  • a ménage a trois between a cat, a mouse and a dog ... for some it's the best comic ever... at least it's one of the most influential that was ever made. Taschen collected the colored sunday pages from 1935 until George Herriman's death in 1944 in one beautiful humongous tome...
    and it's already my personal bargain of 2022: there was a short-lived bargain sale during which Taschen sold the books for only 30€ (coverprice 150€).

    What a classic comic, that was a canny purchase for 30 euros! Glad to learn Picasso liked the strip, as did Alan Moore and hundreds of others. Somewhat surprisingly, H.P. Lovecraft found it too 'twee' and 'insipid'; for his tastes, though he was mostly a stranger to the comic strip, with the exception of Buster Brown and Mansfield's Highlights of History.

    Ahhh... I love Krazy Kat but I have trouble describing exactly why. It feels both like I am going back in time but also as if the strip is coming forward in time to talk about today. I've rarely come across something that in some ways 'stays the same' but still continues to be rich and new with every strip.
    I got as many of the old Fantagraphics paperback collections by year, and now they're coming out in new larger hardcover editions which are lovely, allowing me to fill in the missing years. But i would definitely get more LOAC volumes of they ever continued.
    And i like big books, and I cannot lie. This Taschen edition looks amazing. I grabbed it on a similar massive sale in the US but there it now sits, who knows when I will get my hands on it. I am eager to compare it to the lovely Sunday Press selection volume.
    Thanks for another great video!
    In a side note, while the algorithm gods are putting your video into feeds of new viewers (good for them!);they stopped informing me, a viewer for over half a decade. I unsubscribed and resubscribed, hoping the old 'tuen it off and on again' method resets this. Good thing I came directly here to see where you were. Hope all is going well!

    I recently got a copy of this in the U.S. during that sale. Here it generally goes for $200, but it was on sale for $50. Most of the books in the sale were 50% off, including a book of Crumb's collected sketches that I got for $20. I'm not sure why this was so discounted, but far be it from me to argue.

    I listened to an interview Noah Van Sciver did about Krazy Kat, I think he mention that fallen star comic was written after Herriman's son died.

    Yeah, on the last Taschen promotion this was, incredibly, priced at €30!… A steal….. I bought it at €50 two years ago - still a great price. Strangely enough I found that the Fantagraphics editions do saturate the colours better that this one. Perhaps this edition is more faithful to the original newspaper print tones? That would be nice to know…

    • @earlgrey862
      @earlgrey862  Před 2 lety +1

      to my eyes the colors look at least pretty much (facsimile like) as in old newspapers... I don't think that I would like the colors to be more saturated

    the book looks good and seems to contain a lot of information. I didn't know Krazy Kat until I saw the conference by Francois Schuiten. He introduced me to so many different cartoonists.
    I have to read much more about Krazy Kat.
    I saw in the format the "The Complete Little Nemo" by Winsor McCay (by Taschen Edition). Do you own this book too?

    • @earlgrey862
      @earlgrey862  Před rokem +1

      yes, the two McCays are outstandingly gorgeous... but you have to look for the real huge ones (they've did a second or third edition in a still big but much smaller format... probably collecting both in one book, I don't know).

    Yikes. 200 dollars over here.
    I have some black and white fantagraphics volumes. But my Library of Am Comics edition of one year of Krazy Kat dailies has been my favorite, maybe because it's easy to pick up and read and the short strips are hilarious and brilliant...really want more of those dailies.

    ....das war ja klar, dass diese Review kommt. Leg den Finger nur in die Wunde, als wenn ich nicht schon traurig genug wäre...😢😭😂
    Aber mal im Ernst. Sehr schöne Besprechung und man bekommt mal einen richtig guten Überblick. Taschen hin oder her, ich denke, dass Thema Krazy Kat werde ich demnächst mal chronologisch angehen. Auch wenn es etwas länger dauert.
    Schönes Wochenene Dir.

    But seriously. Very nice review and you get a really good overview. Taschen or not, I think the Krazy Kat topic will be tackled chronologically in the near future. Even if it takes a little longer.
    Nice weekend to you

      you know what: my first reaction to that offer was to buy at least two of them because it was too good to be true ... should have done so! if you would not have that "mailing accident" I still could flip the second now on Ebay.
      There's a lot more to be said about that Kat for sure... for instance I forgot to tell how the animal characters separated from the preceding strip and got a life on their own and eventually took over.

    I got a copy of this last year for $65. Not as good a deal as finding the Basil Wolverton Artist Edition for $30 a few years back. Have you seen the Taschen Spider-Man book yet? It's a juicy brick of joy.

      @earlgrey862  Před 2 lety +1

      and as to Spiderman by Taschen I actually wanted to write that this is out of my wheelhouse... but then I looked onto that Taschensite: What? They want to do a whole Marvel library? ... tell you what: when they start to throw that stuff out for 30€ I definitely will reconsider my attitude towards Marvel :P
