- Carmelina is desperate to sell her three-bedroom bungalow so she can return to school…But the property’s been on the market for a month already, and no one’s biting. Sofie says in spite of the home’s charm potential, its mish-mash flooring, oversize furniture (and fish tank), grimy kitchen, and unfinished DIY jobs are a major turn-off for families and first-time buyers.
In order to put some love back into the lifeless property, Sofie comes up with a $4,500 plan for an update with plenty of sparkle. Carmelina is convinced about the changes from the start. And as Anthony and the team neutralize the décor, install uniform flooring, and improve curb appeal, Sofie gives Carmelina tips on presentation, and gives her a hand with cleaning the house from top to bottom. The results are outstanding…

#Unsellables
Anthony is always so kind, calm, and diplomatic. Perfect for a nervous, stressed homeowner.
Sofi is the queen of tactfulness. She definitely is a kind person when it comes to interacting with the sometimes clueless homeowners.
Sophie is a good teacher, showing her clients a sample house. I keep watching these because she’s a good designer but she’s also positive. She doesn’t make fun of anyone. I’d love to see her do something know because the style is older now. Love to see what she’d do with newer styles
Are we watching the same show? She's snarky and snippy as soon as she walks in the door. I know most of that's scripted, but it comes across as a smart-azz. Many of these homeowners are at their wit's end, have had some sort of recent trauma, and most don't want to move but need the money. What they don't need is a bunch of adolescent jabbing at their home and living conditions.
I do wonder if any of the sellers change their minds after their house has been updated, I know I would be tempted with some of these cuz they're ended up to be beautiful.
Anthony is a designer in his own right. He seems to make a lot of design decisions with floor, entrance way. Later episodes, the contractor teaches DIY but design is mostly done for him. The entrance he made looks so good in the pictures of Sophie sitting in the living room with it behind her.
This was my favorite make-over. The floors sealed the deal.
If I had been the owner, I would have kept it.
Wow the flooring made a huge difference.
That dead dracena on the back patio just says it all.
I mean...it takes a LOT to kill one of those
😥😅
I know 🤣
Sometimes people are just overwhelmed by circumstances and need some help and inspiration..! Obviously she had to go back to school to improve her quality of life!
Her level of procrastination or whatever was a huge problem. This is a bit more than just being overwhelmed. She had been there a while. You have to wonder what else in her life she’s just let go from neglect.
I think that is a kind observation. I think she was just lazy and through-other.
Not liking the vertical faux asian screen thing, it looks like an unfinished wall. Add open shelving there so at least plants & decorative glass can sit there.
Those thin vertical pieces of wood will warp and bow with time. I agree with your plan.
Right? God forbid someone sees a bathroom door from the main entryway 😒
Agreed, I think the bars make it look 1980's. I also can't believe that they left the dead plant out the back.
Glass bricks need to goooooo
I hope things are going well for her.
I loved all the changes except the vertical wood bars. Every time they spanned by with the camera, I thought "jail cell." It would be better to wall it in or remove it completely.
Those bars didn’t look evenly spaced either
I know, just put a wall up already
Very nice! Grooming the tree made a huge difference. Jonathan’s screen in the living room was pretty.
Why does she never show the bathrooms in any of her shows? I can only imagine what this bathroom looked like...
I was thinking that ....not one of the shows ...have I seen a bathroom complete ..maybe because it out prices the renovation?
There's one with a fish bathroom 🐠🐡🐟
They do show bathrooms but not in all of the episodes.
Damn, the seller needed a stranger with a camera to tell her to clean her house? And it's a shame that during 8 years, the seller didn't do what ultimately amounted to cosmetic changes to make it nice for HERSELF. She seemed amazed at what paint and new flooring did, when she could have had it like that the whole time and enjoyed the house more.
Maybe she couldn't afford to, after paying the mortgage, property taxes, insurance, etc. Maybe she was hoping for a possible partner - second income, second pair of hands!
Some people just have no skills and no money. It's not really their fault.
