Bro, I've loved Mythvision and your work ever since the days of you truly being "kinda" out there and Zeitgeisty, with astro theology, Roman provenance conspiracy type of stuff and all of that, yet I kept on watching simply because your seemingly unquenchable thirst for knowledge, truth, constant learning, your willingness to change your mind/update beliefs based on new data or not having a slightest problem saying; hey I was wrong, were all so effing inspiring!
That's not to even mention your actual life struggle and overcoming it like a champ, only to then start helping other people in their darkest hour, doing everything humanly possible to build them back up.
You've also shown us your human side in other ways, shared with us the kind of honesty, humbleness, humility and vulnerability that are extraordinary in the truest sense of the word.
Anyhoo...to see how far you've come and how much you've grown within the last 4 years alone, all while having so much fun in the process, is truly incredible. It's amazing!
Now if that's not a virtuous, meaningful life worth living...I don't know what is.
And then they dare to say atheists are nihilists, they have no purpose? Pfttt..
Just keep on doing what you have been doing and I am wishing you and your family nothing but all the best!! You deserve it. ✌️

I’m not a scholar or academic ,was a born again Christian then had three years Bible College after 25 yrs of huge doubts then coming out as gay I could no longer handle the contradictions of scripture. And so started a slow journey into exploring logic. I discovered your site and am so thankful you have opened so many doors for me. Keep going never give up you are doing a great job “nil desperandum” I’m sure you are helping so many come out of the bondage of Christian religion and more across a whole spectrum of truth seekers regardless of intellectual abilities.

Think of this. The creator came in human form in a culture, like we all do and came into all knowledge and wisdom as his mission was opened to him, taught the redemption of he and his Father to all. Not just mainstream Christianity no...but the truth in all religions. And the falsehoods in all..starting with his own. Men hijack and capitalize on such...he said they would. We got the leftovers but guess who can put it all back together...his spirit within you. Keep the man and perhaps the God..not man's definition of him, discard the created details and keep the lessons. Peace brother. Yeshua is still the way...not because of a book but because of his and your heart imo of course. That's my idea on it. Pre Constantine Christianity had very diverse views...because that's what humans do, and its okay. What humans have done with the truth is ..sad. Glad you were redeemed from oppressive false teachings overlaid onto your personal Saviour....and in time you may accept the one teaching you, as Yeshua again but your heart is and has always been more important than our knowledge of details, which one can study all his/her life and still be wrong. Me too...I can be wrong lol.

I'm an ex-Christian and an ex-catholic myself. Discovering my gay self and hedonism helped me to dump religion since it was all about promoting fertility with a threat of a punishing god in an archaic way of continuing the human race. Religion is against pleasure for its own sake.

I’ve been watching your channel for some time now. I personally love it! I was used to watching Dr Mythos for most of the religious source material but when I saw your channel and having intellectual recourse with your scholarly guest. To me most of what is being talked about is a refresher course for me and it’s actually why I’ve never felt comfortable with religion as I can tell it’s only been put in place to govern the people. I myself am somewhat agnostic on the matter but knowledge ultimately is power.

    • @Nocturnalux

Why call that God, when the term is so loaded as it is?

