LC1102 Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta - Ven Dr K Sri Dhammananda

Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta or The Discourse of the Turning of the Wheel of Truth is the First Discourse delivered by the Buddha to His first five disciples after His enlightenment, on the full moon day of Asàlha (July), in Deer Park, Isipatana, near Varanasi (modern Sarnath), India. In this Discourse, the Buddha expounded the fundamental teaching of the Four Noble Truths, which is the universal truths of sufferings experienced by man in life; its cause; its cessation and the way leading to its cessation. He advocated the Middle Path or The Noble Eightfold Path as the only way to end such sufferings and to gain Nibbanic bliss. The Four Noble Truths is the heart and core teaching of the Buddha.
The late Venerable Dr. K Sri Dhammananda explained the essence of this Discourse in a simple and easy to understand manner. He advised that one need not endure physical sufferings nor overindulge in worldly pleasures in leading a religious life.
Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta is one of the 24 Paritta Suttas or Protection Discourses of the Buddha. The chanting of Paritta generates a sense of mental well-being in both the reciter and the listeners especially when the Buddha’s words are recited and listened to with confidence (saddha). Those who would like to recite this Sutta in Pàli may follow the Paritta Chanting contained in a separate CD enclosed.
The late Venerable Dr. K Sri Dhammananda (1919-2006) delivered more than 5600 talks in Malaysia and throughout the world since his arrival in Malaysia in 1952. We are grateful to the Anatta Group for leading the project in re-compiling and editing the talks delivered by the late Venerable.
