Photoshop Shortcuts
B - Brush Tool
E - Eraser (works in a similar way to the brush)
P - Pen Tool (For drawing smooth shapes) (You must rasterize a pen layer before you can edit it)
V - Transform
C - Crop
Ctrl/Cmd + Z - Undo last task
Ctrl/Cmd + Alt + Z - Undo many tasks
After Effects Shortcuts
P - Position
S - Scale
R - Rotation
T - Opacity
U - Show keyframes in layer
Ctrl/Cmd + A - Select all
Y - Change anchor point
B - select the beginning of a playback section
N - select the end of a playback section
0 (on a numberpad) - RAM Preview
I recognise that my style of animation pales in comparison to line-drawn animation.
I create cartoons purely for my jokes and scripts.
This tutorial was made with the intent of helping people with no experience in After Effects create a character animation and to show them how to make a simple cartoon from start to finish.

Hi Ross, great videos you have. Just a tip @ 9:39 - you can sequence all the layers with a shortcut after you have set them to 1 frame long, going to "animation>keyframe assistant>sequence layers".
Nice video, helps a lot. I've notice that you are not using the entire background in your animation. I wonder what is the resolution of it. Thanks.

Can you do a walk cycle? I can do the majority of this now...thanks to you Ross. But(big ole butt) I can't seem to figure out how to get my animations to walk.

Here's a tip : On the mouth comp - create keyframes with markers for each mouth inside, Name the markers so it will show the letter each marker represents (1 is S, 2 is L etc). Finally - move the keyframes with the markers forward after the main scene ends - so your guides won't be seen. Now - just copy the mouth keyframes and paste them where you need them. ENJOY :)

How many mouth layers are there to cover all sounds? I'm a beginner animator and my animations at some points look a little weird in the lip sync, so was wondering how many mouths I should use

well in my case Flash is really hard when manipulating shapes and lines. i guess it's just whats comfortable to u.

I have added the two characters above the background,
I have added the sound,
However, the Current Time Indicator does not move when I try to move it, hence not sound is working.
Actually when I drag the current time indicator (it doesn't visibly move) the first character disappears .

Hey man, really love your cartoons and tutorials. I'd love to try it by myself, though photoshop and after effects seem kinda expensive :/ i found out GIMP would be a great alternative to photoshop, but is there anything like after effects you'd recommend? Doesn't need to be freeware, just not a monthly fee and or not 1k$ ^^

How do I get the layers off the images saved in PS as psd? when I import the image all I get is the image with no layers -- I am not seeing the layers for each body part, arms, legs, eyes etc... could it be something to do with a video card my laptop does not support 3d rendering in PS HELP
so i made a 2d character in photoshop and sent it into after effects to rig, i have also finished the lip sync, but nowI want to use the 3D camera, but when i make my character 3D everything goes out of order and i don't know what to do, i want to zoom and pan

Question. To make an animated cartoon (already have figures drawn and saved on flash drives) Do I only need Photoshop 5 or PS 6 and additionally need the AE After Effect software element? Or does PS 5 /PS 6 come with After Effect element?
If you already have your characters created, you'll want them to be in a PSD file format to be read in After Effects as Ross does in the video. When you download the Adobe Suite, you'll get all the programs (Photoshop, After Effects, Flash, etc.) for $30 a month. If you just want Photoshop and After Effects, I believe you can buy them separately. To put your characters into Photoshop, you'll wanna do some research. It's really easy, but their isn't enough space or time to comment it all here. After you're done in Photoshop, then go to After Effects and pick up with the tutorial and go from their. Hope this helped

+marcus hamelink You can use any picture editing software, as long as you can import the images into After Effects. Since Illustrator is an Adobe product, you're able to import the file into Ae with no conversion necessary. Just drag the files into Ae, and then you'll be able to finish the edits.

I rendered the file and it's 3gb for just 20 seconds, how much gb's are your cartoons when you uploaded them? Did you render in best quality?
You need to compress the video, make sure the rendered video is on a format setting like H.264, then beneath that you'll see a little "Format Options" button click that bastard, and that little drop down will give you a few options, choose MP4, don't forget to select to turn audio on as well. There you go it's not a big-boy file anymore buddy
