Gladys Knight and The Pips’ special performance on The Ed Sullivan Show was a unique setting: rather than the theater, the group performed an inspired set in front of wounded soldiers being treated at Fitzsimons General Army Hospital in Denver. Among the songs performed was this powerful rendition of “I Heard it Through the Grapevine." Their appearance, originally broadcast March 29, 1970, has become one of the all-time classics from The Ed Sullivan Show.

The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

March 29, 1970, was Easter Sunday that year. Ed Sullivan probably decided to tape that week's show ahead of time at a military hospital instead of doing a live show on the holiday.
In all my decades, this is the first I have heard the chorus of "Hey Jude" presented mostly in "La, La"s. Still, Gladys Knight and The Pips" were a classy act.
The Motown era from 1963-1973 during its golden age was the best period for soul music in my opinion. I feel bad for Generation X who missed out on that timeline. If you were born in the late 60s and later, you have no idea what you missed... *Relying* on your parents, older siblings of their influence isn't the same as being there as a teenager. You guys will never know
Generation X were told about Motown from our elders who had records by various artists in their collections.
It's OK, we have these videos to watch.
Uh this Gen X-er born in 1966 did NOT miss out on any Motown timeline from this period thank you. Started buying 45's in 1971! Motown, Philly, Chicago soul, Memphis...all ruled in my family thanks to older siblings. Next time don't make such assumptions
@@AdrianDeVore is not the same as being there though you and I both know it by the time the golden era of Motown ended in 73 these GenX kids were only 7 years old or below.
They weren't there. We lived it as teenagers.
@@bigolebot We, Generation X, were too busy spending quality time in our cribs and playpens while learning how to crawl, walk, and talk with little or no memories of the latest Motown hits.🤣
Unapologetically incredible! The amazing Gladys Knight taking everyone on a religious experience and those equally tight and incredible harmonies from the Pips. Don’t think we’ll hear this level of musicianship again in this lifetime.
Quel régal ce son, cette époque 😊
All the recordings of this iconic song are legendary but give praise and thanks to the original by Gladys Knight and the Pips.
Thanks for putting these previously separated clips into one continuous video, just like it originally aired.
Had the honor of seeing Gladys perform live twice. Did not disappoint! Enjoyed her and the Pips since I was five. I'm 55 now and still have many of their records.
Hahahaha that means you missed out. I was listening to Motown in 64, before you were even alive... Pathetic
Gladys Knight is the GODDES OF SOUL.
Thanks for the reminder The Ed Sullivan " Shoe." I Love Gladys Knight & The Pipps.
Wow__The VA hospital has live music and morphine. Sign me up!!😉
😅🤣😂😅🤣😂

A fav since a kid! Vietnam war days.
Vc tem muito conhecimento da motown.
Back in the late 60's Gladys was on a bill with the Supremes and the crowd reaction in every city was much stronger for Gladys & the Pips that Diana Ross called Berry Gordy and demanded that he take Gladys off the tour. Gordy was personally involved with Ross so he gave in and they were removed from the tour.
That is true. Also, Retha went to see them sing and sent word to Gladys she is not to sing her songs. And if anybody can sing your song better than you its Gladys. And Patti is my favorite but Gladys is Empress for a reason.
Wow
💜
I choose Motown over bubblegum every time period from the age of 11 on
I feel like the show edited this incorrectly. I feel like they did "Hey Jude" first then went into the monologue and then sang "Grapevine". But great none the less.
Wow. 52 years ago. The Vietnam War era.
i got a picture with Mls Knight....but no Pips
😳The Location?! Imo it looks like a Hospital, man, this is questionable...
The Music is highly recommend👌
Why is this waiting to "Premiere" when it's already on the channel above AND people can watch it on other CZcams stations? Makes no sense....
Guess you're one of those people who have it all. All the complaints, that is...
P
What’s the backstory here?? Are they at a military or VA hospital?!
I was curious as well. Here's what I found: "Gladys Knight and the Pips’ special performance on The Ed Sullivan Show happened on March 29, 1970. The group performed in front of wounded soldiers being treated at Fitzsimons General Army Hospital in Denver, a unique and inspiring setting that Gladys took full advantage of."
@@notinmyUSMC amazing that this is the first time I saw or heard about this.
Then again I was with Marine air group 12 in Chu Lai RVN in 69-70.
@@waynerogers6621 Semper Fi, brother!
Repeat
This is ridiculous. This is not worth waiting for. Come on guys. These videos are already on the Ed Sullivan Channel. The people who organize this channel have clearly lost interest.
