Edna (The women in the red dress with the funky voice) is played by Harvey Firestein. He originated the role on Broadway as well as being a professional drag queen. Harvey is Broadway royalty. With Tonys. Interesting hearing coaches critiques of legendary performers (not just this channel) because they don't know the background. While understandable, it shows how maybe it's not always about being "perfect".

Yeah the thing going on with his voice is he's speaking through both sets of vocal cords. Normally we only speak with one but for him, when his voice changed as a kid, his second set of vocal cords was turned on and he can't shut it off. He's just always speaking through both.

That's legendary Harvey Fierstein, original Edna on Broadway. That's just how he's always sounded, it's part of his charm lol. I first saw him in Mrs. Doubtfire, playing Robin William's brother. He's hilarious but yes, John Travolta (the movie version's Edna) is the stronger singer, for sure. Harvey playing Edna again was more iconic and nostalgic bc he brought the role to life and was an honor to have the OG Edna back. I will say they did their best in this production to layer or cover his voice and maybe gave him a few less singing parts than originally bc his voice has become even more growly as time has gone on. But it was fun to see him in role that got so much notoriety on Broadway.

So, the thing with Harvey Fierstein's voice? He was born with naturally thick vocal chords, and an overdeveloped vestibular fold in one of them. That's just how his voice has always sounded. He was in his early 60s here, wearing a 25 pound fat suit, a gown and heels, and has been singing live for about two hours. He wrote the part too. It's hard to believe he doesn't blow his throat out every night, but that's just his voice. He's sounded like an old smoker his whole life (smokers get that husky voice because the smoke thickens the chords, so they vibrate lower & slower, I'm sure you know this- he just happens to come by it naturally, and he can work with his extremely limited range).

Also Ariana was told to sing like she does on the radio. When she does musical theatre songs she typically enunciates more cause that’s what she is trained in but they wanted her to sound like she does on her own music instead of her typical voice. A lot of the singing is character singing. It's not like they are all bad singers. Jennifer Hudson is a wonderful singer, but she was trying to sing like her character talks. Harvey Firestein has that gravelly voice in real life. He is not a singer but that's the whole part of his character as Edna. Anyway . . .

  • @hyperextendedbrooklin3963

I’m sorry but how are you going to say “finally someone who knows what they’re doing”. Ariana grande literally got famous for being on Broadway. I really think you need to do research on people before you comment stuff because this isn’t the first video I’ve seen where you have commented ignorant things about what singers can and can’t do. And also your “fun facts” at the bottom of the screen for some things are far from correct. Also some comments on general that are completely wrong you haven’t done research in that have actually contributed to certain musicians death threats throughout their career.
