gorgeous and wonderful ... as expected: the artist edition of David Mazzucchelli's (and Frank Miller's) groundbreaking Batcomic: 4 issues that set the standard, now in a format that sets a new standard as well. It's even bigger than all the bat-artist editions before... at least than the ones that I own.

The map was originally on the back cover of 2000AD Prog 626, which featured the first part of The Horned God.
amazing 👏
Beautiful books. I have Slaine Eagle Comic reprints, but they are nothing like those books. Pat Mills, what a legacy. Best to you from Texas, as always.
I’ve been trying to find rat God in a hardcover for a decent price for a while now it is so hard
I love the fact that they rescanned original negatives and print it on big pages. It's stunning looking. Most of the previous releases was just scanned images from first edition pages.
You made me rediscover Spirou and now it's time for Gil Jourdan.
new to this channel! very cool content!
I love Gary's work!
The Brute Editions from Delirium are pretty great, too. I'm rereading Neverwhere and Muvovum in the new DH versions while comparing them to those oversized grayscales. I'd love to see a comparison between Corben's original color CMY plate painting process compared to Jose's digital magic. Not as easy as hard black lines over color for sure. Corben was a beast.
DH editions look extremely well done but i still think the french editions are the way to go if you care for size, colour reproduction and extras. It annoys me deeply this insistence of the US market in reducing size and format on all all european standard formats to tabloid size - sometimes even smaller. For the price these books should be gigantic,
I might be wrong, but I think these new editions are actually recoloref, using the grayscale original art as a starting point. I believe this is also the cause of the blurred look to the art, since the color affects the value of the grays. Essentially, if the contours of the colors don’t match the grayscale exactly, then the outer edges of a form can look darker or lighter, depending on the color used. It’s a bit like in older comics where there’s a large black shape and you can see where the blue of Batman’s cape ends and the yellow of his belt begins.
if this comment wasn't done by you I probably would dare to challenge that assessment 😁 ... because Villarubia's explanation of his m.o. sounded ... äh... more complicated. you're right probably nevertheless.
Oh, if he said something to the contrary, I would go with that. I just thought I had seen grayscale artwork for Den. Maybe it was for a different Corben project.
I see Walt supplied the books. They really spoil us with the selection and prices these days. Lucky you got it, as it got sold out.
I pre-ordered it about a year ago.... it felt like a decade though 🤣
I died at “ Ziss Doooshbag”😂😂😂
The next Den release is right around the corner!
I was disappointed with Kommix. I didn't realize it was not a graphic novel with a fresh story. Nonetheless, cool graphics inside.
Freakin' dustjackets are the biggest plague of American hardcovers. Nevertheless, I'll stick to my old Catalan Communications softcover, despite the typeset lettering.
Hey Earl Grey, love the videos, just wanted to say, as an Irishman, Slaine is pronounced Slawn-Ya :) Also, have you ever read Black Science?
Slawn-Ya! that's interesting, thank you... even though I believe if I would talk about a comic called "Slawn-Ya" nobody would understand what I'm talking about 😁. And yes, Black Science is great!
@@earlgrey862 No way! a response! since I have you, I watched a video from yours the other day and the comic you were covering really stood out art -wise, I cant for the life of me find the right one now, but I have to ask, have you ever heard or covered Blackhole by Charles Burns?
Yeah, I've heard of that unknown and obscure book 😎 ... I have a whole Charles Burns-playlist, but panellogy 145 was about "black hole" proper (now I wonder how I did this in under 7 minutes???), while I showcased the studioedition of black hole in pan185.

Actually this map (in colour) comes also in the 1998 Heavy Metal edition “Sláine, The Horned God - The Complete Story” published by Hamlyn in the UK. The colour in this edition looks definitely more vibrant (saturated) and the blacks deeper that any previous edition. Does it comes with any extra material?…
not too much, but it's okay: 8 pages of covers in color, 3 pages with chapter break illustrations, 1 page "dictionary" for some key "celtic" terms, 1 page afterword by mills, 1 page bios of Mills and Bisley
What a beautiful box set.
Giraud's art is beautiful in The Irish Version, I definitely didn't miss Vance on this book:)
Hi there. Just for the records. If I remember correctly, I've read somewhere that the colored version of the „Tír na nÓg“-map has been indeed produced exclusively for the anniversary edition ... ... but it's, of course, based on a black-and-white-version you'll find in volume 1 of the regular „Sláine“-edition ... und auf Seite 5 von „Morgendämmerung“, Band 1 der Dantes-Ausgabe (mit Handlettering des Übersetzers). Thanks a lot for another „thumbs up“ in the direction of the German edition ... it's highly appreciated! With a thousand Cheers, JRN
Amazing stuff!

