This traditional Hungarian grape press has a tight layout with awkward traditional features that must be included in the design to make the building comfortable. This video will show you how I turned this tricky building into a well proportioned comfortable home. This unique house design is perfect for those looking for ideas to renovate traditional buildings while learning about the architect's design process.

This channel is going places! One design highlight after the other. I’m constantly in shock how beautiful these plans turn out to be.
Thank you so much!
I agree and I really hope these are turning into commissions for you. My sister does some drawings for clients as an add on to her property business. Unfortunately there are a number of clients that seem to push, push and push to get far more out of the brief than originally agreed
Thank you for sharing, Gemma. Stunning is a perfect description. A beautiful renovation that one must see to believe. Kudos. Many blessings
Hear hear!
Totally agree!
ive said it before but i will say it again. this is the kind of thing that makes me love architecture.
Is this AI?
@@meggibson3791Is this AI?
Certainly, but add transom windows all the way around!
Yours are by far the best solutions I've seen out there to adapt existing buildings into living spaces. Your creativity never conflicts with such respect for the pre-existing structures. I found that amazing! I hope one day I can buy and old small building and hire you to turn it my forever home.
I’m utterly obsessed with this channel
Stunning design Gemma. You never fail to impress me and to fit 2 bedrooms into this tiny home is a major achievement. I love it and hope the viewer who sent it in to you takes your advice and completes this renovation and lets us see the results once complete.
Off to rewatch the video again as I always have to watch your videos at least 5 or 6 times to see all the clever things you do.
Haha, so I am not the only one who does that 😂
You are quite brilliant as an architect. I love all your designs! ♥️👍🏻
Thank you! 😊
This is the first design of yours I have seen. You create magic, just beautiful. ❤😊🎉Congratulations 🎊
I had subscribed to your channel after watching your last video, then i went on to watch all the previous content. And i can't explain how many times i have thought about when you will be uploading a new project!😊
Haha thanks!
@@gemmawheelerjust finished watching this one. What a pleasant and lovely design!
Terrific stuff, girl..!
When I win the lottery (which will be any day now) I'll have you design/build us a place. 🎉
you turned it into a jewel box of a house! bravo!
Oh that’s a lovely description, thanks!
@@gemmawheeler I would move in in a heartbeat 🥰
Amazing that a building for pressing grapes has so much architectural style and character!
That was the norm back in those days.
Anyone who was rich enough to build such a thing, did it with style.
Wow, another truly amazing project for a house that seemed quite impossible to make sense! I love the opaque glass in the shower and the roof windows. I would LOVE to live in this house. Very well done. Can't wait for the next one!
Thank you so much!
What a lovely reimagining of a fine old building.
That ground floor entrance would definitely be my library, workspace and gaming area!
With a studio/office!
This might be a little outside your wheelhouse (no pun intended (well, maybe a bit)) but I'd love to see your approach to an apartment building, since they are, in a way, a bunch of tiny houses in one building.
If anyone sends me one that catches my eye, I’m up for it!
I look forward to your videos!
Such a beautiful and creative use of the space, and I love how you respected the features of the original structure.
You are an actual genius. I just don't understand how your brain works like this! You're amazing!
I am stunned how you respect the historian look of this building and still turn it into a modern, attractive living space. Great job. Can't get enough of your videos!
Perfect ingenious solution! Bravo, Gemma.
Hungary was my fathers home land. Your video provides some drone footage which I truly am grateful for. I have not seen Hungary for myself yet, but it is on my bucket list. Lovely design! Thank you🌸V
I am an American expat living in Munich and this building reminds me of the cute little outbuildings on the Nymphenburg Palace grounds. I love it.
Wow another fantastic design .
It's amazing what can be done with historical structures. Took an abandoned building and created a beautiful home
I LOVE that house... That it is in a rural location makes it even better. It's so verdant and richly green.
What an intelligent design converting the press into a home. It is well thought out and is a great argument for using an architect in remodeling.
Outstanding! I love the roof lights and tucking the stairs into the corner.
I fell in love with this house upon first glance. It's gorgeous. With your ideas and design I'll now dream of this house. I love it so much. It's a treasure.
I am sooo happy to see another brilliant design by you! I am a Hungarian, living in the USA. The location, re-emagined function speaks to me in so many ways. LOVE IT!!!!
