@@despisethespecies same. Not only am I still a big 90s techno and industrial fan but the exposure of heavier metal like FF and Napalm Death ended up giving me the passion for a career in extreme metal. I can trace it all back to the MK soundtrack and it's probably a pretty rare pathway for most "extreme metal" people. Formed my musical taste as well, to an interesting degree

Growing up in the country in the 1990s without internet and two TV channels was tough for discovering new music. At the time I was learning guitar and my parents would buy me issues of Guitar World, Guitar One and Metal Hammer and I would be in absolute awe reading interviews with guitar players from Metal bands and Punk bands. They were so brash, confident and badass but I never heard their music and could only imagine how killer it actually was. Up to that point the heaviest music I had ever heard was stuff like White Zombie, Ministry, Rammstein, Metallica, Soundgarden, Megadeth etc. It was stuff I remembered from Beavis and Butthead as a young kid in the early 90s when we had the channel in the city. But in the mid to late 90s we were country and that was all gone. The only tidbits I would get was from people at school or maybe a movie like Ace Ventura Pet Detective or Air Heads would give me a taste.
One day my mom gave me an ad for Columbia House records. The deal was 12 cds for a penny each. I literally had hundreds of options and was overwhelmed. I blind picked stuff like Silverchair, Rage Against the Machine, The Offspring, Metallica, NOFX, Korn, Limp Bizkit and then two albums that completely blew my 13 year old mine into another dimension. That was Slayers - Diabolous in Musica and Fear Factory - Obsolete. These two albums, at the age of 13 the summer before highschool was like an absolute nuclear bomb going off and the type of cool shit I wanted and needed as a nervous teen just before the big leap into HS. I bought ab Obsolete Tshirt and I turned all my friends onto Fear Factory. Slayer was hit and miss with people but Fear Factory was just absolutely amazing. Futuristic, terminator-like end of the world concept type shit with industrial-machine like efficiency between the drums guitar and bass unlike anything I had ever heard. Burton C Bells absolutely original and unique vocals. Particularly, his soaring yet odd sounding cleans. Almost new waveish sounding, or even robotic sounding. They just made my imagination run wild in a dystopian nightmare trying to survive. I had a fender strat but wanted a 7string Ibanez so bad because of Dino. Never got one. But god damn this album is one of my favourites. There were albums as a young boy and budding musician that had a huge impact on me. This is one of them, in my personal top 10 forsure.

Really enjoyed reading your recollections from yesteryear. I was a traditional thrash metal nerd and anything that even smacked of “nu metal” already had two strikes against it as far as I was concerned. But a friend of mine gave me Demanufacture and… it utterly blew my mind. That album had the same super rare, revolutionary effect on me that Ride the Lightning provided. 90s and early Oughts FF were legendary. I was lucky enough to catch them live while touring in support of Digimortal and they were absolutely tight AF. Amazing show.

And it was a scandal in the studio :D. The recording engineer hated it, tried to flatten it, but then those parts really did sound rushed or too slow.

Raymond the drummer was a pioneer in what kids do today. Too bad he does not get the credit he's so severely deserves!!!

It’s because Dino always talks smack about his old members. He is like mustaine.

I remember Dino saying Raymond wasn't very good with his hands. But I guess 80% of the FF drum sound is the tight kick drums.

@nathanwalsh3028 he wrote all the music. Why shouldn't he get the credit? Listen, he wrote ALL the music, everyone's part.

The bass player from Fear Factory loves Korn too. I watched this interview with Christian recently and he said the main reason he jumps on stage while he performs was because of Korn.