@@Stoffmonster467 Oh, but it is. If you can't afford something to begin with, don't buy it. If you cannot afford to do maintenance for something, don't buy it. Kinda like a boat....people buy the one they "have to have" yet don't think of the costs involved for maintenance, gas, storage, insurance, etc. Just thinking of impressing people.
Linda Dumey For some things. But cleaning costs nothing and painting and minor fixes can be done for almost nothing. However, I do know that depression and other illnesses can affect one’s ability and I don’t want to seem uncaring about those things. She took the news well and got right to work and no one can criticize that.
@@texasmimi5566 When I bought my house the taxes were dirt cheap. I had contractors come in and they literally destroyed it. I got very sick 6 months after I moved in with fibromyalgia. I then lost my job because the work went to India! I lost everything I had yet still continued to pay my mortgage and all my other bills. I did keep the house clean. Sometimes things don't always work out the way you want them to. Now I am going into forclosure. Now my house won't sell because the foundation is actually sinking. It should be torn down. It is a row home. I don't care anymore because I am older. You just get tired of everything sometimes.
Wonder why they didnt address the back yard deck and the mess strewn all around. You could see it in the beginning of the video and even at the end you could see the mess towards the back of the house.
But still left the dead yucca plant on the back verranda
Sometimes I find it so frustrating that with so many young people trying to get into the housing market, others take the experience of owning a house for granted and let the whole thing just become a bit of a dump.
This was one of the best transformations yet! Applause.
Judging by the condensation, they didn't repair the weatherproofing on the patio door.
Too lazy to even wipe down the cabinets or throw out a dead plant. The transformation was amazing for a mere 4500$.
We just sold a beautiful house that we'd built 4 years ago. I kept the house immaculate and nicely staged for showings and the first person who saw it bought it--several days before it was officially put on the market.
We bought a less expensive home to cut our mortgage way down (from $229,000 US dollars to $110,000 US dollars and a 15 year mortgage from a 30 year one). It looked fine on the surface--but wasn't clean--and had been staged nicely. After we moved in I had to really scrub it. It took 6 hours just to clean the front entryway and hallway. The bathrooms were gross. It was a filthy diamond in the rough.
We're now updating it and it should look almost like new within a few months.
I think she was eating food instead of paying attention to her house
I sold my last house in 2 hours. Didn't even have to list it.
@@jdee4956 I sold mine after a 2-hour open house and a bidding war for 13K over the asking price. That wouldn't have happened if it looked like a herd of billy goats had been living there.
I've been having a bit of a binge watch of these - Sophie is much nicer than her sister! - and for all the flaws in her house it's the first I've seen that isn't insanely cluttered and I say that as someone who has far too much clutter myself.
Those low hanging branches should have been trimmed so the house could be seen.
I would rather buy a fixer upper than the upgraded house , with usually upgraded with the cheapest materials. But maybe it's only me...
I agree with you. After all, the traditional real estate advice is to buy the worst house in the beat neighborhood. I've done that 4 times so far and made money each time.
@@barnabyaprobert5159 , especially if you can do the work yourself. That’s what we did and it will be a nice chunk of money for our retirement, 300K-s..
@@evasmith2705 ^ This! You and your husband get it! EVERYTHING is online nowadays and Home Depot and Lowes carry everything one needs!
My current home is one that I purchased that has “good bones.“ In other words, it was structurally sound, but the decorating could make your eyes bleed.
I agree. I would rather buy a fixer-upper than something that was newly renovated in a style I didn't like.
Poor dog lost his bed, lol.
When I sold, I put my packed boxes in the spare room with a camping mattress on them. I bought new bedding with pillows. I put a nicely done little sign on it that it’s not a real bed and please don’t sit on it. It was funny how people including Realtors loved it! I needed to show it was a bedroom. (I threw the mattress away and didn’t need more then mine) I kept a clean house but scrubbed it extra before even calling a Realtor. I spent $13,000. I had a 2nd bathroom built. It made a huge difference. Mine sold fine
The host sometimes tilted her head so much my neck hurts too lolz
That house turned out so pretty!
Seems like a lot of these fixes that were done -- OMG clean the place! -- the real estate agent should have told her to do before ever putting it on the market in the first place. Isn't that part of an agent's job?
