US INL, Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs. Our job was to offer villagers options to growing poppy which included schools, irrigation systems, clinics, roads and the like. I used to say to the villagers, If I give you an irrigation system, you can't use it to grow poppy in some vague hope they might comply. They didn't of course. It is interesting however, for all that is wrong with the Talibs, they are effective in eliminating the opium production and the west should do whatever it can to support that. One US option that floated around at the time was dropping agent orange up a couple of valleys. The Talibs need proper whipper snippers or tractors with mowers to complete the job on the opium and also the hashish that they grow in rotation..
