I had one of these. As a kid, my family didn't have much but my mom always found ways to put a huge smile on my face with Transformers, GI Joe gifts. She was so amazing. So big shout out to all the moms who sacrificed just to bring happiness to their kids.
R.I.P. to my Mom she always did for me and I was an only child and toys where always the only thing that kept me entertained and uplifted over times of loneliness
My Gran told me every single Christmas how she queued up at 4am to get me Optimus Prime in the early/mid 80s lol
My mom did the same, got me this toy for Christmas. It was huge, but very versatile. I remember getting my fingets pinched transforming it. Ahhh, good times, simpler times.
I had received Jetfire as a gift that Christmas when I was young. A year later, I gave him up along with several other Transformers and G.I. Joes to my 2 cousins because my uncle had fell on hard times and needed toys for them just before Christmas. I have never regretted that decision. I am now, finally, the proud owner of another Jetfire! Good memories.
As a side note: I remember getting my knuckles smacked by those spring loaded metal landing gears
Love seeing Optimus next to the Jetfire figure at 10:33 since both designs were conceived by one, if not the most prodigious mechanical designer in Japanese sci-fi: Shouji Kawamori.
I always feel lucky to have one of the Jetfire toys with the Macross logo on his wing. Just feels right.
I received Jetfire on Christmas in 86, now my kids play with the same Jetfire, as well as my Devesator. Toys were made to last.
Devastator was definitely not made to last. The upper torso was so fragile. My kids stay away from that.
Funny, I wanted this sooo bad, and got Jetfire for my birthday in 85. Got him out of the box, and snapped his shoulder joint the *first* time I tried to transform him! :( I wanted to exchange him for a new one at the store, but my step Dad said it must be junk since it broke so quick, and refused to exchange it for another....
@@JONNYSORENSEN_AU Didn't help that I was ten, and may not have been as careful as I should have! Lol
At least I reacquired him as an adult. He's now proudly displayed with my other favorite toys.
My devastator fell apart almost immediately.
My mother and I went to my city fair in 1985 or 86 I can't remember and she won me a Transformers Jetfire glass picture that I still have till this day. Definitely cool review thank you.
I have one of thoses! Mine is like
5 inches by 5 square.
Without the red armor it's an F14 Tomcat ! another reason I loved it so much
Not quite. The whole back section is different, but it was definitely based on the F14
Aka to kids growing up in the 80's who loved cartoons and action figures as a "Sky striker". Haha
@@craven1927 The mechincal designer of the Vf 1s based the fighter jet mode off of the F14 super Tomcat and the F15 eagle I think.
My dad did not buy me a lot of toys. But when he did, he went epic. Castle Grayskull and TF G1 Jetfire are examples of that. I loved that toy so much, I took him everywhere. One of the best G1 Transformers toys ever made. Back then, I did not know what that small rectangular piece was. I was just a wee lad. It wasn't until later that it was the gun clip. Glad I never threw that away! lol. Nice video. Very enjoyable! :)
I remember I got this fella for my 11th birthday instead of the GI joe hovercraft which was sold out.
Damn, toys were so cool back then. I try telling my kids this. So much detail and artistry.
I still remember seeing this episode for the first time as a six year old in 1985. The episode was called "Fire in the sky" and was instantly my favorite episode of all time. Never once saw the actually Skyfire toy in a store though and I was in toy stores at least once a week back then. I had only heard that the actual toy existed from my older cousin who said he'd seen one somewhere or that he knew someone who had one.
The Jetfire video was the only episode I can remember from my childhood. Something special about Starscream actually having a friend lol
"Everybody needs a friend." - Bob Ross
I had one as a kid now as an adult I've started collecting the vintage transformers again and am proud to say I have him in my collection along with a vintage 84 prime autographed by Peter Cullin
This was the autobot I mentioned in the other tour video. Great job! I knew there was some sort of correlation between Jetfire/Skyfire and the VF-1S. Man I wish I still had that guy. One of the toys a friend gave me (but it was lacking the power armor), remembered how well those spring-loaded landing gears were. That toy was way ahead of it's time.
Oh man I really love this! I bought this many many years ago when macross was popular and was always wondering why it had an autobot insignia. Little did I know it had this much history.
My favorite Transformer toy :)
Because he was also a Robotech toy and just all around cool as hell.
I got my Jetfire when they first came out, it actually also has the U.N. Spacey symbol on one wing.
:D
I agree. It was like secretly knowing you had both. This became canon in playtime later in my youth when macross and battletech became bigger in the USA.
You've got a version that is a bit more rare. It is made by a company called Matsushiro and was one of the first released.