Ah, but then there would be no show!
Shouldn't a person have enough sense to have a clean house if they are selling it without being told by the real estate agent to do so. ?
@@Joyce-id3dr in my 75-years I have learned that some people do not know the definition of clean. In my former job, I often had to go in homes. I was often aghast at the home. In public, the person appears put together, but the house is unclean and cluttered. My mother and grandmothers were so clean one could eat off the floors. From my mother, I learned how to clean and recognize dirt when I see it.
@@sassygrammy1258 I cleaned houses for a living for over 18 years and believe me I saw some filth. My husband's family is always commenting on what a neat freak I am and how wonderful my house looks. I was raised by a mother who turned into a filthy hoarder after we all left home because it was me and my sisters who did the housework.(95 percent was me doing it) Each one of them is just like my mom was, awful housekeepers. I love a clean and tidy house.
@@sassygrammy1258 Bingo!
Floors look amazing!
i wonder why the builder didnt just finish the living wall in the first place? They did a nice job. Inspires me to fix my house.
LOL, Except I really liked the glass wall!
Me too but those slats looked super cool too
It had potential to plain for my taste. Maybe something with lights and/or fabrics
2:25. I can already tell they will cut down that beautiful shade tree, and replace it with something hideous.
14:24. I was wrong. Just a nice pruning
Anthony's the love back in the house and Sofie is such an eye opener for the seller👌💕👍
The colors in the kitchen are worse after and why didn't they trim the tree that takes like 20 minutes and it uncovers the front of the house
Ugh - the glass bricks.
and talk about half finished--hinges were not replaced on cabinets...so you have old gold hinges and silver knobs.
I would have chosen a brighter, maybe even slightly bold color for the front door; something to catch your eye and welcome you in.
yes that colour was yukkee
Anthony make things so easy.
The hinges on the kitchen cabinets are a cringe and the colors in the kitchen didn't improve it's look.
I agree about the hinges. I noticed those right away. The colors of the paint still left it boring- no wow factor, or personality. The wooden slats give a look of being unfinished. I think the glass wall looked better.
I agree , kitchen could have been done better
@@dianamurtaugh641
Just saw your comment. The glass wall, minus the partial, stepped-glass-block part, was much better than the other.
They could have added new doors in the kitchen.
@@brendazolli3059
That might have added a lot more to costs.
No offence but this little house was one step away from having to be sold as a flip house.
When I was young back in the early 80's "Move in Ready" was a totally different standard. If the roof didn't leak, the plumbing, heat, and electrical worked, it was "Move in ready". Now kids expect to buy a decorator house. No wonder so many Millennials think they can't afford a house.
We bought a very ugly home, with outdated kitchen and bathroom, ugly wallpaper, and pink carpet everywhere, but it had: 1. The square footage we wanted. 2. A nice layout - good bones 3. A large, beautiful yard 4. Good neighbourhood. I knew we could fix everything, but not those 4 things. Because it was dated, we got it for a good price, and we renovated it. It was a lovely home. I had to move, but I sure did love that house!
13 years ago when this show happened, millennials weren't the buyers.
@@MeganBecnel exactly! This show was not filmed yesterday, it's super old!
@@jonijoni1145 You are so right. Bought and sold many houses and used this rule.
Millenials do have ridiculously high standards. They want it all.
at 12:44 its not true ... in 2019 some floor companies are in big class action lawsuit for formaldehyde 400million settlement lumber liquidators...some floors are leeching chemicals...not good situation and business practice
curious WHY do you blur out the paintings on the walls? still think the kitchen is too small for a table that size. living room is my favourite
maybe copyright issues...? Not sure why either.
Why do real estate agents not tell their clients what should be done to improve chances of a sale? These homes are so messed up to begin with and the agents are wasting their time trying to sell it.
Realtors DO tell sellers what needs to be done for a quick sell. Many times sellers refuse and believe they know better. The realtor is usually blamed for a house not selling.🤨
the glass blocks remind me of houses I browse that have wood paneling. Good grief, how many people lived with this.