    • @AvanaVana
      @AvanaVana Před 4 měsíci

      No.
That is “humanity”. That is what humans have evolutionary evolved compassion and consciousness for, on top of earlier evolutionary advances such as oxytocin, serotonin, the mesocorticolimbic system in the brain, etc.
“god” and other supernatural/metaphysical concepts are the things that are bigger than humanity, collected and anthropomorphized-especially, but not limited to, intangible and universal concepts. At the highest end, these are gods that represent vast unknowables like time (and it’s end and beginning), space, creation, the universe, life itself (the animate quality or principle of life), death, the afterlife, fate (both the good things and bad things that happen to us and the world that seem out of our control), as well as gravity, motion, and the physical laws of nature.
Then you have the gods that represent conceptual archetypes: masculinity, femininity, fatherhood, motherhood, balance, beauty, justice, purity, wisdom, order, chaos, martiality, etc.
Then you have the gods that represent physical aspects of the environment (once) outside of human control: fire, earth, air, water, the stars, the sun, the moon, the sky, storms, the sea, rivers, the cycle of the seasons, dawn, dusk, day, night, animality/animal behavior, vegetative growth, fertility, etc.
Then you have the gods of human activity: trade/commerce/fortune, travel, war, home life, sex, healing/medicine, hunting, etc.
And finally, then you have the gods of local places, families, and tribes. These vary from culture to culture-in the pre-Buddhist Tibetan culture (and surviving even into Tibetan Buddhism), there are several classes of protector deities and various god-spirits of individual mountains, of rivers, lakes, temples, cities. The Romans had familial/clan ancestral deities, genii loci (gods/spirits of places), and individual genii (guardian deities/guardian angels), as well as imperial deities that represented both the individual genius of the emperor and the imperial family, and even the emperor himself was considered as a god. In many other cultures, kings and emperors were also considered gods, and many other cultures have or had ancestor worship, ancestor gods and spirits, and animistic gods/spirits of places and individual objects or organisms in the natural world.
All these things are “god”. These things collectively all represent that which is larger and/or outside of individual human experience. Obviously in monotheistic religions, they are all rolled into a single anthropomorphic entity, while in polytheistic religions, different entities take up different areas of “responsibility”, and in some more animistic religions, nearly everything, animate or inanimate, is a some kind of god or spirit.
“Morality” and “love” are purely human concepts and experiences, evolved by humans to interrelate with one another for the sake of forming kinship bonds that allow humans to survive the world. “Gods” were created to explain everything outside of or larger than human experience that could not be explained in any other way at the time.

Funny Derek ‘cause I spent way more time as a devout believer thinking about death than I do now as a deconstructed Christian evangelical (with a bit of an agnostic bent as there’s no certainty with anything spiritual for or against). I mean as a believer I’d have nightmares and cogitative day-episodes thinking about the possibility that scripture was not authoritative nor true, meaning there would be no heaven or hell or judgment - so why was I so involved in this delusional religion that takes all my time and effort. Now I just enjoy life and live each day given. Occasionally I’ll hear a passage out of Luke with the Lazarus/hell/Abraham metaphorical rambling and freak out a bit. 50 years of brainwashing will do that to you.😮

There comes a point in doing one's best to understand people in general, that you must save your energy when it comes to base, negative, belligerent types. Do good for the Good, and leave the rest to their miseries. With fools there is no companionship. Rather than to live with men who are selfish, vain, quarrelsome and obstinate, let a man walk alone.

If you do a video about King David, you NEED to compare him to Hermes. Hermes was a youngling, who played the lyre, had the power to soothe people to sleep, dressed as a shepherd, had male lovers (cf David & Jonathan) - and Hermes killed a giant "Argus Panoptes" by throwing a stone at him - and decapitated him afterwards.

One more thing. I find it interesting how people of various Christian faiths, especially Mormonism (I realize LDS is not mainstream Christian), are suspicious of higher education as they believe - correctly - that knowledge threatens faith. Once we begin learning about pre-Judaic cultures, we begin to understand that cultures share similar myths and therefore to interpret myths literally is ridiculous.

With regard to clickbait titles, and this is meant as constructive criticism because I love the genius minds you somehow have the power to attract to your channel, I prefer the video title and thumbnails to inform me of what I'm going to watch and learn even if it's just you speaking sincerely to us. When I see titles and thumbnails like "I'm done!" or "It's over!" or "We need to talk!" or "I didn't want to make this video," I instantly tune out and ignore it. It gives me this automatic and intense, visceral feeling of repulsion. Hope this helps, but aside from that, keep on trucking and helping us learn while you learn! Many thanks!

What he took away from his efforts was that the Bible repeatedly referred to "your Slave" and that he hated everything emanating from "that desert". i think, what if? what if all these stories are just the way Greeks taught their conquered lands about Greek culture. they built theatres, had discussions, compared, and constructed different versions of the classics to sell tickets and spread propaganda just like Hollywood. We still watch Shakespeare's plays such as Westside Story, etc. The Greeks knew the levanties loved a good story. After the sun went down on Sabato, the theaters were serving pizza, beer and a show. Nothing was more fun than Robo Jesus, Robo Jesus 2 and Robo Jesus 3 or Batman movies or James Bond movies. All these stories are just versions of the same old same old. But we eat it up. those goat herders came to the big city on weekends to look at the creations of their conquering occupiers. 🎶🎵Maria, I just met a girl named Maria. 🎶🎵

