This is how I would convert this old upper storey Shepherds Hut into a luxurious 2 bed courtyard home. The aim is to connect 2 buildings across an enclosed courtyard: one is an existing open-sided shelter; the other is a basic mountain cabin above a store room with no internal staircase. I use Milanote for inspiration for the renovation of the barns at my country house, it is fantastic.
I had a look at Milanote on the back of your recommendation and wow, it's amazing. I've been using it for all the concept development for designing clients gardens and sharing first ideas with them, but also for more mundane tasks like invoicing - I can get all the relevant info up on a board, note down all the things I need to bill etc without having umpteen windows open on my Macbook. It is such a great solution for a creative, visually-led mind :o)
I didn’t know I had a favorite contemporary architect until I found your channel. ❤
It's so clear in my head: how a family could throw a birthday party on a sunny afternoon in this house: with kids playing in the different courtyards, adults lounging in the living room and reading nook, teenagers segregating themselves in the bedrooms, and several dogs running around, food being laid out on the table, and lots of fun. Your design reminds me of my husband's family home back in Mexico City, where every weekend was a celebration of family and food circling the central courtyard. Thank you, Gemma!
I also thought about a big family party in there!
Excellent design! Fits together perfectly. 😊
Wish I had a family and a house
I see Gemma, I click
Me too!
....and me!
I’ve given this a thumbs up but that’s completely inadequate, this is stunning. Thank you so much for sharing it.
I often wish that I could Like more than once & this is one of them! All of her reimagined designs are Amazing but this one is my favorite so far!
all ten fingers!!!! this space is so amazing!
Tricky space to work with and the most clever I've seen so far I think. The story of the man and his family brings another level of interest for me. I get a sense of the people this is built for which helps me imagine this as a working house, rather than simply an interesting design project in the abstract.
The humanity brings out the soul in the design
Gemma - “Great creativity is dissecting the existing to find the marvelous.” Exceptional work.
Good one! 👌🏻
Every one of this is better than the last. Watching your process is pure joy.
Gemma: Oh were I a rich man, I would both morally and financially support your life's work. You are a subtle genius in your thoughts and processes, but also grounded in your practicality of the uses of space, function, and light. . . .you are gifted beyond most imaginations. What a joy it is for this old man to witness your creativity, and get lost in your fabulous video representations. You are truly blessed. Thank you for sharing.
Gemma you have surpassed yourself in this latest design, a truly amazing design. My new favourite, but knowing you I'll change my mind at your next one. 😊
Haha thank you!
Absolutely! I've loved all of these designs but this one is very special & my favorite! I do so hope that the people who own these bases of dreams that she creates hire her to complete closure. If it were me, I would have a hard time not seeing at least some of them finally come to reality! I've always wondered if she gets regular people suggesting "Oh I know of a tiny structure that would be difficult for even you to redesign into comfortable, usable, practical, livable space!" and then she goes to talk to the owner about her ideas? OR Do the owners contact & hire her as one of several, as in "We are taking bids on a redesign contract, would you be interested?" OR is this just a fun hobby, kinda like "The Simms" (if that's the case, she should quit her day job because, she is really good at this "hobby")
Hey! I’ll answer your questions! So for this particular project, the owner appointed me to propose a design for the site. I’m able to work internationally by offering projects up to concept design stage only and then provide consultation support thereafter. People also put forward their buildings as video suggestions to me and I create designs unappointed, but on the understanding that the design will be paid for if the owner decides to proceed with it. Sometimes I’m sent projects of properties for sale and if I think it’ll make a good subject I may do a design simply for CZcams, possibly with payment by a brand partner but often without. My aim is to promote wider access to bespoke design and to practice my profession for a broader audience than simply a few individuals. I love what I do and I care how people live and how buildings and materials are valued so hope to simply share that and see where it goes!
I thoroughly enjoy seeing your designs and how you come up with them. Thank you from Oregon.