They should have cleaned up the deck and removed the dead plant, which was on view from the office!
I would of kept the house and got a school loan!
worst decision possible. stay in a house too big for one and drown in debt that you pay off till you are 80? DUMB!
It is "would HAVE".....
@@texasmimi5566 😂
I haven’t watched a lot of episodes, but most I see the charm & think I’d buy it without your updates. This one I’d definitely bypass.
How come that houses in a place as vast as Canada, are so crammed and claustrophobic?
Here in Holland it is a consequence of not having space but why would people build something like this in Canada?
Also i find all this talk about "fitting a double bed" and suiting table " very treacherous and wrong.
You could not even turn in that kitchen anymore . The table was obsolete. And not "fitting".
And even in the tiny Netherlands -if you stuff a double bed in a room like this - youwill get very funny looks!
Those glass bricks are the outside walls/windows in a building that was a former elementary school in San Antonio, TX. Who the heck thought glass bricks go inside a house.
Realtor should have suggested looking for a flipper to buy it and be done.
Nice work. Looks very nice. Wonder what it looks like now?
THEY NEVER SHOW THE BATHROOMS.
I realize that this show is from 4 years ago, but there is no way that you can do that much work for under 5K where we live. Just the labor alone would close to that!
maybe the labour is free to the owner. paid for by the TV company?
Return to school for what? Omg, I hope it was worth it. Shoulda just kept that house after it was fixed up. Ha.
Jezabel-in-Hell 111
I agree. I would have found ways to pay for school that did not involve selling my home.
Maybe she bought a smaller apartment/condo and also went to school? I wonder what she studied, and if it was the dream career she wanted.
I understand that not everyone understands what improvements to make, but duh, clean your house before you put it on the market.
Why is she even surprised? Minimal effort equals minimal results.
When people are selling their house they should understand that not only do most people not want to put in the work but they have a mortgage and any repares have to come from their saving which people don’t have usually for fixing it’s easier to make a house look great and get your money right back once you sale
That evergreen tree needs to come down and be replaced with a Japanese maple with burgundy leaves on the right side of the property.
She needs basic cleaning and just finishing and what a difference it would make. And not all renovation have to be expensive to be durable.
Should not have rebuilt that glass wall looks no different only now it looks like jail bars. Really!
I wish they would link where they get this stuff. I would like to know where the flooring is from.
This house would list for $55,000 in a nice neighborhood in Erie, Pa.
Why didn't they throw away that dead plant?
Why do they always blur out any art work??
Erika Bowling yeah I was wondering that too.
Sometimes it can be offensive...nudes, even scripture set some people off
sunflower 77 maybe becauze of copyright laws? Not giving credit to the artist.
I agree that it must be copyright.
I don't like the screen. They should have left that space open since the house is so small.
that floor is almost black................big turn off, no way!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The furniture all looks so dated. That wall they built is awful. They should have just removed the wall entirely.
I think the wall allowed them to remove that pole in the kitchen/hall it was load bearing
I think you're right. They never talked about it, but there was a white column that they took out that really needed to go. That said, I don't think the stick wall they built looked very good either.
The beams were crooked, badly spaced, and some of them were obviously made with than one piece of wood.
Strangest layout ever. The rooms are so small! Otherwise good upgrades except kitchen counter color is awful. 😜
Just as the voiceover says that the laminate floor is continuous, we see that the guest bedroom has wall to wall (so does the main bedroom) and the office has lighter color laminate. I would have kept the lovely slate in the kitchen (if it was not faux) and laminated the rest including the bedrooms. PS There's a reason I'm sure but it's quite distressing to have the artwork blurred out.
The house is beautiful, but Doggie bed free? NOPE! just keep the bed vacuumed and clean.
Where did the fish go?
the shame is that this home has been horribly neglected by this owner for all 8 years. untidy may concern the buyer but i would wonder if this house is even stable. are termites the only think that is allowing this home to have ant stability? this looks like it could fall down anytime! what kind of real estate agent lists this home as is?
yall didnt paint the square on the ceiling in the master bedroom after changing the light......it stuck out like sore thumb...
