- It's finally happened! The new UltRank group held a panel of the top ranking Super Smash Bros Ultimate players across the world to develop the first "official" tier list. Here I go over the list and give my thoughts on it.

Also, puff ain't nearly as privileged in Ultimate. If it were....honestly? Still not safe enough. So much other bullshit to deal with against Cloud, but Bair is particularly deadly with Cloud's move speed.
In turn, though, it takes skill to use it. Far more skill than Melee Puff's Bair anyway.

Puff bair by itself isnt that good in melee, there are more disjointed ones. Its puffs drift that makes it fucked up
I think the most important thing to remember about this list is that just because a character is lower on the list, that doesn't mean they are unusable.
Most other Smash games have an 'E' or 'F' tier for the terrible characters, but this list only goes down to 'D-' which just means the characters have big flaws which makes them hard to use.
I’d even argue the only unviable character is ganon
@@ABC-ik9vj I've won a local with ganon, granted half the entrants were in middle and high school so it doesn't really count. Person I was in grand finals with was playing joker and pichu (pre nerf) and I just didn't care.

@@yurplethepurple2064 He's still a very good noob killers. Becaude he has a lot of great moves but his stats are just shit. If he had better stats, he would be high tier at the very least. Nair, Side B, Dash attack, Up smash can fuck a lot of noobs that doesn't know how to deal with attacks. It's only when you're able to edgeguard hin freely he became the worst.
I agree. Melee does have an F tier tho. Bowser is the tier. You cannot use Bowser.

i love that everyone agrees that shulk is S tier but he just doesn't get used

Except Latin America's players on the panel. They have an article with this for context, and they broke down regional differences in opinion. Japan, for example, thinks much lower of Wario than Europe. Kind of funny because in 2019-2020, Japan would've had Wario so high up
Thats how I feel about Drytron right now in the current Yugioh format. Easily tier 2, but no ones fucking playing it because Kashtira is that good.
People want to complain, but when about 1/2 your roster is competitively viable you have a pretty good game.
Yea the balance is really good. I love smash bros. This tier list is way off though.

According to the article, the tier distinction is: S (Top), A (High), B (Upper Mid), C (Lower Mid), D (Low)
So yeah, Puff is technically a lower mid tier character.
I find it wild that they put lucario as lower mid. Like naw this character ain’t even mid.

Fun fact: Dedede was a very valuable asset to Peli on his run to 1st place at VCA 2021, getting a reverse 3-0 on Space’s Inkling and Aegis in winners semis after losing the first 2 games as Sonic, and then beating Leon’s Lucina and Chrom with solo Dedede in winners finals. This makes Dedede the only character below B+ to have won a major in post-quarantine

Yeah, DDD does well versus Lucina, and chrom and does alright versus Inkling (Inkling can’t kill him). Aegis tho? Sounds hard

According to Esam, this list was made before Zackray picked up Pit, so he would actually probably go even higher
A friend of mine who is super into Street Fighter explained the difference between Ken and Ryu really well. Ryu is better side to side, Ken is better up and down. As a result Ryu is better in Street Fighter, while Ken is better in Smash. It's not a huge difference, but enough to explain what is seen here
Ryu is better in results actually. And Ryu MU chart is better than Ken, has better neutral and more kill potential.
I think it's because after the last Ryu Buff, ken was better, but after it Ryu becomes better pick against a lot of characters in the game

I picked up Mr. Game and Watch on Wii U which was my first smash game and I continued in Ultimate despite knowing nothing of the Competitive scene at the time. It's cool to see such an interesting character climb up to S- tier since it's debut in Melee as an unfinished mess.
Today is a happy day for us G&W mains.
Game and Watch mains are impressive. Idk how anybody masters that character and yet he’s so popular

