The great guitar solo is Mike McCready! He wrote the music for this song and Eddie Vedder wrote the lyrics. The story goes that Eddie was in a hotel and heard an ambulance outside go by and that's where the lyrics came from. Eddie's lyrics are like poetry.
Eddie is one of the few vocalists I know that has such palpable emotions in the way he sings and presents the lyrics. You feel his songs. This song is a perfect example.

Great reaction. Thanks for listening to one of the all-time best bands. They've got a new album and tour coming out this year (2024)! "Mind Your Manners" from this same album will give you a bit more of their harder side. "Black" live from MTV Unplugged is incredible, but so many people have done that one. Also, "Alive", "Even Flow"... you really can't go wrong.
I haven't seen many reactions to this song. It's one of my all-time favorites, and I recently learned to play and sing it. I'm so happy I did. I think you nailed the meaning and what this song represents.

The joy of finding pearl jam is that you can hear things in a song rhat mean something to you that no one else will hear. For me this song is about being afraid to love again.