I so hope the owner of this property goes ahead with your proposals, it is a truly stunning makeover and it would be wonderful to see it in reality, as good as your renders are. Keep up the great work Gemma!
i have to say this is probably my favorite video so far.not just a brilliant use of the existing structures, but if i was i was building something new from scratch using reclaimed stone ect i would love this design,no matter where you stand in this building it will have great composition due to all the angles of walls ect.
gemma, i can't express how much this design has resonated with me and the way you have honoured the history of the property and respected and incorporated the owner's wishes, has created a true masterpiece. i have always loved the concept of an inner courtyard that is accessible to the entire dwelling and your design is perhaps the most elegant realization of that idea that i have ever seen. i know that i am going to be watching this video many, many times.
Thank you so much! I’m so glad you enjoyed it.
Having watched every video you have released and being impressed over and over, I feel this might be your most sophisticated and complete design yet. You have taken an awkward building site and transformed it to become a home that recognizes the history of the building while meeting the needs of the client. Bravo!
You are my architect of choice because you focus on bringing light into a space. Even on a grey and rainy day, this property would be light-filled!
One again, sheer genius. I would live gladly-much more than gladly-in every space I’ve seen you design. If on,y I could turn you loose on my home!
I am always fascinated by your architecture and problem solving skills. Thank you for sharing them with us.
You’re very welcome
Your work is amazing. Thank you for sharing your wonderful ideas.
My pleasure! Thank you for watching!
You are a genius and I can't open your videos quickly enough and channel your creativity, imagination and expertise.
I love, love, love your logical and creative approach to architecture and the outcomes. I wish I could resurrect houses with you. Let me go play some lottery and I will give you a call, when I win :)
Absolutely stunning! I can't click fast enough when I see you've posted a new video.
😂 thank you!
Same here! I look forward to see a genius at work everytime.
This is so impressive, but also so lovely to sit back and enjoy (and to pretend I'm gonna live there haha). Kudos!!
absolutely sympathetic to the building (as ever) and utterly gorgeous (as ever)
You have proved yet again that the exponential growth of creativity is a combination of talent and eclectic practice. That seems a bit pretentious what I have written, but your work and designs and ideas are an inspiration to anyone who wants to develop his/her creativity. This is a wonderful piece of work. Thank you so much.
Always admire your architect designs with old buildings. But the only changes I would suggest is to use a slightly darker wood or a light grey shade, instead of the light shade for the new walls, IMHO, it would 'tie in' with the old wood and stone. And my suggestion in the guest room is to install a murphy bed so the guest room could be multi-purpose, and could also used as a study or another reading room or a play area for children. I love the wild flowers on the roof top and how the courtyard is kept spacious, even though there is an indoor corridor (with large windows and doors) connecting the two buildings. I always wanted to live in a house with an inner courtyard, and now this is definitely a dream house.
Great thoughts! Thank you so much for sharing them!
That is literally my dream house: a renovated cabin in my home land. Just perfect.
This has to be one of the best designs I have ever seen. Thank you for being able to create such lively homes out of these tiny spaces.
This design is stunningly beautiful. Truly amazing, how you worked both open airy visual lightness with absolute privacy from the street & property surroundings. Hope your client is able to take advantage of your genius work :)
OMG Gemma I have to buy a ruined stone hut so you can redesign it for me! Watch this space! Lovin it ❤❤
Wow you have done it again Gemma, fantastic addition that will look as if it was there all along.
I love how I always have to pay attention to rewind at the end of the videos before the suggestions of new vids gets in the way of my clumsy fingers (on my phone). I think, “I need to see that again!”
This is beautiful. That hallway is brilliant. Those pentagons! The regular features. 💕🏡
I love interior courtyard designs! ❤ I feel this design style would also suit a more urban setting rowhouse with garage type structure with a contained garden courtyard between two living areas.
I'm a carpenter and mason - and that's a building I'd love to build. Super design Gemma - very very well done.