I think I had the earliest of these maybe, I remember it had the skull and crossbones, everything, it was exactly the Macross version, I think it was Roy's plane on Robotech. Haven't looked it up, but it was my favorite toy when I was a kid, heh. I don't recall it being changed at all from the VF version. But then again we got alot of weird stuff in terms of Japanese toys where I lived, especially at the flea market. There was a kind of "black market" of copyright infringement stuff and untranslated videos and stuff, so I don't know if it was that, but I could swear I DID get it as a "transformer"
@@MichaelMercy sky fire 🔥 was the coolest transformer!!! 😎 hands down.
I played with my toys so they didn't all stay in the greatest shape, but I had some really cool stuff, including the Gen 1 Jetfire. Then when I went to college, my mom took all my old toys, including my almost flawless Voltron and gave them to my younger cousin. I'm pretty sure my Aunt promptly had a garage sale and cashed in big time. Anyway, I'm grateful that there are people like you out there keeping those memories alive, thank you.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it. Ah those dreaded garage sales! Who wants an Omega Supreme for $5? :D
I found a near complete Garbage Pail Kids card set in a box for like 5 bucks at a garage sale once! :)
@@MichaelMercy I picked up Blaster and Soundwave a garage sale in 1988 when I was 10 talk about about a great find, obviously my mom paid
I still have mine from a kid, I don't have any of the accessories but he still has a place on my shelf.
Guess he's a triple changer with its macross here all mode.
I'm a confident male and i can honestly say "I love you man!!"
I second that.
My original Jetfire I found in a comic shop a few miles away from the local TRU which didn't have him. He definitely saw years of play from myself and cousins. I think I still have him somewhere. I ended up picking up a mint in box one several years ago at a collectibles consignment store and another loose one at a convention or maybe eBay. He's always been my favorite Transformer and although I prefer the toy a little more over the cartoon/comic Skyfire version because I'm a huge Macross/Robotech fan, I still have picked up most of the various versions released for the Transformers lines including FansToys' version.
OMG I remembered getting this because for some reason my mom got confused with Optimus Prime and Jetfire.
But I loved this toy since I was at that time also a fan of Macross and I never got an actual Macross toy.
Kinda regret not taking care of it. My closest to getting this back was getting the Takara Tomy Thrilling 30th Jetfire
Thanks for doing this review! Good times!
I found a Jetfire in almost perfect condition in 1999 in the user toy section in a used furniture store. Traded it for two cheaper transformers since all the guy wanted was something to replace it in the Toy section. I was so excited!
I got a 1/48 scale Macross Valkyrie from Yamato in Japan, and growing up with Transformers like Jetfire, the Yamato figure is absolutely astounding. There are little details the Yamato figure has that the Takatoku/Hasbro figure never dreamed of...but Jetfire was a cool toy, several of my friends had him, and pasted Robotech stickers over the Autobot logo.
I got my jetfire off ebay , it came with most armor pieces, only missing the legs and gun clips, for about 30$
it came from a heavy smoker's house and was so yellow it was kinda ridiculous, but I repainted it using car paint and now you wouldn't know it wasn't original
The only problem with it is one of the shoulder transformation joint is broken, so I only display it in robot mode and never transform him for fear of finishing him off, but for 30$ and a bit of elbow grease, I got me a really nice display piece!
This is an unrecognized historical achievement. Some may say that sounds ridiculous but come on look at it, it looks like it could’ve been made in the 2000’s, that’s a technical feat!
I remember getting my Jetfire brand new in the box in 1986 for my birthday my parents bought it I saved it so they thought I was old enough to play with it I wish I still had it now or wish they forgot about it and it was still in the box
Haha, nah don't wish that. Never deprive a kid of a fun toy so that an adult can have a valuable collectible. :D
This actually happened to a buddy of mine about 3 years ago. His dad, while sorting out the garage, unearthed an unopened original Skeletor figure that apparently was supposed to be a Christmas present.
Jet fire...I had one of this too...i always playing this guy before sleep...what a memories...
Got him in 85. For Christmas. He was the best Transformer ever made. I mean nothing else like him. As far as a toy goes. He was the best! Great video!
Thanks James!
I had an OG Skull Squadron Valkyrie toy when I was a kid, and then later I became a big Robotech fan and traded with friends and yardsaled to pick up two more Transformers versions (missing most of the accessories). This really was one of the all time great transforming robot designs.
My Grandma purchased this for me from Kay-Bee toys in the mall, for Christmas in 1985. I already owned Soundwave, Thunder-Cracker, and Blitzkrieg...but this one was my instant favorite.