Wow, I thought this would be a tough one, but Gemma's proposal is really solid. I love the top floor bedroom and roof light!
The hand drawn sketches combined with the computer generated renderings really demonstrate the clarity of the design and its intentions in creating a new space. The narrative is also technical and simple enough for a layperson to understand, but not overly verbose as so many other architects can be. Much respect from a fellow architect from Fiji 👍😎🤙
I'd love to live in a house like this, great design! Looking forward to move videos from you.
It is easy to forget in this DIY culture why we need architects and why they are worth their money - or at least you are! Another beautiful and well-thought out solution!
These are great design challenges. I’ve paused the vid before you revealed your design. I then designed up my own solution and then compare to what you’ve done. This one was quite the puzzle.
That's a great idea!
These short videos are beautiful exemplars of humane architecture. A joy to watch the creative process and the beautiful results. Thank you.
I love your use thoughtfulness in use of space, design, and function. Love your astethics!
The ‘before’ pic shows a cutie pie. Very architectural!!! Perfect property to improve; I’ll bet someone loved it!!😌♥️
Great solutions,Gemma, especially the window upstairs ..I live in Hungary and like those kind of houses...personally I would prefer old branches instead of glass upstairs at the vide
It would be a wonderful, romantic home for a couple. A dark green color for the external of the house would also work, to blend in with the surrounding trees and nature.
As a Hungarian, I approve this design ❤
Totally love the inside architecture! The only thing I wouldn’t change is the outside in it’s original colors and even it’s slightly broken down aspect that I always love. The contrast with the modern interior doesn’t feel to disconnected to me. Do love the added openings and build-in bench on the terrasse. I wonder how they are planning to heat it and if adding a stove would be a necessity to keep heating cost down in winters?
Agreed.
As always - amazing.
Sometimes it’s impossible to hide genius.
Darn you are good! Both technically, colour-wise, keeping original features and enhancing them, and incorporating inside and outside in a meaningful way- and even finding space for cabinets/closets where there seemingly is none.
Brilliant work caramba! The staircase is genius. Thanks for sharing your talents with us!
Stunning ❤
Love it! ♥️ Well done again Gemma 🙌🏻
Thank you :)
I would absolutely live here! The spaces are divided up so well!
Great conversion! The upper floor would make an awesome studio!
Your work is infused with such thoughtfulness, thank you for sharing!
Look at you, getting sponsors... good job!
Yes, yes you did! I love almost everything you do, but you’ve outdone yourself with this one! Brava!❤❤
Tied for favorite with the garage/urban alley house - just wonderful!
Superb designing. I couldn’t believe the concept, it was beyond anything I have seen. Practical, and resourceful I loved it. Well done! Thank you for sharing.
OMG I'm binge watching all of your content, I really love your amazing work and vision 😍. Congratulation this is gorgeous.
Another clever and thoughtful design idea👍🏼
Absolutely gorgeous 🎉🎉🎉🎉
so beautiful! I love what you come up with
I’m watching from Hungary, love the area of Lake Balaton! It’s wonderful to see your solutions! It would be amazing to see these kind of houses in your style!
Love your channel! ❤
Amazing! Thanks!
Elegant as usual...brilliant
Very well thought out
I've been watching your channel for a while now. I love how you explain your design choices very clearly and mention other options you have cpnaidered in the designing process.
You always consider every single detail very carefully, but you never forget to consider the overall picture either. Kudos for your excellent work!
I noticed that you usually focus on small residential buildings. Would you also feel like tackling projects with the opposite problem - too much space. How would you allow for intuitive circulation and how would you make them feel warm and homely?
Also, I would love to see you design buildings with different purposes: How about schools, religious sites, hospitals, hotels, train stations, office spaces or even museums?
Ah interesting, someone sent me a circular building actually which got me thinking about that kind of thing. Hopefully I’ll get to it because I have some ideas.
In terms of the type of architecture, the majority of my experience is in residential design so that’s where I focus. And I keep it small to make it possible to keep the videos coming. But I never know what I’m going to do next so now you’ve planted the seed of the idea…?!
