  • Eric Clapton - Guitar
    Jack Bruce - Bass
    Paul Jones - Harmonica
    Pete York - Drums
    Ben Palmer - Piano
From the album What's Shakin', featuring Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Lovin' Spoonful and others. Copyright Elektra records 1965. Eric Clapton and the Powerhouse are a most interesting aggregation, also featuring Stevie Winwood, Paul Jones, Jack Bruce, and Spencer Davis Group drummer Pete York; their three tracks include early versions of "Steppin' Out" and "Crossroads," which Clapton would record with the Bluesbreakers and Cream, respectively.

For those who dont know, clapton isnt playing the first solo. Thats jack on bass who was still getting in gear on how to play solos on bass. Then clapton hits lead you have to have a keen ear to pick up on these things

@@ninjavigilante5311 the tone he got on that Les Paul is unmistakable. If you like this listen to the Bluesbreakers album

Bass solo on a Fender bass vii, a 6 string bass used by jack in the early days of cream and with graham bond organization.

It's not a patch on the Beano version recorded about 3 months later but then I've heard bits and bobs of EC about this time - jams with (the awful) Page and the Champion Jack stuff - and I think those 3 days at Decca (late March or early May depending on what you read) he was having a magic moment, even for him then, unsurpassed. I saw an early Cream gig and the progress from the Mayall gigs was astonishing.

Thanks for posting, I've been looking for this for years. I haven't heard it since the 60's, and couldn't remember the personnel or the name of the band, I thought it was the R&B 'Allstars'. One of us in the young band I was in at the time bought it, I think it was an on an EP. I've heard lots of versions over the years especially with Cream but I still like this. You can see how Clapton's style had developed, even at this early stage. 🎸

The first 3 choruses of solo are Jack Bruce on the bass.

@@ninjavigilante5311 agreed. He played a Telecaster in the Yardbirds I believe which has a much thinner sound.
