The past few weeks have been quite the journey for me. On Friday, August 12th, I received my first round of chemotherapy at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.
I knew my hair was likely going to start falling out within the next few weeks, but I wasn’t quite ready to completely let go. Instead, I decided to have a little bit of fun! Two hair cuts and shave later… here we are. ❤️
I hope you enjoy going on this journey with me, and maybe I can even inspire some of you out there who are going through the same thing. My best advice: embrace the change, appreciate your natural beauty, and remember - it will grow back (or so they tell me 😅).
I honestly thought losing my hair would be way more emotional, but I think the fact that I was able to accept it in stages really helped. It also helped to have my number one partner in life, Brian, by my side the entire way. And there in the end when we knew it was just plain old time to shave it off.
Thanks, as always, for the continued support. Some days I wake up wondering how on earth we got to this point… but I am also thankful every day that I have such an amazing community rallying behind me.
For now, I keep looking in the mirror and saying “I’M BALD!” But… I do have to say, it’s so much easier to maintain. 😂
    PEEF, Hope & Love,
    Jessica 🧸❤️🧸💚🧸💜

When I was treated for Hodgkins Disease during the winter of 1970 I too lost my hair. One spring day I was especially down - sad that cancer had taken so much from me, a 23 year old newlywed. I was blessed to have a young husband, very much like your Brian and one day , I remember how he lightened the mood when he said “Come outside with me. I will water your head and maybe that will help your hair grow.” Of course it did grow and came back thick and with the same natural curl. I wish that for you, and most of all I pray for your complete recovery and a long life like I have been blessed with despite that rough start.

I loved all the styles you tried. When I had cancer, I took a “Look good feel better” class offered by cancer society. Might check it out, if you haven’t already. It was taught by beauty school teacher. We got free cosmetics, and showed us how to tie scarves, etc. They recommended wearing big earrings to rock the bald look. It took cancer to get me to try short hair, now I won’t wear it any way but pixie. Praying you have an easy time with chemo, and full recovery! The WFPB can’t hurt! You got this!

Hi Jessica, my name is April. I’m 49. I was diagnosed with endometrial cancer in early 2022. Before chemo I got my hair cut very short like your 2nd cut and then at the end of July after approx the same amount of time after you started chemo mine started falling out. I sat here for a few days running my fingers through it before I finally buzzed it all off myself. It’s weird when I catch a glance of myself in a mirror. I’ve chosen to wear these (I call them gypsy head scarves) that I found online and when the weather cools down I’ll wear beanies. My story is long but suffice to say in late April after my exploratory abdominal surgery/omentum & lymph nodes removal the surgeon couldn’t perform the radical hysterectomy because it had spread into other places in my pelvis, my uterus had fallen onto my bowel and everything is all stuck together making it dangerous. I have a very rare blood clotting disorder so after surgery had to go daily for weeks and weeks to have my blood tested first thing in morn and then have a few hours of fibrinogen replacement at the same place I have chemo now. Then my huge abdominal incision got infected and had to do 2 rounds of Keflex. This delayed chemo for me until July. I had already knew it was in my cervix and one ovary before surgery and they did all the scans but I guess it took exploratory surgery to really see the state of things inside. Friday I get scans to see if it’s shrinking and Monday is my 4th round of paclitaxel & Carboplatin. If it’s shrinking they will be able to perform the radical hysterectomy in November. After every chemo treatment I am hardly able to walk due to neuropathy in my lower legs (I’m type 1 diabetic). I never felt the neuropathy before chemo but week 3 after is my best week and I catch up on laundry! Sorry this is so long! I want to say wow you look awesome with short hair and bald! You have such a cute face and beautiful eyes! I’ve worn short hair for years now and I love it! Take care!💓

When my wife started her chemo she asked me to shave her hair off just to get that part of the process over with. We put her hair out in the backyard for birds to use as nesting material. Honestly for me having my husband finally just shave off all of my hair was a relief. I felt like it was torture just watching it fall out. I wore hats all the time, my parents bought me a beautiful real hair wig and it was so uncomfortable. My advice is be sure that’s what you really want before you spend alot of money on one. Everyone that I know to this date didn’t like them. I actually think you had a great idea to go shorter and shorter giving you time to adjust. I went from long to none in 10 minutes. You are going to be fine, you have the best attitude going into this journey. Just take a breath, it’s ok. My prayers are with you❣️

Shaving one's hair off is actually something I recommend that most people do at least once in their lives. It is both intimidating and liberating. I'm crying as I'm watching your video. I remember when I looked at my bald head, it was the one and only time I cried. I said to myself "this breast cancer and chemo must be really really serious business!" I decided to stay grateful that I had good doctors and good insurance. I also had a good job waiting for me when I finished my treatment. My husband and I had enough income so that I could take a year off and did not have to go back to work during treatment. Not everyone is that fortunate. God bless you Jessica and Brian.