I discovered your channel a few months ago and it has had a profound impact on my life. I was born into an Eastern Orthodox Christian family. My grandfather was a priest, as was my uncle and I have been surrounded by Orthodoxy my entire life. I have gone through phases of my faith, like all Christians. Because I grew up in the USA, I have also tried some other Christian flavors, including a brief spell with Evangelicalism and tamer Protestant faiths, like the Vineyard church in Los Angeles. I have long had doubts about the articles of faith in Christianity - although I never entertained a literal interpretation of the Bible. Frankly, I felt a profound fear to confront those issues because I felt like I would be questioning the foundation of my family and the meaning of so many devout believers I've met through my family, including monks who seemed to emanate a holy/enlightened vibe. To be clear, I've met people from other faiths who had the same vibe. To get to the point, listening to your guests has helped me achieve clarity regarding my own beliefs, and it has given me a new perspective on the evolution of Judaism and Christianity. One other scholar who has helped me is Paul Wellis, a former Anglican priest from Australia who believes that Old Testament polytheism reflects ancient ET contact stories whose origins predate Sumer etc... I recommend having him as a guest for a totally "out there" perspective. He has written a series of books about Eden, the most recent being The Eden Conspiracy. His perspective overlaps heavily with things I've heard on your channel. Anyway, I really appreciate the work you are doing, I like that you mention your own experience as a Christian because faith is personal after all. Your channel has given me the courage to confront my faith and to grow my faith in a new way. Would be curious to learn whether you still believe in some sort of God, and perhaps to relate how you dealt with your crisis of faith. Thank you man for helping me, and I'm sure, so many others.

I don't see you bringing on people who are way out of the park. And we really should not be avoiding religious sensitivies. We can treat it delicately and diplomatically and state that for some this is difficult to hear and they keep faith in it, but we need to tackle what is in the text, whether it happened or not and the human mechanations behind the text

To be honest, I like you and I like that you are doing this work, and I appreciate the fact that you obviously put a ton of work into what you do, and I have definitely enjoyed much content that you’ve put up here-but I do get turned off from an excess of “clickbait”, as well as “outrage manufacturing” and the deliberate manufacturing of controversy and rancor/animosity, and what I perceive as overly commercializing your content/the frequent upselling and solicitation.
Now, I totally understand that this is your business, and that’s fine-I’m not going to tell you how I think you should put food on your table-but for me personally, these things have led me to only occasionally watch your channel’s videos. These “turn-offs” aren’t limited to your channel alone, so I’m not singling you out here. In fact, unfortunately, it seems to me that a large portion of the critical Bible scholarship community on the internet is excessively commercialized and manufacturing outrage and animosity. For example, I respect Bart Ehrman’s work, his books, etc, but his YT channel is almost exclusively commercials for paid classes. Other scholars online like Josh Bowen, whose wife works for Ehrman, have seemingly devolved into accessory commercial machinery for the same system. I get that university salaries, particularly for earlier or mid-career academics, aren’t great, and I don’t mind paying for good content once in a while (hey, it’s cheaper and more realistic than going back to university), but it’s the constant upselling and the manufacturing of engagement by way of negativity that really turns me off.
On the other side of it, there are some content creators like History Valley that have managed to maintain a focus almost exclusively just on quality content, straight facts, and zero clickbait. James Tabor has managed to put out a lot of quality videos, although recently I have even seen him drifting into clickbait territory and treating his YT as a funnel for generating conversions on his website.
Edit: I also would like to say-I think you are the single biggest asset for your channel, and I say that because it’s clear you are extremely earnest in this work and that is clear both from the stacks of books you constantly have near you, many of them open and earmarked and making appearances throughout the videos, as well as how open you have been to revising your views, both on the subject matter, as well as the obvious effort you make to improving your channel and connecting with your audience in self-reflective (but not overly indulgent) videos like this. You come across as a very genuine person, no matter what. And you are a great interviewer and presenter as well-you obviously have natural talent for this.
And I should also say, polemical positions do not bother me so much. The simple truth is, whether people like it or not, in many cases there are clear, real facts and then there is obvious fantasy, and even in cases where the facts aren’t obvious, there are better conclusions than others. I appreciate that you take an active stand on things that are obviously wrong, because you know from firsthand experience how harmful some ideas can be, and why playing “both sides” doesn’t work. I was 13 when I “came out” as an atheist (though I am a Buddhist these days-my own search for “truth” has also involved a rather tortuous path through the Western Mystery Tradition), to my extremely Catholic family from Sicily, with grandparents that went to church every day and a catechist mother, growing up in a very conservative, religious small Midwest town. And I went through similar struggles to you, in more than one way. This was in the 90s, way before YT, and I am glad to know kids like me who went through a lot in their earnest search for something real have this channel as a resource today.