You never disappoint, Gemma! This is brilliant. Love the story behind this village as well, and they couldn't have found a better architect to update and honor the old shepherd's hut.
Absolutely INCREDIBLE design!! Kept all the original features and design elements and used them in the new additions. The attention to detail and how the house will be lived in is amazing. The roof garden and linking walkway that can pretty much open completely. Everything has been thought of! The master bedroom is spectaclular with the opening shutters and skylight! Not a single thing to fault. 😍😍😍
Really an exceptional design. I love it. The only red flag I have is about the summer heat. The sunny spot and the living room would get boiling hot without blinds or shutters even with air conditioning.
Thanks! I agree that blinds may be worth having. Ultimately though the client knows the property intimately and knows how that area will feel in summer and capturing that sun to the living area was a key part of the brief.
I say it every time … you are a genius Gemma! It’s beautiful ♥️
An appealing story behind the family love of the property--and what a challenging property it is. Seeing how you rose to the challenge, and created such an elegant solution to the brief, I now believe you can do anything Gemma. So much beauty! I can happily imagine wandering through each of the spaces, and easing into life there.
What a delightful combination of traditional, rustic features and modern elements. The use of space is creative and practical. The overall feeling is a wonderful paradox--cozy and open. It's my favorite of your projects so far.
I love architectures! Your talent for taking small historical buildings into beautiful living spaces is amazing! Thank you for sharing!!!
Wow! What a way to think outside the box! So fun to watch how you create something beautiful out of almost nothing! 👏🏻
This is by far your best in my humble opinion. I love the cleve links between the two parts of the house and the hight of the original exposed beam ceilings. I’d be happy to live in that house. Well done!
I honestly gasped when you first showed the design. You are so talented!!
I never get tired of your projects. Always something to energize my eyes with. I feel the bridges you create between our past and our future and it is nice.
Thank you for showing your process in this video!
Absolutely brilliant! Spacious, cozy and calm.
What a treat to watch your brilliant designs on a rainy Sunday afternoon😊. I couldn’t click quick enough.
It is so interesting to learn how you problem solve. When you were listing the owner’s wish list it felt very overwhelming, but you accomplished it and with a beautiful design. You are very gifted. Thank you for sharing your abilities with us. It’s like watching Beethoven write symphonies. Truly thankful for you, I am learning so much.
I love the feeling of this space. Super functional yet keeping its soul
Love this! The extra courtyard to work around the different elevations is cool. Love the living roof too. Thanks for sharing!
Another example of excellent planning and use of space, Gemma, you are so gifted in these things. I love watching your design process and seeing your functional and creative results.
Wow. I mean just wow. What an amazing job you’ve done Gemma
The BONES of this property, mind blowing!
Thats one of your best ones yet! I love what you did with that, with the connecting building. The rooftop garden. All the windows. Absolutely beautiful.
Just beautiful! I am in awe of your imagination and thought process. This home is a dream that I would happily live in !
This may be my favourite so far.... (till your next video) Bravo GW !!
I was so afraid that there would be this overbearing addition but this design elevated the space. So conducive to entertaining family yet intimate for daily use. You kept the uniqueness of the space and brought it up several notches. I love this design!
A stunning integration of the traditional home and modern upgrade. Very peaceful and welcoming.
What an absolutely charming and sentimental omage to the past and a nod to the future. Thanks also for acknowledging Milanote. It really is a powerful tool for all those creative things that rattle around in the head and need a place to rest.
I enjoy your wonderful designs and the calm voice in which you lead us through you thoughts and decisions .Thank you for sharing!
I have no words and no notes. This is an amazing transformation and I'd gladly live in a house like this myself. Absolutely stellar!
That master bedroom is sublime. Gorgeous!
I am always so excited when you post 🎉❤😁 and never disapointed. You keep on surprising with such an awesome ideas. I really love how you extended the stairs and new place for wood.
