- George Washington died at home in his bed on December 14, 1799. What was the cause of his death? Jeremy Ray, Mount Vernon's director of history interpretation, explains what modern historians believe killed the first president of the United States.

When I toured Mt. Vernon about 30 years ago, as we were standing in George Washington's bedroom, the tour guide told us Washington died of diphtheria, a bacterial disease that inflames mucous membranes and can create a false membrane coating the throat that makes it difficult to swallow and to breathe and eventually chokes the person to death.
Totally left out the blood letting that was apparently still practiced at this time. He died because he had no blood left in his body
@@aryanshverma9723 what tpr311 is true he also died from a throat infection
It almost sounds to me like he could have had an acute illness due to asthma too. Think about all of the battles he fought in the harsh winters and conditions at that time! God Bless him for all he did for our country, one of the greatest Presidents in history! 🇺🇸💖🙏🇺🇸
I guess sometimes it is ok to keep people waiting😶
"Tis well".
Last words of 1st ‘tis well
Suffocating to death sounds like a very painful way to go. I think he said "Tis Well" so he could comfort Martha.
Interesting fact. When the news that Washington had died reached Europe Napoleon ordered 10 days of mourning in France while the entire Royal Navy lowered all flags to half mast.
A mighty mighty man.
I read the doctors blood let him 3 times in a very short time and he was so weak from loss of blood, he passed away.
The medical practice was pretty different back then! Did you know one attending physician proposed a plan to "resuscitate" the recently deceased body of George Washington? www.mountvernon.org/george-washington/death/death-defied-dr-thorntons-radical-idea-of-bringing-george-washington-back-to-life/
@Shantal Blaze See my response to Peter.
@@mountvernon I understand there was a younger doctor present who suggested a tracheotomy, but the older doctors considered that too radical and overruled him. Is there any evidence of that?
Good information and easy to understand.
God bless America 🇺🇸
We were told on our Mount Vernon tour that he died from pneumonia
A simple trachea could have saved his life.
That was 1800 idiot!!
@@Paranormal_Gaming_ 1799 and they have been trachea's since the middle ages.
A younger doctor wished to do a tracheostomy but the older doctors refused.
Might it have been an allergic reaction to something in the trees? I've had similar responses to bee stings and shell fish. Thank God for Epipens.
💕George Washington
S Dolan thank you
If only it did not happens in the first place......
He didn’t have a disease right he had a bacterial infection in his throat?
God bless you!
Isn't Mount Vernon haunted by his ghost today?🤔👻
We do have several reported incidents of ghost sightings at Mount Vernon: www.mountvernon.org/preservation/mount-vernon-ladies-association/mount-vernon-through-time/ghost-stories/
I've never, ever seen a ghost and never hope to see one, but I can surely tell you this: I'd rather see than be one. But if did have to see one, it would be really cool if it was Geo. Washington's.
@@stanleykparker I haven't too. But I've heard plenty of stories & my oldest sister bought a haunted house back in '09
@@mountvernon You should let one of the ghost hunting shows on tv come to Mt. Vernon. It would be so cool. Cuz you know George comes back to visit his property.
Maybe he had an allergic reaction?
It's kinda sad to hear this. How many of todays doctors have heard this and wished if only they could time travel just to treat that. Just one time. But as the good General said.
'Tis well'. amazing man
There was a young physician there, not one of Washington's physicians though. He told Washington's doctors about a new procedure called a tracheostomy. They didn't take him seriously. If that was done he probably would have survived.
George Washington: m dieying george washington: my throat doctor: eats tacos. George washington: tis well
Probably a combination of throat infection and bloodletting. Many people don't know this but there was a younger, third physician there. He suggested a new procedure called a tracheotomy. Washington's physicians declined.
Possibly strep?
TIS WELL
Correct question would be what didn't George Washington die from?
They bled him out and he died of lack of blood.
Actually Gorge Washington leached to death by the doctor or that what I was taught in grade school. Is it possible it was the combination throat infection and being leached by the doctor that caused George Washington death. Leaching was a common practice for various illnesses by doctors back then.
Combination, I think.
Owning other humans

Hi i love math and more i love your videos
I don't like Jeremy Ray's answer. So, THUMB DOWN!!! From what I read, there is a much different answer in details which I believe is a much better theory. Why is Jeremy Ray a director, huh?
He died on my birthday I know that
Mine too!
Dmaf
Is he in Heaven or Hell because he had slaves?
Allha king Terrence God
Why am I not sad probably from being so evil and cruel to his slaves
Give me a break. Don't like it here? Then go live somewhere else and don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out.
Too bad this didn't happen to every slave master. Good riddance.
hey w...
Get off your lazy ass and back to work! That yardwork ain't gonna do itself! Chop chop! 👏👏
Slavery has been around since the beginning of human history. You think blacks were the only slaves? You need to educate yourself