17:56 the second slat from the left in that hideous jail cell wall isn't installed correctly... other than that, the living room came out nice
the cabinet color does NOT go with the countertop at all....wtf??
What is wrong with these sellers!
I noticed this before but I need to understand why all pictures hanging on the walls are blurred
It is blurred for copyright reasons.
They're all wearing this black beret with colored dots in various episodes, I wonder if it's some kind of common props :)
Driveway and landscaping have to be redone
did she say 315,000.00? omg
you can buy a mansion in Arkansas for that much, or an overhead apartment and business on main street Jonesboro, Arkansas. For real.
Gristle Von Raben
Yeah, I wonder if there aren't areas like that in Canada, too...towns with low cost real estate that aren't crime-ridden or terribly depressed, or so far north that you'd freeze to death most of the year. I regularly check real estate prices in places that I might want to retire to someday. The Carlolinas, Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, etc. all have lots of nice towns with extremely cheap but still nice houses and very low property taxes. Most have tax bills that are only a tiny fraction of what I pay for the dubious privilege of living in New York State.
You can in Missouri too.
Haha right? In 2014, we bought our 2500 square ft 4 bedroom 4 bath 1 acre home in Lancaster County, PA for $285,000 then sold it in 2019 for $316,000. We moved to a 1400 square ft house on 5 acres with a 3000 sq ft barn, chicken coop, wood shed & 3 acres fenced in pasture in rural York County, PA for $260,000. The price of the home in this video makes me nauseous

Its a shame that people spend lots of money to fix up a house to sell, The new buyer will change things to fit their needs and wants.
While it is true that the buyer will change things to fit their needs and wants, if you don't stage a home they can see themselves in you won't be able to sell.
Nobody would pay market price for the house in the condition it was in, therefore, spending money to make necessary repairs and maintenance and give rooms a fresh paint and new flooring if needed is what it takes to sell. When you weigh the outcome in the balance, either you want to sell and do what needs to be done to accomplish that, including putting in the necessary work and money) or you don't sell at all or for a price offered by a house flipper who will invest $5,000 and sell the property for $20,000 more in a month or two. When done correctly, investing in repairs, maintenance, and updating the appearance of an interior is paid back in a larger purchase price.
That's small change ($) to invest in making a house sellable. Doesn't matter what a buy does with it. The point was to get it sold.
not a fan of the slats. Maybe a pony wall instead.

Oh and rugs in bedrooms. Shabby in today’s day and age
You can try lovely Indian style screen .
Who pays for all this?
Love this show, but the kitchens are a turnoff. They make them look more like bathrooms. The color and hardware for this one was horrible. The floors were great!
Just look at trhe seller! She is neglecting herself and her home reflects that neglect!
Lazy & dirty home owner who thought that someone would pay top money for a dump! Now much better but the kitchen is still a wreck, look at the paint job on the doors!
What does she have against dogs?! Just because she doesn't like doesn't matter, the dog bed stays. Sophie get a life. People have pets. The green in the master bedroom is hideous, in another episode she complained about the color blue and now she paints blue for a bedroom? Neutral color lady, aside from grey's. Cream, beige, taupe but not Green. Stop "injecting" your personal color choices.
Not liking the new kitchen colors at all! Who puts in mauve countertop? 🙄🤦🏼♀️
That was an ugly choice for the laminate floors, it should have been a medium tone common to that type of home. If it's a cheap grade of laminate -- and it was, judging from the cost for the entire house -- it could scratch easily. It will also show lint and dust.
That place looked like the owner didn't even try to prep it for sale.
I agree. Dark floors are a huge mistake because lint and dust show immediately.
I agree way too dark
Such a shame she sold her home. I wonder if she will ever get back on the property ladder.
No offense, but she needs to get markable herself.
Does she own any clothes that are not black? Side table in master bedroom do not match in color or material.
New home owners are not buying her, her clothes or her bed side table! You are quite rude arnt you?
@@JulieWallis1963 If she can have a show where she is rudely criticizing homeowners then she is fair game. And did you criticize everyone else that did not leave positive comments?