I learned the real meaning of criticism is just as my good old boss always said:
"We criticize our friends ... because we don't want our enemies to get better!"
It's doing a favor, like Looks like you have spinach in your teeth, or a false equivalent in your argument! I say, thanks for your correction from your perspective. Something to think about.

Yes, Bart completely misunderstood Candida Moss in his interview with her, when talking about Mary. She said that Mark was ambiguous and left open the (hypothetical) possibility that was developed later (by anti-christian polemicists) that Mary was a sex-worker. Bart thought she was saying that Mark's gospel stated this directly, which isn't what she said.

Many people in this channel use the word God in their own interpretation for what is consider is right, like, being passionate from one another is "god" or having inner god is like, following your heart. For me, it is kinda confusing and beautiful even they consider themselves as atheist or non believer. Using previous faith to create new ways of giving kindness and generosity towards others it's beautiful, thoughtful, and creative for the many former Christine on our side. Well, me, I'm a secular Buddhist. I always say this to some people as a kind of blessings for their well-being. "May you be well and happy.😊"

    *Scholars and personality cult mentality*
There is a common genetic fallacy even among atheists.
For example, I posted an argument against a small point an excellent scholar made and I provided evidence for my conclusion. One commenter basically said, ”Why should I believe you over the scholar?”
You should follow the evidence more than the person. Sure, scholars are much better trained at assessing data and better informed as to what the data is, but they can make mistakes.
People who say “X scholar is bad so I won’t listen to anything they say,” is applying the genetic fallacy.
Dennis MacDonald may be overblowing the Greek influence, I don’t know, but even if he is, we still owe him gratitude for opening our minds to the possibility.

John 8 is talking about Jesus Parents Mary & Panthera having sex and being unmarried. Jesus writing with his finger to address all have been inspired by gnostic writing where a woman Sophia (from which Eve and Mary were symbolic of) uses her finger to create all life. Its a switch of addressing all sinners from creating all life. Why cause they wanted to stone her to death and Jesus focus was on life. And Matthew use for the word virgin Parthenos is a Pun for Panthera, (not the other way in direction), name, a phoenican serving in the Roman army. Phoenicians and Jews were cousins back in biblical times

Without all the theological commentaries about him I find him a very "tangible" man who loves to just sit in silence and just be not trying to figure out who he is. Neither do I

Interesting "cast the first stone" story, but, as you know, that story isn't in any bible before 1000. I have youtube on autoplay so your show comes up all the time. It's no accident that your and Niels channels have risen to the upper echelon of channels that cover similar subject matter. People who want to understand a thing go to its source, and you guys are documenting just that, the sources, therefore ppl flock to your channels. So anyone who would turn down being a guest on your show is clearly not interested in leading people to the source of anything. You don't need much data to understand even the most obscure of actions or relationships, all you need is a correct definition and a little description of the moving parts and you can make the connections. For example, how I would define your channel would be like a "digital source book" put together by someone giving an honest attempt at interpreting these sources in light of 1. All the other sources and 2. The insight offered by all the other honest interpreters who go by similar methods. Therefor anyone who isn't eager to participate in such an endeavor is either A. delusional or B. Deceitful (and it could be argued thay A is just a less conscious version of B that doesn't have as harmful of an intention behind it) Idk of any other conclusion that would describe such behavior. Can someone comment if they see a problem in my logic? I think it's really important we identify those who are honestly seeking after the truth so we can then identify the phonies, call em out, and be done with em, cuz there really is no middle ground here, either youre looking for the truth, wich is surrounded in non truth, or your not, so let's miss the bs and make these distinctions. ❤❤❤
