      i see you use your gear wrenches a lot ,, i have broke a few in my years ,, i find you break the bolts loose with a normal wrench then use the gear wrench , gear wrenches are not built to bust bolts loose ,, company rep told me that .. also need a spark tester in your list ..

When I’m reassembling my Cub Cadet I Keep the 3/8 & 7/16 in my left pocket and the other 3 in my right pocket. If I’m using say the 1/2 and will need it again I put it so the pointy end faces up. Slide my hand in and instantly know that’s the 1/2”. Rarely do I need the old ratchet and extension

      The "free" one definitely does suck. It's not even really worth having it as a backup because I've had more than one just simply quit for no reason. I do a lot of "mobile" small engine work and now keep the cen-tech 95670 in the truck box.
      I've had it bouncing around in there for about 4-5 years now, no issues.
      I don't know if that model is still available because when I now look it up this one comes up, (looks similar):
      m.harborfreight.com/11-function-digital-multimeter-with-audible-continuity-61593.html
      I use a fluke at home but that's only because I used to work in the electrical field and at the time thought it was cool to overpay for tools.

    Can you maybe do something with a department store lawn tractor? I know is way under the level of what you do but I enjoy them. I currently have a 2009 Troybilt Pony that I use almost daily, a John Deere LX172 that I need to restore some day and some other one that I blew up a few years back.

    • @RustyZipper
      @RustyZipper Před 5 lety +3

      I like the Pony , good unit for $1000 but most of them big box mowers are stamped steel , aluminum rear end gears and plastic everywhere. IMO Not worth restoring because they just won’t last another 30 years. All my Cubs are from 60-80’s and my Deutz - Allis (Simplicity) is 1980’s; after that they just got really cheaply made.

    • @jason-white
      @jason-white Před 5 lety

      @@RustyZipper Yeh it is for sure not the best thing out there. Mine still all in all looks new after 10 years but I take good care of it and keep it out of the weather. The only issue I have is the paint bubbling on the floorboard. I assume the whole undercarriage is rusted.

    My husband passed 3 years ago and I was finally "allowed" to get his Wheel Horse from my in laws who borrowed it. They abused it and it looks like they took parts off of it so I need to fix it. I printed a manual and parts list from the internet. Do you have a post of which tools I need just for working on the wheel horse? I can not afford extras as a young widow and would prefer to get only what I would use on/for the wheel horse 31128. Thank you for your time.
    Also, my hubby was planning a front end loader? (Like a bulldozer bucket but skinnier?) With hydraulic parts and what you called a root digger but we'd use it for planting like a tiller. The kids watched your videos with me and now are determined to build Ben's wheel horse attachments. Thank you for helping to bring hope back to us. 💛💖💚💙❤💜

    I have a suggestion for your budget shop: thrift store pots and colanders make great small parts washers, and since you're in Maine you should be able to find plenty of old enameled lobster pots. I use a water-based parts cleaner or mineral spirits depending upon what I'm cleaning. It works much better than brake cleaner spray and your lungs will thank you.

  • @rydplrs71
    @rydplrs71 Před 5 lety +1

    The only thing I cannot agree with is adjustable wrenches. I refer to them as nut rounders. I do own two, but couldn’t tell you the last time I used them.
    For regular wrenches craftsman has nice 26 piece sets that are regularly on sale for $49. They come with quality ignition wrenches, not the stamped junk ones, and they go smaller and larger then any other affordable options. For $100 you get metric and standard and you have the correct size so you don’t need the adjustable ones.

    • @Isavetractors
      @Isavetractors  Před 5 lety +1

      Adjustable ones don't round the corners when you use them right ;)

    • @rydplrs71
      @rydplrs71 Před 5 lety +1

      isavetractors a skill not required if you have the right wrench. 😂 I’ve said oops a few times, and seen many others do worse, so I try to avoid it. For carrying one wrench where your tools aren’t available they do work great. 👍
      I did offer the alternative set that comes with a case, or I keep in roll ups. Grab the metric or std set and lay it out beside the project. Have the wrong size, having the next size sitting in order it’s as quick to swap as adjust an adjustable.

    • @RustyZipper
      @RustyZipper Před 5 lety +2

      Nice to have handy in case you are feeling too lazy to get the second end wrench from the drawer or just need it to hold one bolt that could be a 5/8, 3/4, 7/8 or 11/16. Pro Tip- I always buy SAE adjustable wrenches, not a fan of the metric version

    • @rydplrs71
      @rydplrs71 Před 5 lety +1

      Rusty Zipper I’ll admit grabbing the ratchet wrenches too if there might be need for two. If it’s in the jumbo range I take a pipe wrench before adjustable unless appearance is important. I’d rather have tooth marks to rounded corners as a worst case.

  • @thelibertyworkshop2952

    One of the first things you're gonna notice while working with these older garden tractors is that the metric crap stays in the toolbox ... That and the build quality of the machines themselves ...