Hello! I'm from Brazil and I've been really enjoying your videos. The comic market here is quite diverse, with American, South American, European, Asian and even African works. Slaine was already published here a long time ago, but I wasn't interested in that kind of reading at the time (I'm only 19). Really hope that one day everything will be republished here and with a quality similar to this edition.
Amazing art. Never read this one. Waiting for the TPB version to arrive.
Don’t wait. They put out the soft cover out almost at the same time. I don’t think the american trade format is gonna happen.
@@fizroynelson thanks for the tip. Already bought the soft cover version 😉
@@DanielPereira-ge4uw just got mine in the mail. It is well worth it. My first edition is falling apart. They did a good job here.
Wow, never heard of it! (which is the main reason I follow your channel). Too late to the party though, it's OOS everywhere. :) I may get the paperback anyway. Resellers are appearing in Ebay to no one's surprise (the downside of limited editiones…).
wow, they went quick :/
A lot of (or all?) Booke One was also publshed in Heavy Metal (US edition) back in the mid 90’s.. My copy is lost now, sadly..
What a classic series! Loved it.
Bisley's colour work really transgressed expectations of what colour rendering in comics could be, when it was released, certainly in 2000ad.The downside of that was the number of imitators of Bisleys style exploded and to my mind 2000ad seemed to promote this very obvious style plagiarism because it sold more copies.
It became boring to see so many imitators.'yet another Bisley RIP off'.One of the more convincing imitators (Chris Cunningham became a very good music video director.Look for Aphex Twin's windowlicker video.
Definitely getting this new print😍 I probably settle for the softcover version that is easier to get though. You already had a fine hardcover in German so this überbox was a logical step.
argh, windowlicker is the worst... and the best
very cool!
been really enjoying Precious Metal, Ian Bertram a true modern classic talent, (Hollingsworth complimenting it all pretty well too !) Peace from Detroit
Now you are my favorite comic collector. You made me love the european comics. Can you make also a video with your favorite black and White comics? Probably a video with mixed media art It would be awesome!
I've ordered city of belgium, i can't wait! As a young italian you also made me Discover Lorenzo Mattotti 😅. That's strange. Boy of Boy! Year one! Bombastisch!
This book is too good! Thanks for the coverage!
C.Burns is all time favourite. Now waiting for the Final Cut hardcover. Thank you for the video. 👌
Hey, nice review, thanks. One correction-Graphitti Designs did not do Artist’s Edition until years after IDW. The IDW books were the first, starting with Dave Stevens’ the Rocketeer. A minor point, but I’m biased.
yes, you're right... waiiiiiit ... are you the real Scott Dunbier? stupid fan moment here, sorry. Thank you for all the great books you did!
I’ve been hoping for this book for years! It’s fantastic! I love the artist’s edition format and this is one of the best.
Looks pretty incredibly. These volumes are just too pricey for me to buy any more. So I am crossing my fingers for a peasant "artisan edition" some where down the line.
I own the original first print of Metal Hurlant (the french magazine), the first Neverwhere tpb and the "old german editions" you show here. The colors are definitly the best in the oldest ones (metal hurlant and the first print english neverwhere). When I bought the old german editions you showed here I was also disappointed when I compared them to my older versions. The newer ones are even worse. I don't know what they are doing lol...
🥰😍🤩
Thank you for the excellent packaging & shipment.
IDW also did a Daredevil Born Again artists edition about 10 years ago, and they're bringing that back in to print.
Just read David mazzucchellis book (paul austers city of glass). Loved it and recommend it! Definitely one of my favorite artists
I wish that they did an Artist Edition of City of Glass. Although this Batman year one is amazing, Mazzucchelli's art style is at it's peak when it is like that cartoony "bigfoot" minimalist style featured in City of Glass and Rubber Blanket.
I got mine yesterday but haven't opened it yet. It's pretty huge. It's definitely my favorite Batman story ever (next to Batman #232). My aunt sent me a TPB of it in 1988 and I still have it. I didn't get the story back then but loved the art style. I also have that absolute version. Good stuff Mr. Earl.
My first artist edition, and I just can't stop studying the line work.
It looks stunning! I don't usually go for art books or artists editions, but this one might just need to get into my collection.
You don't know what you're missing! I have a Buscema and Michael Turner artist edition and they're both amazing.
very good to talk about one of the most talented and influence in the french/belgium comic medium . ''Queue De Cerise '' ( Stephanie as you call her) was plan to be much more active in all the adventure of Gil Jourdan BUT monsieur Charles Dupuis demand that she stay in the back ground because ''what sale is male character'' Tillieux had to comply but in the last adventures she getting more and more - after the success of Natacha - Dupuis stop to mind about all male cast... but YES Gil Jourdan and Tillieux ART is in the top 10 essential.
Cornelius has beautiful editions, not just for Burns but pretty much everything. I wish they would have english versions.
Nice little addition to the Burns library. I loved it, since I don't have those other books of yours. ;)
What I first flipped open Caprice I was blown away by the printing quality. I finally saw why Burns decided to print his comics/illustrations in France rather than US.
That may be true, but also I feel he wanted to put out his new story as a single volume for bigger and more commercial impact. Release date has been delayed btw.
I’m a big Burns fan so I get the French and US books! Yeah, I’m also disappointed that the Final Cut will be smaller dimensions when released here in the US. I missed out on Modern Horror. It’s tough to find a reasonably priced copy.
@@jeremystone286 Yeah, according to Amazon it will be the same size, but according to publisher it won't so who knows! :)