As much as we like to complain about steve and aegis, it's still really impressive how well balanced ultimate is even after a few years of meta development. 20 characters that are considered top teir is really good and like 60-70% of the cast is completely capable of winning big tournaments. There are just as many characters in the S and S+ tier as D tier characters. Obviously the existence of patches helped tune some characters (as well as the lack of patches after FP2 was released leading to FP2 characters being totally busted), but overall I'm content with how ultimate is.
I love the fact that none of the characters go below E tier of F tier. Which means the worst characters in this game is still easily leagues above Melee Bowser, Brawl Ganon, or Smash 4 Zelda.
It's interesting though that only 3 of the top 10 are FP2 characters (Steve, Aegis, Kazuya). Min Min used to be crazy but got nerfed. Seph and Sora aren't anywhere near top tier, really.
I don't understand how we didn't get one more patch for fucking Steve and kazuya (and those weird scattershot buffs on low tiers)
Honestly even the D tier characters could win a major. Zelda just placed top 12 at lvl up
Ikr, even the worst characters like ganondorf and little Mac can do well unlike bad characters from melee or brawl
I like how bottom tier is not called F-tier. Because I think Nintendo did a great job balancing the characters at a point where every character can still have a chance at matches. Just my opinion.
I was going to say exactly that. I don't feel like even Ganondorf is that bad to play casually, you just can't expect a Ganondorf main to ever win against a top tier IRL.

@@theboi5584 Not really, he is Bottom 1 in Brawl and Bottom 5 in 4. He is only a Mid Tier in Melee and even then people say Ganondorf is almost unviable at Higher stakes Tournaments.

I can't express how disappointed I am that Zelda is in D tier. This is the first Smash game where Zelda not only had a solid design for her look, but also the first game where she felt good to play, but when the dust settled she only ended up marginally better than her previous appearances.
In the end, Zelda is still plagued with her poor mobility and a fundamentally poor moveset. Still the best she has been, but that is still a very low bar to clear.
She's significantly better than her past appearances, it's just that most other low tiers are much better than they were before.
Also, there aren't many incredible reps

The majority of people wanting to ban hero was not because he was op, but because people felt, his RNGness would be bad for competitive play, as well as his "language barrier" being a problem
And less than 48 hours after this tier list comes out, we find out Steve is even MORE broken than we could have feared.

I picked Sonic up about a year ago after seeing Sonix go ham on MVD at LVL Up Expo.
I was shocked that I put Sonic on my own list as top 5... Only to find this list did so as well.
I found my soul character after years of searching and... Well... Here we are. Don't worry guys... I don't camp for nothing. Not even Steve or Kazuya.

The Link placement just baffles me. He at least should be higher than Toon Link

From what ive seen lowtiers like ganon, doc, and mac, are very good in casual play because most casuals dont edge guard, so they can easily recover.
Funny how people joked about Steve being in the game and being a top tier before his announcement and is actually the best character in the game. What a timeline we’re in.

It's not "smash fans", it's made by 70 of the top 100 players in the world. People have been making personal tier lists since the game dropped, but there was no point in getting the top players to make a cumulative tier list until the DLC and balance patches stopped.
@@YukonJonSo why didn't they also wait years for Smash 4 as well...? Smash 4 got DLC and patch updates for a while and they didn't just refuse to make tier lists for it.
I think this was a really good tier list. Diddy being above pika is pretty wack, but overall I think this is the best tier list I’ve seen.

It's still possible for him to keep his base design while not being so overturned, just lower the damage of diamond tools increase the base knockback of jab and up tilt and remove the jank he has with block hitstun cancelling and other dumb stuff
Link actually isn't that slow, he has one of the best foxtrots, he can get places quickly. As fast as Mario. Also, people don't know about the potential of zdrop nair. You can cover so much with it. At 100% you can true combo bomb tap into up b or something, hit stun allows it.
This is why this tier list means nothing : "Most panelists had an above average opinion of their main, with 69% being above average to 31% below average. However, only ten panelists rated their main within the character’s outlier range, and two of these were Steve mains who agreed with the majority of panelists about the character being #1. No panelists were a lower outlier on a character they actively mained, though the same could not be said for ex-mains."
Everyone is biased, as it's impossible for a human being not to be so. We can agree on the strongest characters, but from rank A to D its absolutely biased and doesn't mean anything.
Shout out early Ultimate when Pichu and Belmont were good
If Nintendo made a tier list, every Mario character is S, every other Nintendo character is B, and every 3rd part character is F.
Nintendo would put pyra on c tier because her f smash is not "that" fast and would put ganondorf on A tier because his f smash is strong

I honestly think Mewtwo is a really good character. Arguably best fare in the game, grabs are great kill options, great movement if done correctly, amazing off stage, and combos are not that hard.
Link is underrated af he can be an A-

23:00 Link is hella slept on if he’s suddenly the worst of the three Links in this “Official” tier list. He’s definitely much better than Toon Link during the fact that he essentially doesn’t almost the same exact thing as Toon Link, only he can kill much earlier than him.
I also agree that Ike should not be that low.
I think the only reason why Robin is above him on the tier list was because he’s seen slightly more play from people like Angel and Onin.
I wish Kirby was buffed 😔 I would love to see him with more airspeed and better kill options

Honestly this was a really well made tier list. I'd make a few minor changes, most notably bumping Meta Knight to A+ Tier, but I think the top 7, I 100% agree on. Bravo UltRank, Bravo.