I was the envy of my local friends at the back yard battles, especially when I showed up in robot mode.
God bless your Grandma.
classic toy!
im gonna get this for my birthday (yayyyyyyyaatayyayayayya)
7:46 Watch your thumb knuckle. Seriously, how many times that happened to me.
"Vintage 80s power" indeed. Back in the day when they had spring loaded shooting devices that would launch a "projectile" clear across the room.
AWESOME jetfire I never had him as a toy when he was new now he's commanding lots of money it's a must have for a transformers g1 collection
The red and white from the show is cool, but I love that Jolly Roger 🏴☠️ look.mostly because it’s from a real life jet.awesome Bot either way.
I remember getting this for Christmas. Sitting at the top of the stairs just marveling at him. Sadly like all my toys he vanished during one of my mom's many moves. But on the bright side several years ago I found a complete Jetfire on BBTS gun clip included. No box but I don't care about the box.
I currently have one of these and they are so well made it is missing an arm that wasn’t my doing but it’s been 2 generations. This video is amazingly made
Thanks!
My dad gave me this for 9th birthday. But, I was a fan of Robotech at the same time. So, he played double duty as a Transformers and Robotech toy.
I remember getting this guy back in 85 for Christmas... wow! :)
I had Jetfire back in the day. One of my favourite Transformers.
Wow this brings back memories, forgot I had this one as a kid until seeing it here
Man, I loved this toy so much. I didn't get a lot of the Transformers. At the time, we didn't have a lot of money for stuff like this and what money we did get to spend on toys, I usually spent on Joes. But this guy was one of the few "big" toys I was able to talk myself into getting. And since I never had the G1 Prime, he ended up taking the leader role in my Transformers play time. I did have Megatron so they fought often! It was glorious.
I wonder if I still have this thing lurking somewhere among my storage fodder?
I got the exact toy for Christmas 86. I never forgot, I wanted the Aerialbots. I will never forget that box. I was upset Christmas day, but I was old enough to not be a brat about it. I remember showing my mom the aerialbots in the the toy section, this box was right next to it. They were the same price. 20 something dollars. I just knew I was going to have all 5 Aerialbots. I kinda didn't like him because of he didn't look like other transformers, more like robotech. I did like the sweep wings. I kept it for years though. Like I said I was in middle school so I immediately knew not to say anything about the wrong toy. I think that was the last year I asked for toys anyway. I just saw that box in the thumbnail and had to click and share. 😂
this was awesome. to this day i never knew how my mom found this guy. after she passed away, he was one of the first bots i sought to find and buy. i have him and the Macross figure now. if only i could find their armor without spending a million bucks!
According to recent IDW prequel series set in Marvel Transformers continuity Skyfire was a Decepticon scientist on Cybertron who was deactivated by Grimlock but Shockwave saved his brain module and recreated him on Earth as Jetfire.
Not only did I have the valkyrie, three of them each different models with different pilots, I had Battletech/Mechwarrior figures from the Macross/Robotech line as well. It’s neat to think that transformers and the Battletech/mechwarrior games used models from Macross/Robotech. It’s also funny to think I played with toys and models 10-20 years older than me, and watched those shows rather than things that were on air in my youth. I think I’m actually lucky to have had the experience
I had Jetfire and I think he was the coolest toy I've had at all of them not just transformers
Just wow on that room. What dreams are made of.!
I totally forgot Skyfire could fly in space.
That scene from Quest for Survival when Optimus is looking for "the only other Autobot who can fly in space" hits different now.
I think sometime in the late 90's (as a teen) I found this bot without the red additions and guns in my older cousins storage box (he passed away). Still have it somewhere too... didn't know anything about it until about 3 years ago after I moved to Japan, where found the newer model in an Edion store. I'm happy to see a vid on this model. Didn't know it was from '85! wow... It was in good condition too for being played with before I found it. Thank you!
The Valkarie was designed by Shoji Kawamori, The creator of macross and the designs of the Diaclone Car Robots
I said this on another of your videos, but I still have my original Jetfire sitting on my desk at home. Actually just showed him to my 7 year old daughter yesterday. She thought it was one of the coolest things she's ever seen! Thanks for your videos! Keep em coming and long live the 80s!!
i remember both Jetfire and Omega....had them both...was my xmas in '85
That's crazy they took that to repaint over I found mine in my closet the jet fire from 1985 also my GI joes
I sometimes wonder what G1 transformers had been like, if they had use this toy for Megatron instead of the gun toy.
Would definitely have made Megatron more intimidating and the unchanged toy model would have been great on TV.