I love your videos. Brilliant
We actually own one of these press houses in this same area of Hungary and have spent the last 11 months renovating it. Our ground floor is an office/spare bed/cinema room. The 1st floor is our studio apartment with 3 piece bath. We haven't done anything to the attic space yet but will take inspriation from your roof. Our wine house is also fully loaded with smart technology, security and whole home audio (inside and out) all controlled with Control4. Ours in also painted white. These tiny houses are so lovely and well worth the conversion to be able to live/visit/stay in one of the prettiest parts of Europe. ❤
Yes! I've been eagerly waiting for this all month! Keep up the great work Gemma 😁
Thanks!
Another lovely and sensitive design, Gemma. It is so nice that you kept most of the more modern design elements on the inside and retained the traditional elements of the outside. It's very beautiful and elegant.
How interesting and unique, and such a practical and liveable small home.
Me and my partner adore you content it’s beautiful and so soothing and honestly we can’t wait for you to post ❤
Love watching your videos.. and of course your talent at what you do! Keep up the amazing work!!!
Thank you! Will do!
Brava! This is out of the box creative! Elegant
Brilliant design ..... BEAUTIFUL!
Brilliant!!!!! Always so well thought out. Thanks
Glad you liked it!
Your design is sheer genius. I would love to live there. And how brilliant to pair this with sponsorship from an artisanal wine merchant!
Thanks. Beautifully conceived and presented. You make the architectural process accessible to the layman with your soft personal style and non-technical language. Bravo!
Thank you so much!
Beautiful and subtle. Love the attic window - sublime.
Absolutely stunning! So serene and lovely 💕
Thank you for showing us those cute little buildings!
I really love the look and function of this building.
So so talented - Gemma, your design clarity/orientation, spatial awareness, and thoughtfulness in finding solutions is truly remarkable. Thank you for sharing your craft and articulation.
I can't believe what a gorgeous house you designed. And fitting 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms? That's pure witchcraft!
I absolutely love this house! The combination of keeping the historical charm and adding modern elements is beautiful! I live there in a heartbeat:)
This is beautiful! Such a clever design. You did an amazing job, Gemma.
Love it! Cheers
Amazing design Gemma!!!
Thank you! 😊
I really love your creativity in making storage solutions in small spaces. Your designs are absolutely so beautiful and give people a lot of ideas. You are absolutely fabulous!❤
So glad I found your work on here - this is my favourite youtube channel! ♥
Love this take Gemma! Just a thought as it appears as if this building is actually in the beginning stages of rebirth, maybe introducing storage of some kind behind the bed in the upper level above the veranda roof? Could then reorient the room to take advantage of the longer wall, though the mezzanine may be diminished
Yay a new concept! What a cool project. I really like hearing your thought process behind the design. Somehow I love staircases so thank you for this one. 😊 My only hesitation would be the window in the roof. I think I would like it to be more inconspicuous, to really let the beautiful traditional outside shine on its own. Thanks again for your awesome work!
I love the attic window
Absolutely stunning and genious solutions!!
As always I enjoy looking over your shoulder during the design phase. Especially like the glass wall for the shower.
I would love to see what your clients actually do with the plans you provide. It would make for an interesting episode.
I'd love to see some ideas for small homes for families. A lot of your projects appear to fit one or two people, but I love your ethos and would appreciate learning what might be appropriate for a family. We are currently designing a home and I'm afraid it's too big!
This is one of my favorite designs far - especially the staircase!!
Nicely done. Peeling back the roof makes the building reminiscent of a 19th century observatory. A soft, natural white elevates the exterior.
You do really terrific work Gemma!
You are very thoughtful, and eschew trendiness in favour of what is truly useful. I also appreciate that you seem to be able to really visualise what living in these spaces would be like. A skill which maybe surprisingly, many architects don't seem to have.
I always enjoy seeing these plans, and hope they generate some work for you.
Love that you explain why you made the decisions you made in transforming this building into living space. I am in awe.
That staircase is beautiful.
A walk through post war suburbs in Budapest shows houses painted with natural oxides. Red iron oxide, yellow ochre, titanium oxide, whiting, etc. That local midcentury colour palate could be interesting to bring into contemporary design ideas.
Beautiful Design
That attic is just awesome. I may convert that to an office with a Murphy and a half loo
Really imaginative design ideas and I love them.
Can't wait for more
Gorgeous and thoughtful design! And I like how you describe your reasons for designing the space. What will and won’t work ✨🤗💜🧠🏚️🏠
