  • not the usual kind of video i upload; this is my final creative project for my elective course on the punk/diy subculture! i had it as unlisted earlier today, but since i'm happy with the result and spent a lot of time on it, i decided to make the video public :) please let me know what you think and if you'd be interested in more videos like this! there's hardly any information about this topic on the internet but it was something i wanted to pursue and i discovered a lot~ it's shocking how much k-pop is influenced by punk, right?
    twt: @DE55ERT
anyway, my finals are over now!! i'll try to post an a.c.e video this week, thank you for being patient :) and i hope everyone watching is doing well and staying healthy!

Honestly Taylor, you’re always a step ahead when it comes to fun facts, but you really outdid yourself here. My dad is a punk musician, and that lineage has played a huge role in who I am as a singer and person. The fact that you managed to sprinkle in key details of the scene while weaving it with K-pop knowledge perfectly illustrates why I love both so much. Thanks for posting this and great job!

What a lovely insight on a rare and such a creative topic. I love how you didn't constrict punk in a boxed music genre but showed how it is so fluidly used in influencing not just K-pop songs but also outfits . This is the video that I wanted to watch ever since I first liked kpop about a decade ago. I only listened to rock music and punk was my favorite genre, and when I got into kpop, I always had the feeling that I kind of didn't change the way that I enjoyed music, I felt like everything that I liked before I could find in kpop. I always knew there was punk in kpop but it was really hard for me to put a finger on it. Your research is amazing and I would easily watch an one hour version of this. You truly owned the format and the editing and I'm glad I subscribed long ago to get myself some good content ace edits but now here I am getting an excellent video essay. 🥰

I know i'm a year late to this video but this was so fun to watch! I remember i was in my "punk phase" when kpop first became known in my country (with the 2gen groups, so around 2009-2010?) i didn't get it then, i thought kpop seemed to "cute" and "manufactured" , but now that i am in my "kpop phase" , and after seeing this i get it totally! kpop, just like punk, is a way of finding a sense of self and belonging to a community outside of what's conventionally popular. It really goes to show that at the end of the day we all have more similarities than differences

This is a really cool analysis! My family, including extended, grew up on punk and the hard rock scene in both Spanish and English. My emo phase (yikes) was influenced by it as well, so im also a fan of metal, atl., pop-punk, and classic rock. I've been exposed to the areas since I was a baby lol. Im still an avid fan of all of those just as much as I am of bubblegum kpop. So this was a big merge of my worlds. I agree with the punk styling carrying over into more aggressive kpop sound. However, the behavior doesn't seem to. Punk doesn't mean only disrespect, but kinda disruption. I think its ironic that the idol image is so important, but they want to dress them and have them pretend to be delinquents for mvs. The teen age rebellion concept is so overused, yet none of those idols would even dare to look at someone of the opposite gender. Kpop really takes poser punk to a new level. If a song has a second of guitar, the concept immediately means aggressive and scary. Under cover and savage by ace are some of the only ones I've seen that have the sound to back it up. The punk agenda doesn't always mean just music. Genderless clothes are a concept within. so im glad you mentioned ace and their clothes! Punk is going against the norm, which means in almost any way. As well as accepting those that are different and giving anyone who wants it,, a home. i think ace have been doing that well. (thats gushy and off track i love them sorry back to it) Dreamcatcher as well, but ironically they're not styled as such and are more styled to fit a Gothic theme. But to be fair, my girls are probably the closest kpops gonna get to goth anyways. Its
So cool to dissect this all, I never would have thought about it
This was really well done. I hope you do more analysis in the future! :)

What about mod influence on K-pop? I wouldn't be surprised if it was a small but significant source of stuff that the companies behind these groups would appropriate.
As far as Crass goes, they were actually hippies. They openly said that they were involved in the hippie movement, especially the free festival circuit.