I'm a BATTLETECH fan.
Skyfire is a mix of all 3 franchises, Robotech, Transformers and Battletech.
13:20
My personal favorite Autobot of all time.
Hope that basement or room is fireproof there is a lot of 80s history in that room 😍😍
The greater articulation is due to the VF-1 design not being based on an actual, real world jet. It was designed from the ground up to be able to transform into a robot.
I just picked up Jetfire at a Toy and comic show last year. Still in box complete.
I use to have Jet Fire and I loved it and still think about that toy to this day.It was a great fun toy for kids in the 80's
I wanted and got Jetfire for Christmas one year, either 84 or 85, I'd guess. We didn't have much money in those days so I don't know how mum and dad afforded it. I came across it in the cupboard the other day, still in its box. The plastic has yellowed a bit for some reason but it's all still there. I recall that the wheels always used to rap you on the fingers. Great video by the way, I always wondered about the whole Jetfire/Skyfire thing.
I got that one when i was a kid on release day of the model. I still remember it has the very best model i had and very sturdy, but the small piece were very fragile and the was a mix of fine plastique and metal. Making it ease to break. The robotech and macross variant were less fragile then Jetfire.
damn, I was so proud when I got Jetfire for either B-day or Xmas. I loved Robotech so it was a double win. I kept it in the box on the top shelf because I was scared my little brother was going to get his grubby mits on it and break it. I wish I knew what happened to him. Great video of a great toy.
What I remembered from the cartoon is that Skyfire was originally a Decepticon. Plus, I thought the Aerialbots came out before Omega Supreme and Cosmos. They weren't able to travel through space too like the Decepticon seekers? Except maybe Silverbolt (leader of Aerialbots) who had issues of flying at high altitudes from what I remembered on the cartoon.
Jetfire was one of the first Transformers that I got as a kid...my favorite of all time
I had it when it first came out. I recently sold it complete (without the box.) I made someone very happy.
Lots of metal parts. But the red leg clips were kinda weak.
Undoubtedly the most beautiful veritech fighter ever which is ironic because it's not officially Macross and sad because we'll never get a reissue
I did have this Transformer as a Christmas gift back in 1985. This was actually the biggest Transformer I ever owned. Oh man..... It's hard to believe that I use to have this particular Transformer. My first one was Sideswipe that I got from a five and dime store that I think was Woolworths.
Super awesome video of Transformers Jetfire, I had that when i was a kid, the box and action figure was so huge, the colors made it stand right out and the accessories were great on it. You're so awesome having one with the full box this these days.
I got my Jetfire from eBay. Got him graded too! AFA 80 and love how he looks!
Congrats & enjoy!
I remember I had a choice between Jetfire and Optimus Prime for x-mas 1985, and I went with Jetfire. Although I eventually got an Optimus Prime, I'm glad I made the choice for Jetfire at the time. I didn't know his intermediate mode was called a "Gurlock" mode. Hope I spelled that right. I would transform him into that mode not knowing at the time that it was a legit mode. Jetfire was and still is among my top 10 favorite G1 Transformers. His size, detail and articulation were second to none!
Very close! It's "Gerwalk" mode. :D
Michael, loving your videos. Bringing back so many memories. I would love a video on either the dinobots or davastator . Keep them coming!
There was only one moment in the G1 cartoon where Skyfire, even with his Copyright avoiding animation redesign, resembled a Robotech Valkyrie fighter in the half robot Guardian mode, and that's at 6m40s of the episode "A Plague of Insecticons". It's a "blink and you'll miss it" scene for only about a second as he unloads Brawn, Windcharger, Bumblebee and Spike. -~- As for the toy, I have this one too, although it's well loved, I have none of the accessories, and for some reason some of the white plastic has turned a tan colour over time.
I remember that moment and thinking "Robotech!"
I had Jetfire/Skyfire but he actually had a Robotech logo on him! I wish I would have kept him in the box in retrospect.
I wanted the Robotech one with the skull and bones, but my dad bought me this one as a birthday present... I loved it! such great memories.
I had this when I was a kid and it was awesome!!!!
My favorite transformer!!!
I remember mowing yards in the summer to get Jetfire from a place called Hart's. Loved playing with Jetfire when I was ten years old. My grandparents were pissed i got that toy they lived during the Great Depression. They wanted me to invest in something better. I loved those days. Loved to have Sky fire
The complements are duly earned. I was excited to get this piece myself.
The best Transformer of all time. G1 Jetfire!
