MINJUNG Art is inseparable from the political context of South Korea, where the democratization movement violently confronted the military dictatorship in the 80s. ⟪A New Day of Unification Dawning at the Foot of Paekdu Mountain⟫ is a large hanging painting co-created by LEE Sang Ho and JEON Jeong Ho, representative artists of Gwangju MINJUNG Art, and was destroyed by fire when the two were detained on charges of violating the National Security Act; it was recreated in 2005. Since then, they have been building their own worlds as artists, with JEON focusing on environmental issues and LEE on history.
