    As a language teacher (and learner), I’d say teachers will probably say “I’ll teach it to you on the next lesson” or say they’ll prepare a lesson because it’s probably an advanced or complicated grammar point that requires a refresher for the teacher herself. At least that’s been the reason why I say that to my students. I think as a teacher becomes more experienced they are able to teach on the spot but that requires years and years of experience. I try to always answer or clarify things on the spot but as a teacher with 10 years of experience teaching, if I’m not 100% sure of my explanation, I would rather study it carefully, bring good examples and exercises, rather than teaching it on the spot and missing an important point or perhaps confusing the student more. Also, this mostly happens with the most commonly misused words or confusing and complicated grammar points even for native speakers.
    I wouldn’t feel bad if a teacher does that because I would rather get a full, clear explanation in a full lesson rather than a quick one that leaves me even more confused. But I definitely understand what you’re saying. As a learner, it can be frustrating to hear that. I just wanted to point that out since I definitely felt called out when I heard that comment in your video. 😅

      Yeah, I understand why a teacher would say it~ But, from my experience, I rarely need a full lesson but rather just a refresher. So much so that the teachers feel a bit 당황스럽다 when they realize they don't need all the material they prepared and have to find something else to fill the remaining time in the lesson 😬😬😬

    About the reading point: while reading our brain doesn't just read every single letter, it recognizes the word like it's an image. We don't need to "read" the word "hello", we just look at it and know it. We don't go like h-e-l-l-o. While learning a foreign language, especially if this language is using a different alphabet it can just be hard to get your brain from actually reading to recognizing. I guess just reading more would help. Some people are just slow readers in general, even in their native language and for me, reading more has helped.

    I have been stuck at intermediate for about 3 years now, I feel like there are some moments where I sound totally advanced and other times where I don't even know how to formulate a basic sentence. I'm ALWAYS wondering if I'm always going to have gaps in my knowledge, or if I'm even worthy of being an intermediate learner. I've had some tutors say I'm upper beginner level, I've had others that have told me I'm upper intermediate/advanced. I never seem to know what my level is and I feel like my doubt is consuming sometimes. And sometimes it's like I don't even know what to study because I feel like I know nothing and have no idea where or when to review things.
    I love watching your videos, it always makes me feel validated, like someone can understand my struggles. Even if I'm not advanced yet, I hope to eventually reach native fluency someday 💜

    • @NataliaGarza
      @NataliaGarza  Před 3 měsíci +1

      I know exactly what you mean. I think it's just that we have gaps in our learning so when a teacher that doesn't know us well happens upon one, they assume we are one level but then when they move on to other material they realize we aren't that level but just needed to work on certain topics/grammar points. It's something I struggle with every time I start studying with a new teacher. They need a few weeks to accurately assess my level~

    Regarding expectations of reaching native level, hard truth, but personally i would scratch it.. I moved to Germany when I was 20 with the goal to not only become native level but also assimilate so much that no one will realize im not from here. From appearance, that's possible for me here but I quickly noticed that unless you moved to the country when you were max 15 years old, there is a really low change of reaching native. I've passed C2 level and decided to focus on life long improvement. Not a tangible goal, but I take notes daily at work on more professionally expressions, read work related books etc and notice progress in real life.

I especially realted to feeling pretty good in certain situations, only to be totally thrown off five seconds later. It's weirdly nice to know that continues into advanced learning, because at least I know I'm not totally failing 😂😂

I have a online korean teacher, i speak to him in korean and in my language, i feel confortable and he helps me, he stopped me or come back to my mistake and correct me, i repeat, it doesn't bother me and i don't have korean friends, i don't live in South Korea and i feel confortable because he speaks to me not too formally and i memorize words and understand more when he speaks to me in korean too

    I always hate it when teachers correct my careless mistakes as if they’re knowledge mistakes. So when I help people with their English I’m careful to try not to do the same thing. Obviously native speakers make careless mistakes when speaking. It makes sense foreigners will make more.
    I can see how this sort of correction becomes more frustrating the more advanced you get but it’s already frustrating when I’m a beginner. I make mistakes speaking I can already self correct but I’m just juggling too many things in my head and don’t have language pattern habits built up in my brain yet so I can spit stuff out while thinking about something else.
    I’ve been having trouble finding good Korean teachers I click with on italki. I finally found one and then discovered to my dismay that you need to book her lessons a month and a half in advance because she’s too popular 😂.

    • @NataliaGarza
      @NataliaGarza  Před 3 měsíci +1

      That's a good way to put it -- careless mistakes and knowledge mistakes. Yes, it's rather frustrating... Especially because stopping the teacher to, in an essence, say "I already know this so please stop" is rude. Or at least, I think it's rude.
      On the bright side, I think this mainly happens with teachers that are still trying to evaluate my level. The teacher I've had for 4 years or so rarely stops me for careless mistakes.
      Ah yes.... I've worked with a teacher before who was similar in popularity. It's not fun to have to book lessons in advance like that, but at the same time if they're good, they're good.

    My only knowledge for the Korean language is knowing how to read the language. I do not know how Korean grammar works, and I know a very limited amount of vocabulary in the Korean language. South Koreans are some of the most respectful people in the world.

    Reading is not the same as speaking. That's not my case, because I'm generally a poor language learner, but I can still have a great grasp of grammar and vocabulary and still have a problem with reading. Actually, knowing vocabulary and grammar can be more problematic than not knowing because you will assume what the text says, but it will be wrong. Especially in texts that aren't alphabetized. And just such Korean, which has about a million exceptions in reading vs what is written, is even worse.

    Regarding hanja - i wonder if you mean that hanja characters are not worth learning (100% agree), while 한자어 does make sense. I find it boring to learn 한자어 since it's just cramming vs learning in narural context like podcasts. But whenever I connect the dots to other words with same origin, it's like man... let's get to it.

    • @sm00re2
      @sm00re2 Před 3 měsíci

      yes, she means the letters only. hanja is just the written version of 한자어. 한자어 is COMPLETELY unavoidable, but its not necessary to learn the letters (for example 대 means big and is written as 大) its not necessary to know 大. most koreans only know basic characters like she said. if a word is 한자어 then when you search its meaning on naver it will have the corresponding characters. i do think looking up the meaning of those hanja to understand the word can be more helpful than just reading the translation (depending on the word). i dont even think learning 한자어 in the context of cramming is even important. if you look up words on naver, and then look up the corresponding hanja, youll naturally learn (대 大 refers to big and 여 女 refers to female) etc. basically, youll naturally learn 한자어 through repetition.
      im assuming you mean youre making lists like
      대 big
      소 small
      남 male
      etc
      but if you mean actual words
      태양 sun
      대학교 university
      then im not sure how effective that is (especially since alot of 한자어 have native korean words like 해 for 태양/sun)
      i personally think context learning is more effective but thats just my learning style 😅