I had Jetfire as a kid, and remember being confused as to why a Robotech Veritech fighter was also a Transformer. I'm not sure what happened to my original Jetfire toy, as we moved a lot when I was a kid. In 1994 I picked up a Bandai? reissue of the original Takatoku VF-1S Roy Fokker Super Valkyrie at a comic shop in Austin, TX. I still have it, stored away with all my other geek stuff, waiting for a day that I have enough room to properly display my collection. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.
I had the first issue, original one like you have there...an about 15 years ago I sold it. I kick myself now, knowing what they go for. I had it complete in the box, all the pieces, no yellowing, no sticker-curl as well. Man that was stupid of me.
I had one. It was awesome from what I remember.
Back in the days I saw one box displayed at a toystore... price was unobtainium.
I think it was a short nose cone variant, but with a vf1s head.
I had one of these as a kid. I seem to remember mine having the heat changing Autobot/Deciptcon sticker on the it.
Michael, I love this video so much I come back to it every now and then and watch it again ;) Jetfire is and will always be one of my favorite toys of all time. I only happened upon him by chance when I was a kid. My mom would take me to the local TRU store (which still stands with it's logo on the building, sadly abandoned and vacant now for a few years) and I would always hightail to directly to the Transformers section first.
On this one particular day I ran into the area and saw Jetfire! I was only 10 years old and as you know we did not have the luxury of the internet to check and see what was coming out. We just went to the store on occasion and we got surprises like this. The box WAS huge! And, it just looked amazing. I was mostly excited because this was the first time I saw an Autobot plane (well, we had powerglide...but I mean a plane that can go head to head with the seekers in size) and I knew there was no way I would be leaving that TRU without this!
As a kid I typically cut out the tech specs storing them in one ziplock with my others and the robot points in another and tossed the box. Wish I didn't do that in hindsight! But, we didn't think about collecting cardboard boxes as kids. I think I may have tossed the gun clip as well because the manual (IIRC) did not tell us where it went or what it was for. I probably just thought it was a piece of plastic stuck in there in error. And, I can bet that I am not alone.... hence why it is the most difficult piece to obtain in order to complete Jetfire.
I just got him today in a big vintage g1 lot with megatron, prime , starscream, grimlock, and bunch of dude with the jumbo collectors case for 100$
I just now noticed that I had a KO jetfire when I was a kid (early 2000s) He was gray, had a different head and missed the boosters. I loved him to bits but I lost him sadly.
did you get the g2 jetfire?
Still have mine all boxed up
Loved him was massive when I was a kid
I love the animated the series the, transferformers a classic cartoon era retro jetfire a classic toy.
Another episode that shows your skill in super good reviews and super cool animation. It really is fun to watch them over and over to drool over the few Transformers that I probably never own. Thank you!
I love Macross, I love VF1 Valkyrie or Skyfire. Thanks for video.
Jetfire and Panosh Place Voltron were my favorite toys asa child. Just picked one up a few weeks ago and have to find his armor and gun.
Had this toy in the 80s, still with me to this day though in loose form and quite yellowed. Bought another 2 sets MIB about 10+ years ago as part of my Macross Valkyrie collection.
Also had a few of the Takatoku valkyries like VF-1S, VF-1J Millia, Brown & Grey etc.
A superb classic toy indeed.
Megatron: you can’t defeat the desepticons! Optimus prime: I know if we didn’t have something that could defeat you! Jetfire/shyfire: what did I miss?
I got Jetfire sometime in '86 I think. Him, Grimlock, and Prime were my most exciting Transformers to finally get back then. Oh, and probably Swoop too, because he was the hardest one to come across, but I finally got him.
Thank you for the trip down memory lane...
Many of your videos are bringing precious memories from my childhood. The historical account you give in this and other videos is very good.
Loved my jet fire. The box was huge and the toy itself was heavy. Man i wish I had mine now
This was my very first Transformer, and is the one that got me hooked. As a kid, I didn't have any idea how important a G1 Jetfire would be, and I ended up breaking him and losing the parts. Now, at age 47, I recently bought him again, to add to my collection of over 300. I almost feel as if I've come full circle to complete my collecting. After just a few more to finish some recent release combiners (looking at YOU, Motormaster!), I can slow down or stop adding to the collection. Unfortunately, I don't think that'll happen!
I’m a robotech guy still kills me that I wasn’t able to get Carl maceks autograph ten years ago at an anime convention before he passed but this was a perfect marriage between the two franchises for me as a kid. When the reissues came out in the early 00s by Bandai I needed to get this in the collection although they weren’t skyfire I finally got one from my cousin for Christmas just 5 years ago. I was so happy to finally get one let alone an Og G1
