    “Its not how fast you play, its what you say!”
    - Ginger Baker

    Always felt like he's listening to no less than 3 other drums in his head and what you actually hear is him doing fills within that conversation.

    I saw Cream play at the Whiskey in 1966. Eric and Jack were fantastic but you couldn't take your eyes off Ginger. He absolutely thundered in that small venue. How he managed to survive 20 years addicted to heroin and still play so brilliantly is beyond me. If you haven't watched it, check out "Beware Mr. Baker." That gives you a little insight into Ginger. Also, the 3 day reunion concert they gave in 2006 at Prince Albert Hall is earth-shattering. He lived for one thing: playing the drums. He screwed over practically everybody he came across, including his own kids and wife, and didn't give a shit. He was focused on drumming and that's it. He scoffed at the idea that he was a rock drummer. He was a jazz drummer and he always said so.

    The master of the 6 stroke roll and flams played so many tasteful ways. Love Ginger Baker.

    • @kapalin846
      @kapalin846 Před 2 lety

      It’s the five stroke, bc he would phrase it over 4/4 in dotted quarter fashion! Elvin Jones/bebop influence is doubt. He just loved the roll rudiments.

    Peter Eward "Ginger" Baker: The general public is so fucking dumb, if anybody could think Bonham was anywhere near the kind of drummer I am, it's just extraordinary. Bonham had technique, but he could'nt swing a fucking bag of shit. Or Moony for that matter, I mean if they were still alive today, just ask them.
    Eric: Ginger was nothing like those players, his musical capabilities are full spectrum, he can write an compose an arrange. And he has an ear. And he is harmonic and he is a fully formed musician. Something to which, I concur with. Just one thing left out though, he is untouchable amongst all drummers from then till now. The master of all masters.

      Thanks for recommending this Liz, what an introduction to Ginger. After this I watched the very old footage of Art Blakey and Ginger Baker duo, which was just absolutely mind blowingly incredible! They were just so in sync and in the moment. Another favourite drummer of mine is Neal Peart from Rush.

      @@jimprior180762 yes, but neal peart is a newbie. Now try Ginger Baker duet with his son Kofi Baker. I’ve seen ginger drum so many times and I can tell you he’s a right bastard but I think he’s a genius and his brain is wired up dfferently than an ordinary person. If you’ve got time one evening watch “Beware of Mr Baker”. It’s a film about his life and you’ll see what I mean about him not being very nice!!!!
      He’s the only drummer I know who can drum four different rhythms at the same time. Amazing!!!!

      BONZO WAS A GOOD ROCK DRUMMER, NOT EXCELLENT AS TECHNICIAN, AND OBVIOUSLY HE COULDN T PLAY JAZZ BECAUSE HE DONT HAD AKNOWLEDGE IN MUSIC, BUT GINGER WROTE FOR ORCHESTRA! GINGER WAS THE IDOL AND THE INSPIRATION OF BONHAM BUT IS NOT THE OPPOSITE FOR GINGER THAT ALWAYS COSIDERED BONZO, A MEDIOCRE DRUMMER IF NOT A COMPLETE BEGINNER ! THE FACT IS THAT A SIMPLY ROCK DRUMMER CANT HAVE THE SAME KIND OF INDEPENDENCE OF A JAZZ VIRTUOSO DRUMMER LIKE GINGER, ,