Another winner! 🏆
Pure perfection! Every project exceeds the previous. I hope this is actually executed! Beautiful!
What a beautiful and creative space. I really like it and wish I had one similar in an odd shape. Your design is really grand for this space.
i really wish you'd come out with a full tv show, and we could see people implement your designs :)
I get very excited every time I see you've released a new video. This one is outstanding! Watching the shooting stars in the mountains from that skylight would be an absolute delight! Thank you, Gemma!
Wonderful, please don’t wait so long in between videos!
Haha I assure you I’m not waiting! Each one is hugely labour intensive :)
This design is so imaginative and clever, a really beautiful home. Probably my favourite one so far!
Gemma, I am in awe at your ability. Simply outstanding. ❤❤❤
This might be my favorite design of yours. Would absolutely live there.
Gemma, your designs are chock a block with thoughtful details that consider all the structural, aesthetic, and practical angles. Now onto my habitual second viewing. Your videos deserve it!
Not an easy one to reconfigure, Gemma but you pulled it off spectacularly. I love how you focus firstly on the sun direction so as to maximise the light coming into a property.
It makes me want to buy a ruin just so I can get you to design it. Nothing short of Awesome!
As usual, brilliant design. I'm your fan.
Love it. Love being able to keep the history and the architecture in place and still make it a functional home for a family. I would move there in an instance. Good work as always , greetings from Texas.
Thank you for sharing all of the historical details of the family. This might be my favorite of your many visionary designs. I just adore a courtyard; this feels so open and yet so intimate while connecting to all spaces. Wonderful design!
Quite wonderful, thank you.
I would never have thought of running the link between the two sections through the middle of the courtyard, but it works brilliantly.
Love, love, love this. And this channel. I learn so much from you and your designs.
I think this is my favorite so far! I love it so much. What an inheritance this man has.
So creative and versatile! I especially love that master bedroom with the rafters and windows looking onto green.
Gemma, you are amazing. I absolutely love every aspect of this home. Outstanding concept 👍🏾💙
Yet another wonderful design!
Such a unique building to begin a project on. Your designs are just so amazing, that you have the visions to make dilapidated structures beautiful homes. Beautifully done!
WOW…has to be your best one yet! I’d love to build this place for myself!
Stunning, a dream home ..like a hidden gem in Provence ..oh my God
Appreciate the promo for Milanote. I registered! Also, odd shaped building, inner courtyard, rehabilitated village; and a wickedly clever and sensitive designer, leads me to replay this video multiple times and daydream the rest of the day! Definitely my favorite architect, GW!
Wow, this looks so much like a modern hanok (traditional Korean house) to me. Love it.
I've enjoyed your imaginative and functional home designs for months since discovering your channel, and am always delighted to see a new video has released. This design today was absolutely wonderful and I fell deeply in love with the idea of living in a home such as this. Thank you very much!
Award-winning design! So joyous and meaningful. You are my favorite architect on YT. ❤
This is a stunning design. I could see my self living there.
You are exceptionally talented and I applaud you on your true consideration of the people living in a space as well as the history of a building and its environment. Love it Gemma.
Now THAT is wonderful. Really wonderful. What a talented woman you are.
Wonderful visualization of possibilities! I'd say the only thing you missed is the window seat not have a cushion, a throw for warmth, a little shelf for a teapot and mug of a tea. Could have been so heavenly to have a couple or more cushionie pillows. And the final touch? Well a book or magazine lying half-open face-down on the recently vacated cushion.
How lovely a place! I bet the owners are thrilled by your suggestions, and likely to incorporate most of this. Would love to see how he goes about it and see the finished house. ( is that possible?)
Stun-ning! Simply stunning!
This is your best one yet! I love how thoughtfully you incorporate old and new. Amazing space ❤
I love the roof garden aspect!
Brilliant design and problem solving. Poetry! I think it one of you best.