I could have never told you a year ago that pika would be below cloud, roy, wolf, and Diddy. That's crazy to me how far what we thought was the best character has fallen
Nope sounds right too me, Esam was the only person pushing pika anywhere near the top and outside of one insane run post quarantine esam ain’t been able to do much because pika is far to inconsistent and therefore doesn’t belong in the top 3

I think both Ike and Link could have been a half-tier higher than they were. Other than that, I liked the list a lot.
Just had this thought, since recovery is so important to viability, there should be a few anti-ceiling recovery moves. What I mean is moves with downward momentum you can use to cancel some upward momentum and save you from ceiling outs. A good candidate for this would be Little Mac, but also heavies like DK, KKR and Bowser.
This would probably just counter characters with already bad recoveries, aka bad characters, making the unviable characters even worse, I doubt a move like this would still be able to counter something like Pika's quick attack

I agree as a forever Ness main. That boy is walking death and he should be Low A at least.
His recovery is indeed garbage though. That matters more at top level and this is a top player tier list.

I main Mario and Mii Swordfighter and to me I think no one has fully unlocked Mii Swordfighters potential in viability just like melee yoshi and how aMSa saw his viability. So I’m gonna push the characters potential and prove that he isn’t a low tier.
I also main Swordy and as soon as I heard bad recovery I knew people were just using the standard Chakram build.
Swordy gets a lot more mobility, kill power, and recovery with a different set of B moves, but since most people play him as a discount Link instead of a Swordfighter this is exactly where he ends up.
Let's both being Swordy up to where he deserves to be.

I think if this list was made after Skyjay's insane run at Collision and good placement at Ultimate Summit 6 Incineroar would definitely be up in mid-high B tier for sure.

But before the new tech, Sonic was either top 1 without a doubt if it's a theorical or top 3 if it's a rentability/practical one (because of his perfect MU chart)
Steve (even before PMLG) already had easily one of the best combo games, one of the best neutrals, some of the best frame data, the best defensive capabilities, some of the best kill confirms, some of the best kill power, one of the best recoveries, some of the best out of shield options, one of the best grounded games, one of the best aerial games, some of the best ledge trapping, some of the best edge guarding, access to exclusive Steve tech, and so much more. He was already with out a doubt the best character in the game
They're both similar in the fact that if you play them optimally they're basically unbeatable and will make the audience fall asleep.

The tier list wouldn't change that much, online is trash but like every good character is still good and every bad character is still bad, the only major changes would be like dedede up 3 spots and sheik down 3.

@@tempatchtheveryweird3665 Way off. Characters who rely on frame traps and whiff punishing, technical inputs, etc, get dramatically worse because of the lack of ability to react and lag spikes messing up execution.
Where as slower characters gain unreactable burst range which is huge as it grants them access to mixups they don't normally have.
Also characters that force you to react to their options and maneuver around them like slow frame data characters, zoners/projectile users, become dramatically better as their unreactable range of their options increases, forcing more guesses from their opponents which they can exploit.
The combination of these elements greatly benefits heavies and zoners who can trade much more favorable in a heavier guess based environment, and dramatically neuters technical reaction based characters who are almost always extremely lightweight who can't afford to take trades off of guessing wrong when they could normally react.
Overall the online meta is very different from the offline meta, to the point where several pros found it caused several bad habits in offline play, and now everyone who can opts to use parsec through PC to reduce the input lag as much as possible.
As a ganondorf main. The only thing I have to dislike about him is his recovery, that’s it.

I can tell you that they probably wouldn't rate Ganondorf as the worst character given how popular he is over there.
Japan Hero is much better because you only have to read the first kana and count the number of letters to know what an option is, they can scan the options much much faster - have you ever seen nico nico douga or chinese bilibili, they put the comments fly on the video because of better information density per space.
So some guy did a brawl meta knight mod in ultimate just to show if he could fair against modern smash. Brawl Meta Knight no doubt destroyed everyone with little to no difficulty.
