Courteney Cox was so perfect as Gale Weathers that when Scream came out in the theaters, I never for one second thought I was watching Monica in a horror movie.

They all have done an incredible job on these films, but Drew, at only 20 years old did an exceptionally incredible job! Her 1 scene is ICONIC and she pulled off such a dramatic role so well! So believable to this day.
That opening scene in the first film legit scared the heck out of me, I wanted to leave the movie theater!!! But I didn't...
It was her comeback roll to film! ❤️
Drew Barrymore had been acting for over 15 years by then. She has been an incredible dramatic actress since she was 6.
I loved her in ET and in scream and in everything else. And I loved scream, went to see it in cimena when I was in elementary school with my friend and we were terrified👻 🙈
No one else, no one, could've played that part 🖤 my favorite twelve minutes on film.
The way David laughs at himself like he's a little kid telling you a secret is so adorable I just can't!

Now, look at the body language. No talking points from Drew on that subject, but can you imagine if Drew had the audacity to ask, “So, Courtney… why did you and Dave divorce?”

I think Drew forever gave horror the biggest shock scene of all time. Who would have thought the biggest star in the film would be wiped out in the first setting?? Totsl masterpiece!
Alfred Hitchcock did it with Psycho with Janet Leigh (Jamie Lee Curtis’ mom). Even if Scream didn’t do it first, it was absolutely genius of Drew to convince Wes and the producers to allow her character to be killed off.
@@ereagan4 yes also a masterpiece. One of my favorite films ever. But we’re talking about killing in the first SCENE. The biggest star at that time on the entire cast, even on the poster board. I’m sure a lot of fans were expecting her to be throughout the movie.
It became Scream's trademark to cast big stars for their opening kill scene.

There's a lot of history in this clip. Courtney and David were married and they have a daughter Coco. Also, seeing those audience members wearing the Ghost face masks reminds me of Scream 2 where Jada Pinket Smith's character gets...well...you know!!! 🔪🩸

Everytime I watch Scream 3 I remember being in the theater and the first time they show Courtney on screen as Gale with the bangs, some girls a few rows back were all like "ewww/ughhhh". I still hear it in my head everytime i see that first shot of her.

I will NEVER forget, as long as I live, how I was relaxed with Drew’s scene. It was nerve racking, because she’s so good, but I kept repeating, “But they can’t kill Drew. Who would have Drew and then kill her right away? No one would do that.”
And, BOOM. The movie sucked you in. From that point forward, everything changed, and I never again relaxed with any character…..in ANYthing. All bets were off…..forever. Honestly, it was like “Who shot JR?”…..but on steroids. Nothing like that had ever been done before…killing a huge actress right off the bat, when you think they’re the star of the movie you’ve just begun watching. Remember, IMDb didn’t exist. You couldn’t look up the movie and see who had top billing and get any clues. So you see Drew, and you think, “Oh, Drew is in this. Wicked cool.” I’m telling you….GAME CHANGER.
Iconic and Legendary
I think Drew was supposed to play the main character, but she was the one who suggested to Wes Craven that it was better for her to play the girl who died in the beginning, exactly for that reason.
I agree with everything you said as far as it being a surprise and iconic but actually it was done prior in the movie Psycho. Janet Leigh was the star of the movie and it was shocking at that time for her character to be killed off as well and in such a violent way.
@@jhar8975 Janet Leigh had half of Psycho dedicated to her though. Drew Barrymore was killed off far more quickly in Scream.
I didn’t know anyone in 1996 so I had to convince myself Drew wasn’t dead. Like when I finally learned her name I watched everything she did since then

Quite the memorable career accomplishments in showbiz for Courteney Cox. Starring as Gale Weathers in venerable "Scream" horror movies franchise, playing Monica Geller in the iconic "Friends" TV sitcom, then along with being recognized in her prime as one of the most beautiful women in world.
Her show Cougar Town was a hit.

The way Neve said she’s glad she signed on to “this one” makes me think she’s been approached in the past about roles relating to scream and she just didn’t feel right about it.
Drew being part of the most iconic Scream movie was the best opening of this movie series.

I loved Monica and Friends Courtney Cox's character and Courtney's character in that movie was my favorite of her I also still hear her voice and that comedy of friends and it's nice to see her being interviewed I guess she's not really out much in the interviewing thing but it's nice to see her for a change and what she's been up to.

I was in high school when these movies came out. I am now a mother of four and have a daughter named Sydney (spelled different than the character) but still same powerful strong name that Neve brought to life.