The amount of solidarity I feel for you is just bursting my heart. I wish I could reach through the screen and hug you. It's going to be okay. You are strong, gorgeous, and a fighter. It won't be easy. It's going to be the toughest thing you ever do and the amount of bravery you need is mind boggling. Take one day at a time. Feel every emotion. Laugh. Cry. Scream. Repeat. Ask for the magic mouthwash for your mouth and throat. Ask about taking Claritin for the bone pain (trust me, it helps). Try baby wash and coconut oil on your scalp because it can be sore and tender. A soft beanie will help when you sleep. Also... my eyes and eyelids bothered me so badly during chemo. I would get big styes from the clogged oil glands. Amazon sells these great eyelid wipes that helped. Mineral oil will help if they get too dry and it's hard to see. I wish I could just send all of what I learned in some crazy brain dump to you. Just take care of yourself! Things are going to start tasting awful so have some hard candy to suck on! Just keep going! You got this!

A friend of mine who shaved her head during chemo found that she really enjoyed wearing scarves on her head in the cooler months, and she had fun learning new ways to tie them as well as matching them to outfits. She actually ended up keeping her head shaved the summer after going into remission because she liked how cool it kept her!

Jessica This was me 20 yrs ago. I never wore a wig or a scarf. Had many tweens and teens tell me I "rocked" with my shaved and then bald head. I just owned it and you can too. It's a lesson in impermanence and how unimportant things like hair are. My partner was also very supportive-this is the important stuff. You are still you . At some point this will be something that happened to you along time ago. Honor yourself and your process!

HI. Been a silent follower for a couple of years now. I went through this myself back in 2016. I had breast cancer...6 rounds of chemo I'm fine now. :) My BFF and I made a party out of the day I shaved my head. We did several styles, even a mohawk before shaving it down bald. We were drinking and it was fun and what I needed. I knew it was just hair and it would grow back. I miss the days of being bald and being able to get ready in 15 mins. However, I'm glad I have my health and all my long hair back now. And I'm not so scared to cut huge amounts of length off my hair now like I used to be. Your health will be awesome again soon and you will have your hair back before you know it. You seem to have a good attitude. And THAT is the best medicine. STAY POSITIVE!! Positivity does wonders for your mind, body and soul. Sending you AWESOME POSITIVE VIBES. :)

Dear girl, my heart goes out to you. I was in your shoes 3 years ago, I did the cut, then after the second round of chemo, I took my electric razor to the leftover. You have a beautiful head shape, and fortunately, I do, too. My hair came back very curly for the first year-year and a half, and the last 10 months it has returned to my ‘regular’ hair texture. The had a wig similar to your cut and loved it, too. Every week, you are one week closer to being healed. Prayers for your peace of mind.

Last September, I was diagnosed with Leukemia and started treatment almost immediately. I’ve always had beautiful, thick, long red hair and it’s been part of my identity as long as I remember. I’ve lost my hair twice since then, with my initial treatment and then as soon as it started to come back in, I had my stem cell transplant and lost it again. Six month post transplant, it’s finally coming back. I don’t wear a wig, and have only worn a hat when I had to go out into the Michigan cold last winter. You get used to it. Yes, when I look in the mirror, I am constantly reminded that I’m in the club no one wants to be in, but it definitely beats the alternative.

Cancer : Class of 2016 My oncologist told me it would fall out over the course of 3 or so chemo's. It was falling out in clumps, in 12 days, I was literally afraid I would go to work, and have no hair by the time I left 8 hours later. I was shaved on a Friday evening by a lovely hairdresser who also had a wig shop. You are handling it like a champ. I had a beautiful wig that I wore for exactly 20 min, and never had it on again. ( I hear that's a common thing) Invested in tons of hats ( got some as gifts) . My favorite was Chemo-sabe, I got from etsy. ( I'm showing my age) . The lovely hairdresser said it best. It's a year and a half investment of time. My hair did not all together come back. 50% of it, never grew back on the crown of my head. Not going to lie, when I say I was pissed. My permanent hair is thinner. I was angry about this for a year or two, tried different treatments, then finally accepted my fate. You my darling have lovely thick hair, and you will probably never know the difference. Headcovers unlimited has the softest hats, I loved wearing them. You got this.

Your stunning blue eyes, beaming smile with enviable teeth and kind heart that you show us, totally outshines your hair regardless of its length, style or hat. Your hair is the picture frame that barely keeps the picture in its rectangle. I'm further through the video. The photos with your mother are very special. I am 16 years post chemo for breast cancer & lost mine while hospitalized for a lung infection. I remember it coming out like yours, in handfuls. Soon as I got home, I called my hairdresser & told her it was time for the shave. I got a wig so I wouldn't scare kids at work (nurse in a clinic) and frankly hated it so only wore it when necessary. I do have one bit of advice. When not wearing a wig, now that it will be getting cooler, be sure to wear a hat or some other head covering. I was shocked how cold my head got when it was bare. Good luck with your journey. Your hair will grow back.

You look good. I lost my hair to alopecia universalis 15 years ago. Sometimes wigs look so much better than my real hair. You can change them up and be blonde one day and brunette the next. I have been through 39 surgeries since may 2018. It taught me that I never knew how strong I was until strong was the only thing I had left to be. But I also learned that part of being strong was allowing myself to laugh, cry and even throw a fit from time to time... That takes strength as well. I lost my leg in November and now I am back to figuring out how to find my new normal.
